Lemon variety Novogruzinsky
In Soviet times, this lemon was the most common on the plantations of the Transcaucasus, especially in Georgia and Abkhazia. And this is not surprising, because his genealogy began on the lands of the Sukhum Experimental Station, which was engaged in a lot and fruitfully in the adaptation of various citrus fruits to temperate climates. The new lemon variety was bred under the guidance of the breeder N.M. Murri, this happened in the middle of the last century. Its first, original name is Novo-Afonsky.
Description of the variety
Features of the crown... Plants of Novogruzinsky can hardly be called trees. In natural conditions, in the open field, this vigorous citrus can grow up to 5 meters in height! Of course, at home, its size is much more modest. Nevertheless, even in apartments, the crown easily reaches two meters in height, which is a serious drawback - it is difficult to fit specimens on the windowsill. The best place for a tree is large offices, spacious halls, spacious corridors of public premises.
If you put the pot with our hero on the windowsill, and the lemon is developing well, after a few years it will most likely need a separate place and a voluminous tub.
Based on this information, the crown needs constant pruning and shaping. If this is not done, it will grow, taking on an unsightly, disheveled appearance.
The branches are strong, spreading, with many large thorns. The leaves are beautiful, light green, noticeably elongated (leaf width is usually 2.5 times less than its length). If the leaf is rubbed in the palm of your hand, a delicate, pleasant lemon scent arises. The leaf petiole is shortened, the top is always slightly pointed, and the leaf blade itself has a slight, graceful bend. New shoots are thin, grow quickly, and have a green bark, which adds elegance to the tree.
Flowers... Novogruzinsky is a remontant variety, capable of blooming in two, or even three waves per growing season. Flowers are medium in size, but older specimens may be large. The outer side of the petals is colored in a barely noticeable, lilac-violet hue. Like leaves, flowers have a strong, pleasant scent.
Interesting! This variety is known for flowering a little later than other varieties. Usually, the first flowers appear in the fourth year after grafting or grafting.
Fruit... Their size is characterized as "medium", with a weight of 120 to 170 grams. However, there may be individual specimens up to 250 grams, but they are not typical for this citrus. The shape is oval, slightly elongated, at the end a blunt nipple is noticeable, expanded so much that sometimes it is even difficult to notice it.
The peel is light yellow, smooth, slightly oily, about half a centimeter thick. The taste of the fruit is strong, pleasant, has a pronounced aroma and strong acidity. According to its taste, it is considered one of the best varieties of lemon. The pulp is juicy, and the fruit itself is suitable for long-term transportation.
Another advantage of Novogruzinsky is its yield. Even at home, an adult plant can produce up to fifty fruits per year, let alone open ground, where a powerful crown is dotted with fruits! In addition, they are almost seed-free, which is a great advantage in today's market.
Summing up
Thus, Novogruzinsky lemon can be considered an excellent variety for home cultivation. Perhaps he has only two shortcomings: a large crown and late fruiting. But there are many advantages, including:
- Unpretentiousness, relative undemanding to lighting.
- High decorative effect.
- Excellent yield.
- Excellent taste of the fruit.
- Widespread: Cuttings can be found in many hobbyists and nurseries.
All this makes the variety a popular, well-known indoor citrus, the cultivation of which brings not only pleasure to admirers of exotic plants, but also undoubted practical benefits.
