Raspberry variety Bryansk Divo (Bryansk Miracle)
Every year more and more new foreign varieties of raspberries enter our market, many do not always meet expectations, but some turn out to be truly berry masterpieces. Of course, Russian selection does not stand still, opposing foreign guests with domestic raspberry achievements. But often this fight is not always equal. There are many good varieties, however, many in practice open up annoying flaws. One lacks yield indicators, another lacks the size, density of fruits, and the third, and this is very often, taste and sugar. We are all waiting for our "Russian" Maravillas - a variety with a set of characteristics at an undeniable height, and farmers around the world will literally hunt for it. But whether the Bryanskoye Miracle managed to get close to the title of the Russian "ideal" remontant and whether the Miracle is really a miracle - in our article below.
History of creation
Bryansk Divo (Bryansk Miracle) was bred by Russian breeders - academician of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences with a world name I.V. Kazakov and his student, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences S.N. Evdokimenko. Work on the creation was carried out at the Kokinsky stronghold (Bryansk region), which is the generally recognized "crimson capital" of Russia. The variety was obtained as a result of free pollination of large-fruited interspecific numbered form 47−18−4, and in 2001 it was allocated to the elite under the number 8−79−2. In 2006, it received the name and has already multiplied as a new variety. Russian patent No. 3940 was issued in 2008. The patent expires in 2038. This raspberry is included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation. The copyright holder is the All-Russian Institute of Selection and Technology for Horticulture and Nursery, Moscow.
Description
Bryansk Divo is a large-fruited remontant variety for universal use with fruiting mainly on annual shoots. The bush is powerful, slightly spreading, open type, formed mainly from 4-6 stems. Raspberry shoots are erect, thick, 1.5-1.8 meters high, covered with numerous rather thorny green thorns. At the beginning of growth, when the stems are young, they are predominantly green in color. Then, as they grow, they acquire the so-called anthocyanin hue (lilac-red) with a slight waxy bloom. Leaves are medium in size, oval, rich light green above, whitish below. According to the degree of corrugation, they are slightly wrinkled, slightly pubescent, the teeth along the edges of the leaves are medium-pointed. The flowers are white, medium in size, up to 1 cm in diameter, the raspberry bloom is abundant and long.
The berries of the Bryansk Diva are really very beautiful. As if chiseled, mostly one-dimensional, elongated-conical, spindle-shaped and bright red, scarlet with shine. They are large and very large, the length is mainly from 2 to 4 cm, but some specimens can reach up to 5 cm. The drupes are small, homogeneous, tightly linked to each other, practically not felt in fruits when consumed.
Dessert taste, sweet and sour, ordinary raspberry, no frills. Often it can be bland and frankly sour. The pulp is tender, with a delicate raspberry aroma. Brix tests showed that the share of sugar in fruits averages 5.6%. But according to the results of comparative tests of various varieties conducted by S.N. Evdokimenko and his team, Bryanskoe Divo in some years showed only 2.8% sugar. At the same time, the proportion of acid was 1.76% and a rather high content of vitamin C was observed - 44.6 mg%, and sometimes it reached very high 70%. The content of soluble dry matter (RSV) is 7.1%. Tasting evaluation of fresh berries by experts - 4 points out of 5 possible. Transportability and keeping quality of fruits are normal, by 4 points out of 5. Berries are suitable for fresh consumption and all types of processing.
The weight of raspberries is on average 4.3-4.5 grams, often reaching the maximum, so to speak, serial branded size of 6 grams. But sometimes there are just giants weighing up to 10 grams. But this is rather an exception, since the variety produces fairly uniform fruits with a similar size. The load of berries is very large - the fruiting zone is 2/3 of the shoot and even more. Therefore, the stem can bend significantly under the weight of the crop. Ripening starts at the top and continues down the stem. Therefore, it is recommended to pinch off some of the lowest laterals (fruit twigs) to accelerate ripening and increase the size of the berries.
The Bryansk miracle is characterized by an early (for remontants) ripening period, in the southern regions it starts from July, in the more northern regions - from the beginning of August. Fruiting for a long time, in October raspberries give almost the entire harvest, up to 90%. During the season, the berry does not become significantly smaller, does not crumble during collection, easily separates from the fruit, the separation is dry. The yield is 2.5-4 kg per bush, depending on the number of shoots and agricultural technology. The average yield of the variety is 13 t / ha, but it can reach up to 18 t / ha, depending on growing conditions and planting density.
Raspberries have rather long bare lateral shoots, so it is advisable not to narrow the row spacing in order to avoid difficulties during the care and collection of fruits. We recommend planting with a minimum distance between rows of 2 or more meters, the optimal is 2.5-3 meters. This is especially true for industrial plantings, where the use of mechanized equipment is possible. Shoot-forming ability is average, shoots (nettles) provide enough for non-mass reproduction and do not cause problems with care. The cultivation technology provides for late autumn or early spring mowing of shoots "to zero". For a second harvest on last year's shoots, this raspberry is unsuitable.
Resistance to diseases and pests in the Bryansk diva is at the level of standard varieties. Frost resistance up to -25 ° С. Drought resistance and heat resistance are average.
Unfortunately, this variety was included in one of those that we mentioned at the beginning of the article - in practice, it showed some shortcomings. And just the problems with taste give gardeners the main reason to say goodbye to these raspberries, especially if the space on the site is barely enough and you need to choose the most effective and sweet varieties to provide themselves with berries. Some readers may start to be indignant: how is it - I have a wonderful miracle to taste
And the last compelling argument regarding the fact that there are problems with sugar in fruits and quite large - the percentage of sugar in berries. It is 5.6%, and it has sometimes dropped to 2.8%. And, for example, everyone's recognized delicious Shelves this indicator Brix averages 11.7%, and the standard of summer raspberry Tulamin - 10.3%. Remember, if a variety has a tasty berry, it will be tasty with very rare exceptions. And the arguments in favor of the fact that this is influenced by improper care, the wrong conditions, the wrong location of the site - most likely just the excuses of sellers positioning their products as "super-elite".
Now I would like to summarize all of the above, listing all the advantages and disadvantages of the Bryansk Diva.
Advantages
- Early ripening, long-term fruiting, 90% yield before frost, which is important when choosing raspberries for planting by residents of the northern regions.
- Good and stable yield.
- The most beautiful spectacular berries of a memorable uniform shape (excellent presentation). And also their size itself is large and very large.
- Frost resistance up to -25 ° С, but it is rather relative. After all, there is no ground part, to obtain a second harvest, like a tutimer variety, the Bryansk miracle is not suitable, and therefore, there is nothing to freeze out - all the shoots are cut out at the end of the season, only the most important thing for raspberries remains - the root system. Well, the root, protected by soil and covered with a layer of mulch for the winter, especially if the winter is snowy, is completely safe until spring.
- Open habit of the bush, most of the fruits are not covered with leaves.
disadvantages
- Bryansk Divo is very sensitive to irrigation interruptions or simply insufficient watering. Heat and dry air, rains also have a bad effect on plants. The fruits become smaller and the taste deteriorates sharply.
- Under unfavorable weather conditions (high humidity and cool weather), the variety is one of the first among others to get spotted. By the fall, it often happens that the bushes are completely stained. There is nothing especially terrible in this (unless, of course, you are selling seedlings), at the end of the season the shoots are still mowed down to zero. But it must be remembered that any disease takes away the strength from the plant and this, accordingly, affects the yield. You also need to collect and dispose of fallen diseased leaves so that they do not rot in the soil, contaminating the soil. Therefore, it is advisable to pay special attention to the treatment of raspberries with systemic fungicides for fungal diseases.
- Berries of medium density, long-distance transportation without refrigeration can be risky for the product. But for local markets, this variety is the very thing - buyers are delighted with just one kind of fruit.
- Very thorny shoots, making it difficult to care for plants and pick berries. As some "reputable" gardeners characterize this raspberry, it is a rather prickly variety with an average taste.
- And the main subject of controversy and an annoying vulnerability of the Bryansk Diva is its taste. There is no depth, fullness, saturation in it. Sweetness is often not enough. In general, really average taste with no claims to stardom. Before tasting, from raspberries with such beautiful fruits, of course, you expect something completely different. In short, if you choose a variety for yourself, to enjoy the berries, given a small area of \ u200b \ u200bthe plot, you will be disappointed. But if the main task is to sell the crop, then the Bryansk Miracle is quite suitable for you. And also, if there is free space, as a variety for replenishing the raspberry collection, of course, it has a place to be!

The Bryansk marvel is our fourth year. The relatives from whom we took the seedlings advised us to cut the raspberries completely in the fall in order to obtain a bountiful harvest. But we are experimenting. We completely cut off half of the bushes in the fall and the next year we get one harvest from them, in the autumn, although some shoots begin to bear fruit already from the end of July. But the abundant ripening of berries occurs in September - October. In the second half of the bushes in the fall, we cut out only last year's shoots, leaving the growth of the current year. We bend and cover the shoots for the winter. From these bushes, we get two harvests: summer, quite plentiful, and autumn.
In our opinion, the summer harvest of this variety is sweeter than the autumn one. Autumn berries are still freshish. They are good only because they remain on the bushes even after slight frosts.
