Beet variety Cylinder
Among the various types of table beets, varieties with an unusual shape of the root crop stand out. One of them has a name that fully corresponds to its appearance - Cylinder. An application for registration of a vegetable and its entry into the State Register of Plants of the Russian Federation was carried out in 1998. The originator is Agrofirma Marinda LLC. All regions are available for cultivation. Recommended for garden plots, home gardens and small farms. Very popular in Moldova and Ukraine. Not a hybrid.
Description
The leaf socket is small, semi-erect. Leaves are medium in size, elongated, with a moderately pronounced wavy edge. The plate is glossy, bright green, with contrasting pink-violet veins. The petiole is not too long. Like the veins, it is intensely colored with anthocyanins.
The root crop is elongated, cylindrical, even, sometimes slightly curved, with a small pointed tip, medium-sized head, flat, protruding above the soil surface. Length from 16 cm, diameter 4 - 5 cm. Weight from 250 to 600 grams. The skin is thin, dark red, but on the protruding part of the root vegetable it may have a slight greenish tint. The pulp of the variety is dark red, without contrasting rings (although some sources indicate a slight ringing), tender in consistency and very juicy. The beets taste pleasant, sweet. Many people note a pleasant aroma. Taste The cylinders are characterized as good and excellent.
Characteristics
- In terms of ripening, the culture is mid-season. The period from germination to technical ripeness is, depending on the region, from 80 to 128 days. Therefore, the harvesting period can be from August to October;
- marketable yield is excellent - 700 - 1000 kg / ha;
- resistance to flowering is noted;
- strong immunity;
- drought resistance makes it possible to successfully cultivate this beet even in the southern regions, with poor watering;
- the variety can withstand light frosts on the soil;
- due to the unusual shape and incomplete immersion in the soil, the root crops of the Cylinders are easy to remove from the soil, convenient to store and transport;
- in addition, a small volume will allow you to economically use every piece of land in the garden;
- excellent transportability;
- shelf life - up to 7 months subject to storage conditions;
- the way of using root crops is universal. Due to their rich vitamin composition, they are consumed raw, as an ingredient in vegetable salads. When boiling, the color of the pulp does not change, so the beets are boiled and stewed. It is also suitable for conservation.
Agrotechnics
The cylinder is unpretentious, so even inexperienced gardeners can safely take on its cultivation. You just need to choose and prepare a landing site. The variety is picky about lighting, so you should not arrange beds under the trees. The need for moisture is high. But, as noted, the plant can tolerate dry periods. The culture is also responsive to feeding, it is best to use complex fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
But what the plant does not like is acidic and heavy soils. Therefore, before planting, the site is deeply dug up and, if necessary, deacidify it. Sowing seeds is carried out in April or May, deepening the planting material of the variety by 2 - 3 cm. In September or October, you can carry out pre-winter sowing, which will allow you to get an earlier harvest.
The main advantages of the Cylinder are high yield and marketability, a beautiful look of root crops and an excellent taste, which allows the vegetable to be widely used in cooking. In addition, fresh beets can be stored until spring without losing their flavor.
Adored by my family for taste, yield and keeping quality. There are not many such delicious fresh varieties (with the exception of "Incomparable A-463"). I must sow every year and in large quantities, because all winter we eat fresh salads with it (thinly chopped beets and white cabbage), make vinaigrette, fry, bake. In the cellar, even until spring, these beets do not lose their sweetness. It is surprising that the variety is not late (it grows in about 2 months), but it is stored so well anyway. Of course, an even big plus is the size of root crops, due to which more harvest is obtained in the same area (especially important when space in the garden is limited). And most importantly, there is nothing difficult in growing, there is a minimum of actions, and the harvest is contrary to Newton's third law ...
I have been growing Cylinder beets in my beds, perhaps, for more than 5 years. I plant with purchased seeds and never complain about their germination. My beds are small, so there is no special time for leaving. I like its dark color, which is not digested and the taste is sweet. We have been eating since July. Either it seems to me so, or in fact so, it cooks faster than other varieties of beets. At first I used it only for vinaigrettes and other salads, and recently began to cook borscht with it. Mine like it even more than with borsch beet. Stores well if you create normal conditions in the cellar. For example, I store them in small cardboard boxes with a lid on them. If kept open, it will wither in my shallow cellar.
I have been planting this beet for ten years, if not more. Occasionally I switched to other varieties, but only if for some reason I could not buy Cylinder seeds. On the fifteenth of May, I sow seeds in a separate area. When the seedlings grow to four or five sentiments, I plant them in a permanent place. To save space, I do not make a separate bed for the beets, but plant between the rows of onions. The garden should be well fertilized so that both beets and onions have enough nutrients. During the season, I also fertilize with mineral fertilizers. At the end of July, I remove the ripe onions from the garden, and feed the remaining beets again so that I have time to gain sufficient weight. I clean in mid-September, sometimes later, it all depends on the weather. I store it in the cellar in boxes, always with sand, otherwise it will wither!
Familiar beetroot! This is not the first year we have been growing this. It grows wonderfully on our light loams, and if you also feed them with fertilizers, then they are just monsters! Our cylinder gives a good harvest every year. Some root crops with a diameter of about 7 cm in length can reach 30 - 35 cm. But these are single specimens, and mostly about 10 - 15 cm in length.
Stored amazingly! In a cold basement, it lies quietly until May.
Tastes good too. The color of the flesh is rich, without light stripes and tough fibers. Beets are equally well suited for salads (vinaigrette, herring under a fur coat) and for borscht. This is not our only beet variety, but a permanent one.
