Strawberry variety Vityaz
Vityaz is a non-repairable variety of garden strawberries (strawberries) of medium ripening, universal use. It was received at the Kokinsky support point of the All-Russian Institute of Selection and Technology of Horticulture and Nursery. Varieties have become parent forms Festival chamomile and Surprise Olympiad. In 1997, an application was filed for registration of the bred plant in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation, and after two years of testing, in 1999, it was included in it. Strawberries are zoned in four regions of the country: Central, Middle Volga, Volgo-Vyatka, North-West. Vityaz is famous for its exceptional immunity to diseases and pests, as well as excellent adaptive abilities that allow it to be grown in almost all regions of Russia. It is extremely winter-hardy, very drought-resistant, unpretentious, and besides, it has excellent taste. The variety is very attractive for cultivation in garden plots and on farms in small volumes; it is not used in large-scale production.
The plant is medium-sized, semi-spreading, medium-leafy. Bushes have a flat-round outline. Mustache is formed in medium quantities. Leaves are slightly concave, slightly bubbly, with a blunt base, bright green color. The flowers are medium in size, the inner calyx is larger than the outer one, the inflorescences are compact. Strawberry flower stalks are short, multi-primordial, located at the level of the leaves. One plant forms about 7-9 peduncles, sometimes more.
Vityaz's berries are medium to large in size, round-slightly conical in shape, the fruits are wider than long. The zone without achenes near the calyx is very narrow, evenly colored red. The skin is bright red with a glossy sheen. Achenes are yellow, medium-sized, superficial. The pulp is red with an orange tint, slightly uneven, rather dense, with a very pleasant strawberry aroma.
The taste of the variety is excellent, but not everyone will like it. Berries have a traditional sweet and sour taste, reminiscent of strawberries. Many gardeners prefer unambiguously sweet strawberries, while our hero's taste palette is spicy diluted with bright sourness, which is why he is gradually losing his popularity among gardeners. The pulp contains: 9% sugars, 60 mg% vitamin C, 1.2% acids (this figure is slightly above average).
The berries are versatile in use, very good fresh, suitable for any processing and freezing, especially gardeners like the jam from Vityaz fruits. The crop can be safely transported over short distances, however, long-term storage and transportation over long distances it may not endure - the taste and presentation will deteriorate. Outwardly, the berries look very attractive, so it is quite possible to use the variety for commercial purposes, however, against the background of other popular varieties, it looks rather modest, so for business it is still better to choose something more promising. On the other hand, in regions with a problematic climate, our hero can become a lifesaver.
Fruiting of strawberries is rather unstable, the first berries weigh about 20-30 grams, in subsequent harvests the weight of the fruits decreases to 10 grams. The knight is quite fruitful, although its results cannot be called high - it is possible to collect about 100-140 centners of berries from a hectare of area. From one square meter, the yield of fruits is 2.5-3 kg. According to the data of the Kokino reference point for 2006-2007, the average yield per plant was 350-400 grams. Such indicators can be called average, although at the present time, when the market is full of varieties with a productivity of more than 1 kg of berries from a bush, the results of our hero are rather not just average, but low.
The variety is extremely resistant to fungal diseases, especially powdery mildew and verticillosis, as well as white and brown spots.Over the years of testing, it was noted that plants are weakly affected by the strawberry mite. In general, this strawberry really deserves its name, it looks invulnerable against the background of other varieties. It can be grown without preventive treatments, which means it is suitable for organic farming.
Vityaz has exceptional winter hardiness and drought resistance, it is very "tenacious" and absolutely calmly reacts to various weather disasters. Despite the small list of regions of admission, it can be grown practically throughout the territory of Russia, it will feel equally good both in the southern regions and in the northern ones. Of course, bad weather conditions of the season will negatively affect the quality and quantity of the crop, but this nuance is rather agrotechnical.
In leaving, our hero is absolutely simple, he can definitely be attributed to the category of "strawberries for the lazy." It can even grow independently, without any attention to itself, but in this case, one should not expect good harvests. The agricultural technology of the variety is standard, it includes only the most basic methods of care. The only point - do not forget about regular watering and feeding as needed, since these two points have a strong impact on the yield. Also, update your landings in time to avoid disappointment.
Let's summarize a little. Vityaz is a reliable, time-tested and experience-tested variety that can provide you with a stable harvest even in the most unfortunate seasons. Sure, it's not as high-yielding as popular favorites in the strawberry market, not as tasty, but it does have a lot of other good qualities. It is especially attractive for those who do not have much free time - this strawberry from the symbolic group “planted and forgot”, which does not require much attention. Also, our hero will be an excellent choice for gardeners from regions with a problematic harsh climate, because where foreign popular varieties simply do not take root, Vityaz feels quite comfortable.
We bought a dacha the year before last, and throughout the winter before planting, I looked through the encyclopedia of strawberry varieties and still could not choose the one that would take pride of place in the garden. A summer resident with 20 years of experience in truck farming came to visit, and her opinion turned out to be decisive in such a global problem. And so the choice fell on the Vityaz strawberry. The variety is characterized by high frost resistance and resistance to pests. He inherited these properties from his “parents” “Festival Chamomile” and “Surprise Olympiad”. In the nursery, I bought 50 bushes, planted them on the garden bed, taking into account all the recommendations. Accepted 46 pieces. The berries went on after about 3 weeks. Red, fragrant, with a slight sourness. The yield is excellent. From the harvest, I closed about 15 liters of jam + berries, which I ate straight from the garden. The jam turned out to be excellent: fragrant, whole berries, rich color. All winter we enjoyed drinking tea with strawberry jam and jam.
