Jelly potato variety
Jelly is a medium-early table potato variety (Solanum tuberosum) of German selection. It was bred by the specialists of the EUROPLANT Pflanzenzucht GmbH company. In 2005, 4 years after the registration of the application for admission, it was included in the state register of plants of the Russian Federation in two regions: Central and Volgo-Vyatka. It has become widespread throughout the territory of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Especially appreciated for its undemanding soil conditions and high productivity. Suitable for cultivation both on an industrial scale and for personal consumption.
It takes 80-100 days from the appearance of full shoots to ripening, but the first digging can be done a little earlier, about the 70th day of the growing season.
The plant is tall, of an intermediate type, from semi-erect to spreading, with an average amount of green mass. The leaves are large or medium, intermediate to open, dark green in color. The edges of the lamina are noticeably wavy. The flowers are rather large, white in color, collected in compact corollas. Few berries are formed.
Jelly's root system is powerful, 10-15 large uniform tubers weighing 84-135 grams are formed on each plant, there are practically no small ones. Tubers are oval regular in shape, without irregularities. The peel is dense, yellow in color, smooth or slightly rough to the touch. The cut flesh is dark yellow in color. The eyes are small, superficial, almost invisible.
The marketable yield of the variety, according to state tests, is 156-292 c / ha, 6-153 c / ha more than potatoes Nevsky... The maximum amount was collected in the Tula region - 335 c / ha, 31 c / ha more than the established standard. Some agricultural firms claim that the potential yield can reach 550 c / ha, but there is no confirmation of such results in official sources. According to gardeners, from one hundred square meters it is possible to stably collect about 450 kg. Marketability is high - 88−97%. Keeping quality 86%, low germination tendency.
The taste of potatoes is excellent! It is classified as culinary type B (according to the EAPR classification - the European Association for Potato Research), that is, in the medium-boiling category. Tubers do not darken during heat treatment, are suitable for boiling, frying, baking, stuffing, they will perfectly complement soups and salads, as well as vegetable mixtures. The originator himself claims that Jelly is ideal for deep-frying, and indeed it is! Many catering establishments prefer this particular variety for making fries. Also tubers are great for making chips and frozen convenience foods. The only culinary nuance is because of the dense pulp; this variety is not particularly suitable for mashed potatoes. The starch content in tubers ranges from 13.4 to 17.8%.
Plants are not picky about the composition and type of soil, but they prefer loose fertile soils. Light loam and sandy loam are best suited. Jelly reacts calmly to changes in weather conditions and short-term droughts, shows the best yield on moderately moist soils. As for care, it does not require special attention to itself, but at the same time it responds perfectly to watering and feeding. Below is a short list of tips for growing.
- The originator recommends planting 42 thousand plants per hectare of area, or 420 plants per hundred square meters.
- The landing site should be sunny.
- The distance between the planting holes should be 28-30 cm, the row spacing should be 75 cm.
- During the growing season, it is necessary to carry out standard agrotechnical measures, such as hilling and loosening the soil, weeding, treatment from diseases and pests. As mentioned earlier, these potatoes respond well to watering. In regions with hot summers, you need to monitor soil moisture, while in areas with cool climates, plants can do without watering at all. It is advised to feed the plantings once or twice a season; we will talk about the rates of fertilization just below.
- The green mass is slightly susceptible to sunburn, however, if necessary, shade the area should be provided.
- When growing Jelly on an industrial scale, it is recommended to harvest the crop using combines with side grip in order to reduce damage to the tubers.
- It is very important to maintain crop rotation. The best predecessors are legumes, cabbage, cucumber, beets, onions and garlic, green manure.
The variety originator provides a short list of dosage recommendations for the fertilizer to be applied. We remind you that feeding should be carried out as needed, depending on the amount of nutrients and trace elements in the soil.
- Nitrogen fertilizers are applied in small to medium size. An excessive amount of them has a bad effect on the growth of tubers and increases the growing season.
- Top dressing with phosphorus is carried out at the rate of 100 kg / ha, magnesium - 60 kg / ha.
- Potash fertilizers are used in an amount of 250-300 kg / ha.
The cultivar is resistant to golden potato cyst nematode, cancer, viruses, scab and blackleg. According to the All-Russian Research Institute of Phytopathology, it is moderately susceptible to late blight in tops and tubers.
Many potato growers speak very well of Jelly. It is especially appreciated for its high taste, excellent yield, unpretentiousness to growing conditions, virus resistance, excellent presentation of tubers, as well as suitability for machine harvesting and long-term storage. To this list, you can add resistance to short-term drought, ease of care and versatility in cooking. There are practically no drawbacks to this potato, but, according to the observations of some gardeners, it tends to rapidly degenerate, so the seed material will have to be renewed a little more often, about once every five years. However, this small minus does not prevent the variety from gaining more and more attention of large agricultural complexes and owners of personal plots.
