Raspberry variety Senator
This new, undoubtedly, wonderful variety was bred by the famous Russian breeder V.V. Kichina based on the work of the English scientist Derek Jennings, who discovered the gene for large-fruited raspberries, thereby paving the way for the creation of varieties with very large fruits. Our hero is one of those.
Senator - raspberries of medium ripening with the beginning of fruiting in July.
The berry is beautiful, elongated-conical in shape, with small drupes, orange-red with glossy color and spectacularly surprising size - the average weight is 7-12 grams, but some specimens reach 15!
Despite the average density, the berry does not crumble during collection when it is separated from the fruit, it has good transportability and keeping quality, and can also hang on the bush for some time without losing its commercial qualities.
On numerous laterals (fruit branches), 20-40 berries grow on each, which provides a very good yield of the variety - up to 4.5 kg per bush (up to about 1 kg per shoot).
Separately, I would like to note the real sweet "raspberry" taste and aroma of the Senator fruits, which is important for such a large size.
Due to their taste, berries are widely used in cooking, are suitable for processing and freezing, and of course, fresh consumption!
Ease of care and collection is especially facilitated by the fact that there are no thorns at all on upright, strong (up to 1.8 m in height) shoots, and a support or trellis is not required. Fruit twigs are covered with large, wrinkled foliage. Plants are frost-resistant, withstand up to -35 ° C, when the temperature drops below, it is advisable to bend down and cover the shoots. But, of course, it is better to do this right away in the fall in order to avoid worries about the future harvest.
Senator is also resistant to the most common raspberry diseases. Due to the combination of such characteristics as winter hardiness, keeping and transportability, high yield, excellent taste and very large berry size, our hero becomes well suited for both farms and ordinary summer cottages.
There is a small fly in the ointment in a barrel of honey - the fruits are very often double, the so-called "chimera". And also, in comparison with the latest foreign varieties, for example, with the same Glen Dee, similar in terms of ripening, the Senator loses. Well, the point here is to plant yourself and come to your own conclusions, but this variety will definitely not be bad!

I planted this variety and is simply fascinated by it! The taste is great, fruiting lasts until the first snow. But there are also disadvantages - he likes to "eat". You cannot get a good harvest without fertilizers.
