Carrot variety NIIOH 336

Continuing to consider mid-ripening varieties of carrots, one cannot ignore the variety called NIIOH 336. It has already been tested by time and unfavorable conditions, and is also perfect for storage. Origin: obtained by crossing Vitamin 6 and Hybrid 5, followed by selection for individual characteristics. The applicant and one of the originators was the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing". Our heroine has been on variety testing since 1973, entered into the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia in 1978. Got admission to cultivation in regions with a temperate and cool climate: Central, North-West, Middle Volga, Nizhnevolzhsky, Volgo-Vyatka, West Siberian, East Siberian, Far Eastern. After studies (1983-1988) carried out by MoVIR, carrots were characterized by high adaptability in terms of yield, dry matter and carotene content, and total sugar content.

Description

The plant belongs to the transitional Berlikum-Nantes cultivar. The leaf rosette is powerful, erect or semi-erect, about 50 cm high. The leaf blade is long-petiolate, the type of leaf segments is lanceolate, the color of the tops is deep green. The root crop is cylindrical in shape, with a blunt tip. The head is medium, slightly depressed. The surface of the fruit is smooth, the eyes are shallow, light. The pulp is crispy, juicy, very sweet. The core is small, rounded in the cut, accounting for 26 - 35% of the total diameter of the root crop. The flesh and heart are well colored red-orange. The root crop has a length of about 18 cm, a diameter of 4 - 5 cm. Weight 100 - 122 grams. The pulp accumulates a large amount of sugars and carotene (19 mg (or 27%) per 100 grams of raw material, more than in other varieties), therefore NIIOH 336 has a high taste.

Characteristics

• In terms of ripening, carrots are mid-ripening. The period from sowing to harvesting, depending on the region of cultivation, takes 98 - 113 days;
• the yield is good. True, there is no exact information about her in the State Register. But other sources give data about 9 kg per square meter. If we take larger-scale indicators, then the yield per hectare is from 49 to 83 centners;
• resistance to adverse weather conditions is excellent. No wonder our heroine is recommended for cultivation in the Irkutsk, Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Chita and Yakutsk regions, where many other varieties simply could not show stability;
• carrots are resistant to the main diseases of the culture, but it is still not worth neglecting preventive treatments;
• due to high adaptability, resistance to flowering, or shooting, is noted;
• the resistance of root crops to cracking is also observed;
• with thickened crops or when grown on stony soil, root crops can be uneven, deformed;
• the crop perfectly tolerates long-term transportation;
• keeping quality is excellent, the variety is suitable for winter storage;
• the way of use is universal. NIIOH 336 is used in its natural form, juice is prepared from carrots, used for preparing main dishes, frozen, dried.

Due to the fact that during growth the root crop is completely buried in the soil, its upper part does not turn green.

Agrotechnics

Sowing is carried out in the spring, in April - May. Our heroine prefers cultivated and fertilized soils, so before sowing, carry out a deep excavation with fertilization. But remember that it is unacceptable to exceed the prescribed norm of nitrogen, otherwise it leads to the accumulation of nitrates in root crops and a sharp decrease in their keeping quality. It does not tolerate culture and fresh organic matter, after its introduction, it is possible to use the site for carrots only for the next year. But potash fertilizers are more preferable. The best predecessors in the crop rotation are cucumbers, tomatoes, legumes, early cabbage and potatoes, which also prefer soil with neutral acidity.Watering must be carried out carefully, with an excess of moisture, the vegetable stops growing, but overdrying of the soil must not be allowed. Sow pelleted seeds at a distance of 4 - 5 cm from each other. The row spacing is about 20 cm. The crop is perfect for pre-winter sowing.

NIIOH 336 is a very popular mid-season variety. Its main value lies in high productivity, excellent taste and the ability to lay crops for long-term storage. Given that the variety is intended for cool regions, its resistance to adverse conditions is of great importance, thanks to which it is possible to avoid flowering.
