Strawberry variety Evi 2 (Eva 2)

Evi 2 is a remontant variety of garden strawberries (strawberries) for universal use. It was bred in 1998 in the UK, Kent, by Edward Vinson Ltd. To obtain, Everglade and J92D12 were crossed. The original name of our heroine is Evie 2, in the Russian version it is also sometimes called Eva 2. This strawberry has received many positive reviews, in Oregon (USA) it has earned the title of a variety with the best ratio of fruit quality and size in comparison with other remontants. The variety is valued for its good yield, excellent taste of berries and their excellent presentation, good winter hardiness. Evi 2 is suitable for growing in regions with a mild climate, in hot and very cold areas it does not feel very comfortable.

The plant is medium-sized, spreading, but rather compact, slightly leafy, has a rounded shape. The education is extremely meager. Leaves are light green, medium-cropped, with sharp teeth. The flowers are white, bisexual. Strawberry flower stalks are long, strong, erect, multi-flowered, formed in abundant quantities, located above the level of the leaves.

The berries of Evie 2 are large, spectacular, of the correct rounded-conical shape, without a neck, very uniform in the total mass. The skin is bright red, shiny. Achenes yellow, small, shallowly depressed, superficial. The pulp is light pink, very dense, even hard, with a crunch on the bite, with a whitish core, there may be small voids inside the fruit. The aroma of the pulp is very bright, intense, true strawberry. The sepal is difficult to separate from the berry.

The taste is harmonious sweet and sour, very pleasant, even refreshing. Strawberries are versatile in use, excellent fresh, suitable for any kind of processing, suitable for freezing, perfectly decorate desserts and other culinary delights. The berries perfectly tolerate transportation and are very well stored (from 3 days or more in the refrigerator), the variety is solid, therefore ideal for commercial use, but also a simple gardener can please. Despite the firmness and characteristic crunch when biting, Evie 2 did not receive such controversial reviews as, for example, the same crunchy Albion, among remontants with firm pulp, our heroine favorably stands out for her excellent taste.

The average mass of berries in the season is 30-35 grams, but it may be less, depending on the intensity of agricultural technology, in the first wave of fruiting, giants with a weight of about 50 grams or more can ripen. Strawberries begin to bear fruit around mid-June and end in late autumn, with almost continuous fruiting. A variety of intensive type, therefore, its yield is highly dependent on the agrotechnical background - from 500 grams to 1 kg of berries from a bush.

Evi 2 is quite resistant to gray mold and powdery mildew, but preventive treatments should not be neglected. The variety is susceptible to late blight, so it is necessary to take all preventive measures against this disease. Another unpleasant nuance is that the fruits are prone to cracking during rainy periods. Strawberry winter hardiness is quite high in regions with a temperate mild climate, in such areas it can winter without shelter, calmly tolerates frosts up to about -20 ° C. In more northern regions, it is highly desirable to provide planting with good cover during the winter. Heat resistance and drought resistance of our heroine are extremely low, in hot regions she will not be able to show her full potential, except with very competent, almost perfect care.

There are some peculiarities in the cultivation of the variety that can become the "key" to the success of its cultivation. Firstly, given the compactness of the plants, they can be planted quite tightly - at a distance of 30 cm from each other. Secondly, it is necessary to regularly water the strawberries, ideally, a drip irrigation system should be installed.Evie 2 reacts extremely negatively to dry periods, so do not neglect watering. However, you should not overdo it either - with an excess of moisture, the berries lose their sweetness. Thirdly, plants form a very large number of flowers, which can play a cruel joke - the bushes simply cannot "feed" so much harvest, so either you get a lot of small fruits with a favorable outcome, or a very small number of large ones, and all the other berries will well, it’s quite a frank trifle. Thus, it is necessary to normalize the number of ovaries, removing unnecessary ones, within reasonable limits, of course.

The variety is of an intensive type, so a simple rule is relevant for it - the better you “feed” it and the better you take care of it, the greater the response should be expected. Evie 2 bears fruit very abundantly and almost without interruption, so it needs very good nutrition. Another important point is that you should not keep the plantation without renewal for more than three years with moderate agricultural technology, with intensive rejuvenation it may be necessary after a year of use. And one more nuance - this strawberry reproduces mainly by dividing the bush, it practically does not form a mustache, which, in principle, can be safely attributed to the pluses, but on the other hand, if you want to increase the area of your plantation, you will have to work hard.

Evie 2 is a very worthy variety that deserves attention. It may well please both a simple gardener and a farmer-entrepreneur, but it has not received such wide distribution as, for example, Albion and his "descendants". The fact is that this strawberry, of course, is good, but it is completely replaceable - currently there is a huge selection of varieties on the market, including remontant ones, tastier and more interesting. In addition, our heroine sins with too hard pulp with a characteristic crunch, which is not liked by all gardeners. In terms of industrial use, the Evie 2 is not that fruitful to hold on to. In a word, this Englishwoman is quite suitable for replenishing the collection, but she is unlikely to get into the list of favorites. Or maybe you will like it, who knows. One thing is for sure - these strawberries will not disappoint you or leave you without a crop, especially if you take good care of them.

Evi-2 came to me in the spring of 2017. I wrote out seedlings from a well-known online store, five bushes for 460 rubles. Frigo seedlings came - these are long roots with small green hearts. I planted it right out on the street in mid-April (I live in the Middle Lane), it took root well. I even tried to bloom, but I removed the flowers so that all my strength went to the formation of a bush. During the summer, she cut off all the flowers. By the fall, she gave a little mustache, I left them. The next year she showed herself in all her glory. Flowering began in early May, the berries appeared around the beginning of June. There are a lot of berries on the bush, they are beautiful, bright pink. Dense, with a pleasant taste. They look, of course, at least for an exhibition, but they are inferior in taste to "disposable" varieties. It bloomed for the second time at the end of July. The berries began to sing by mid-August. For my taste, these berries were already tastier. Fruiting until frost. The manufacturer promised up to 2 kg per bush per season, but this is greatly exaggerated. From 10 to 12 bushes of berries were enough to pick in a small bowl in two to three days. In the fall, this is also very good. I will continue to grow for now, but if I find a better variety, I will replace it.
