Raspberry variety Pohvalinka
And again a loud and widely expected novelty from the Shkolny Sad kennel. As always, excellent taste, high transportability, disease resistance and huge fruit size are announced. And the constantly fueled interest in social networks and forums makes Praise something incredible. From the category - plant and grow your happiness!
The mood spoiled the people a little by the fact that in some regions, despite the still lying snow, raspberries are already being sent. And those of the gardeners who did not manage to order for the spring, in a hurry, book seedlings for the fall. Moreover, summer residents order them all over the country, be it Moscow, St. Petersburg or Siberia. And in the spring planting excitement, they do not take into account that this is a late remontant and is not suitable for all regions! But is this the only minus of Praise and what clear advantages it has over other varieties - more on this in our article below.
History of creation
This remontant raspberry was created by the Russian farmer and breeder Vladimir Shiblev. The co-author was his son and the commercial director of the family nursery Ilya Shiblev. The nursery "School Garden" itself was founded in 1989, and is located in the village of Smirnovo, Nizhny Novgorod region.
In the spring of 2019, two more widely advertised new items were presented for implementation - Samokhval and Raspberry Ridge... And in the spring of 2020, the nursery announced the entry into the market of the earliest and smallest remontant - the Little Humpbacked Horse. Our heroine is registered in the State Register of Protected Breeding Achievements. Copyright certificate No. 66 894, issued on 08.2018, patent number 9807, valid until 12.2048.
Description
Pohvalinka is a remontant variety with dessert-flavored berries and universal use. The cultivation technology requires late autumn or early spring mowing of shoots "to zero". It is a remontant with a medium late maturity. Spices after the varieties The Little Humpbacked Horse, Raspberry Ridge, Nizhegorodets and Samokhval. This raspberry is the latest remodeler from the breeders of the School Garden.
In this regard, our heroine is not suitable for growing in regions with an early onset of autumn cold weather. For example, in the Moscow, and even more so in the Leningrad region, cultivation is desirable in protected ground conditions. And ideally, not just in greenhouses, but in heated greenhouses. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the harvest begins to ripen in the first decade of September, the peak of fruiting occurs at the end of the month. In the southern regions, raspberries begin to bear fruit from mid-August. The variety is not suitable for growing for two harvests, like a totimer.
The plant is characterized by high vigor of growth, produces a very large number of shoots per season. Stems are medium-sized, powerful, strong, but with a strongly drooping top. They grow mainly up to 130-150 cm, with proper agricultural technology they can grow up to 180 cm. The stems are covered with a wax bloom of medium intensity, there is no pubescence on them. Young shoots of Pokhvalinka are juicy green, by autumn they acquire a brownish color, sometimes they can have an anthocyanin hue. In the lower part, the shoots are densely covered with thorns, the rest of the stems are medium-spiked. The spines themselves are long, of medium hardness, not aggressive, with a green base. Lateral branches are slightly pubescent and moderately studded, spines on them are small and soft. Laterals are short and medium, strong, elastic, green in color, can acquire an anthocyanin hue by autumn.
The leaves are rounded with a sharp nose. They are medium to large in size, corrugated, strongly twisted, with slight pubescence. The denticles along the edges are frequent, small, and moderately sharp. The leaves are deep green above, whitish below. Abundant flowering, friendly. The flowers are white, without a pronounced aroma, medium and large in size, on average 1.5-2.0 cm in diameter. The variety is characterized by a developed, powerful, fibrous root system. This raspberry aggressively "captures" the adjacent territory 1.5-2.0 meters in diameter. This must be taken into account when choosing a planting scheme and distance to other plants. When planting, even after 1.5 meters in the second year of cultivation, shoots germinate along the entire length of the row. This will happen on condition of loose soil and ensuring regular, abundant watering. If it is not possible to maintain the required distance, then the growth of the raspberry root system should be limited. Sheets of iron or slate are dug into the ground, at least 50 cm deep. This, of course, is not a panacea, but Praise will help to curb the rapid growth of roots.
The berries are very effective in appearance, beautiful, aligned, elongated-conical, spindle-shaped, with slight pubescence. They are a deep pinkish-crimson color, with a slight sheen. Drupes are medium and small, homogeneous, tightly linked to each other. The fruits are dense, strong, but the pulp is juicy, with few seeds. The variety is distinguished by its massive, very amicable ripening of fruits. On one stem, up to 20-30 berries can ripen at the same time.
The fruits are fleshy, large and very large. Sometimes they are just huge, especially in the first samples. At the beginning of the collection, the largest specimens may come across, weighing 18-20 grams. But the weight of fruits during all other samples averages from 6.4 grams to 10.5 grams. The length of the berries in the season is mainly 3.0-4.0 cm, the width is 2.0-3.0 cm. Often, raspberries grow to their maximum size - 5 cm. In the season they do not significantly shrink, retain their weight and size.
Berries of dessert taste, sweet, with a slight sourness and rich raspberry aroma. Taste qualities are really good, experts' tasting score was 4.2 points out of 5.0 possible. The sugar content in fruits is 7%, titratable acidity is 1.3%, vitamin C is 58.0 mg%. Fruit of Praise for universal use. Suitable for fresh consumption. It is especially tasty and interesting to eat the fruits "straight from the bush." Children just love this variety, so you need to carefully monitor the safety of the crop! Berries are suitable for all types of processing (juices, preserves, fruit drinks, compotes, jams), as well as for drying and freezing. The fruits have high commercial characteristics, which makes them suitable for sale in retail and wholesale markets for fresh produce.
Raspberry has high characteristics of keeping quality and transportability. Suitable for long distance transportation. It has been tested to withstand transportation for 600-700 km without loss of commercial qualities. An important condition for long-term storage: compliance with the required humidity regime, collection in a shallow container (preferably plastic booties of 1 and 0.5 kg or small cardboard boxes), as well as, if possible, cooling and maintaining a constant temperature of + 2 ° C.
The yield of the variety is also at a fairly high level, it is 18-20 t / ha. It may be higher, depending on agricultural technology and planting scheme. Productivity from 1 bush is 4-5 kg. On an industrial scale, if mechanized equipment is used to care for plants and collect raspberries, the row spacing should be 3.0 -3.5 meters, it all depends on its dimensions. If harvesting and agricultural technology does not provide for the use of large-sized equipment, as well as for amateur cultivation, the row spacing can be reduced to 2.5-2.0 meters. The distance between seedlings in a row depends on the goals that the farmer or gardener wants to achieve in the year of planting. If the task is to obtain the maximum harvest already in the year of planting, as well as if there is sufficient planting material, then the plants are planted every 0.5 meters. The stems under the weight of the crop can tilt to the sides, so it is advisable to use supports or trellises.
Pohvalinka has good drought tolerance characteristics. But for the berry to set its "corporate" size and maintain high yields, regular, abundant watering is simply necessary. Especially when the fruit is being poured. When using drip irrigation, it is advisable to lay the tape in two lines, on both sides of the bush. The plant has a powerful root system, therefore, watering raspberries only under a bush cannot achieve good results, especially in the southern regions. If mulch is laid, tape is placed on top of it. Dry mulch simply won't rot.
The variety has high frost resistance. If there is a permanent snow cover or a thick layer of mulch, you can not worry about the safety of the root system until spring. Plants have been proven to tolerate -35-40 ° C under snow. With early spring mowing, raspberry shoots in winter play the role of "snow retainers", and this greatly helps a successful wintering.
The variety can be cultivated in both open and closed ground. Moreover, in greenhouse conditions, especially in the southern regions, Pohvalinka will be able to give almost the entire harvest. It is also advisable to grow in tunnels, which is increasingly being introduced by the Poles, who in recent years have become one of the largest producers of raspberries in Europe.
Strengths
- High and very high, stable yields.
- The variety is characterized by high vigor of growth, new shoots grow rapidly throughout the season.
- A big plus is that a gardener, buying several bushes, subject to competent agricultural techniques, can grow a lot of seedlings for the next season.
- Due to its very developed root system, the plant has good drought tolerance indicators.
- Thorns of medium density, not aggressive, do not significantly interfere with the harvest.
- Fruits of a rich, raspberry flavor, sweet, juicy, with a thick berry aroma.
- The berries are of universal use, they have good keeping quality and transportability.
- Excellent fruit size - they are elongated, large and very large. Often they are simply huge, with a 100% "wow effect".
- Praise can be grown both in open and protected ground (greenhouses of various types and tunnels).
- Good adaptation of plants to different growing conditions, including in the open field. The variety is suitable both for amateur gardening in small areas and for large industrial, farm plantations.
- Shoots are erect, quite resistant to external negative conditions. In particular, the bush does not fall apart in strong winds.
- There will be no problems with the reproduction of the novelty - raspberries are very active in producing root shoots. There is also a high percentage of nettle production during reproduction by the uterine root.
- The variety shows resistance to major diseases and pests of the crop, has a high frost resistance, especially when mulching the soil or thick snow cover.
- Fruits tolerate short-term frosts down to -5 ° С without loss of marketable qualities.
Weak sides
- It is necessary to very carefully loosen and weed under the bushes. Otherwise, if the roots are damaged, a huge amount of root growth (nettles) will grow. And it takes strength from the bush and subsequently this will affect the yield and size of the berries. The way out is to mulch the rows with organic or non-woven material (spunbond, lutrasil, agrofibre) with a density of 50. Agrotechnical fabric is perfect, however, it is quite expensive, but strong and durable. For example, in the same Poland, raspberries, blackberries in tunnels and in the open field are planted just on the agro-fabric.
- Active growth of the root system (up to 2 meters in diameter around the bush). This must be taken into account when choosing a distance from other crops and especially other varieties of raspberries. If possible, it is necessary to limit the spread of the root system.
- Praise has a late ripening period. In regions with an early onset of autumn cold weather, it will not be able to give more than half of the harvest. In such areas, it is advisable to grow only in greenhouses.
- High price for new seedlings.
- Although the shoots are erect, their tops are strongly drooping. For the convenience of collection, especially with a narrow aisle, it is desirable to tie the trellis or supports to the wire.
- As with many new products, there is little objective information about this raspberry, tested by gardeners in practice.
