Tomato variety Big beef (F1)

“Tomato sandwich” sounds somewhat unusual. But believe me, with the right variety it is possible and surprisingly delicious. Not so long ago, a new designation "beef" appeared in the breeding terminology of tomatoes, which means "beef" in English. What does beef have to do with tomatoes? Apart from comparing the quality of the pulp, none. But this is the term used for all fleshy tomato varieties. One of the brightest representatives of such varieties is Big Beef. Monsanto Holland B.V. applied for its registration in 2008. In the same year, the novelty was entered into the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia with admission in the Northern, North-Western, Volga-Vyatka, Central, Middle Volga and North Caucasian regions, as well as in the Central Black Earth Region. The tomato showed the best results when grown under film shelters. The variety is recommended for personal subsidiary plots. It is a hybrid, therefore it is always labeled F1.

Description

The plant is indeterminate, about 2 meters high in a greenhouse and up to 1.5 meters outdoors. The type of development is predominantly generative, which endows the hybrid with shorter internodes than those of ordinary indents and a more pronounced ability to bear fruit. The Big Beef bush looks powerful and spreading thanks to its good foliage. Shoot-forming ability is average, shoots are strong. The leaves are light green, large, of the usual type, with slightly dissected lobes and a slightly wrinkled surface. The inflorescence is simple. In one brush, 3 - 5 ovaries are formed. The peduncle is articulated.

The fruits of the variety are beautiful, large, flat-round in shape, with slight ribbing in the area of the peduncle, rather dense and thick-walled. The skin is not thick, but firm. An unripe tomato is light green, there is no spot at the stalk. When ripe, it becomes a bright deep red with a glossy sheen. The pulp is distinguished by its fleshiness, delicate texture, juiciness and aroma. At the fault, it resembles a sugary watermelon. There are quite a lot of seed chambers - 6 or more, but they are not very large, with a small number of seeds. The taste of Big Beef is good, the State Register defines this indicator as excellent. Indeed, the taste of tomatoes is sweetish, with a slight sourness. But gourmets still note that varietal tomatoes have a richer taste compared to our hero. It is worth noting the high nutritional value of the hybrid, its pulp contains an increased amount of dry matter (due to which the pulp does not drain and keeps its shape during cutting), sugars and beta-carotene. The weight of the fetus according to the State Register is 210 grams, the originator claims 230 - 330 grams. Experienced tomato growers, by rationing the amount of ovary in the brush, get half a kilogram specimens.

Characteristics

  • In terms of ripening, Big Beef belongs to the mid-early varieties. Ripening of tomatoes occurs 99 days after the emergence of full shoots. True, the speed of this process is significantly influenced by the weather, therefore, in the northern regions, ripening can begin on the 105th day;
  • in the greenhouses of our hero, the fruiting period will be somewhat longer than in an open bed. But on the other hand, in the sun, the fruits acquire a brighter taste;
  • marketable yield is 9.4 kg per 1 square meter. According to other sources, up to 4.5 kg are removed from one plant. To increase yields, experienced gardeners recommend sacrificing the first fruit brush. Without it, the plant has a chance to form more inflorescences and speed up the ripening process of tomatoes;
  • tomato has decent immunity. The plant actively resists verticillium, tobacco mosaic virus, fusarium, alternaria stem cancer, gray leaf spot. Shows intermediate resistance to rootworm nematode;
  • this variety is especially valued for its good resistance to sharp drops in temperature, which is, in general, a rarity for pampered large-fruited crops;
  • but in the southern regions, where Big Beef is mainly grown outdoors, too high temperatures can cause the flowers to dry out and the ovary to fall off;
  • the fruits are resistant to cracking, but they should not be overexposed on the hands, otherwise this trouble cannot be avoided. In addition, excessive moisture can cause cracking;
  • I would like to say separately about the marketability of the fruits. Over the years of cultivation, tomato growers have never complained about deformed or ugly tomatoes. So we can say with confidence that tomatoes are highly marketable and extra-quality;
  • fruits removed at the stage of blanche or technical ripeness ripen perfectly in room conditions;

  • despite its large fruit size, the harvest of this variety is able to withstand long-term transportation. Keeping quality is also good, without loss of presentation and taste, Big Beef fruits can be stored for a whole week;
  • the way of use is universal. Delicate, sugary tomato pulp is an excellent base for any vitamin salad. The sliced tomato can be placed on the sandwich. In addition, excellent quality tomato products are obtained from the harvest. Small fruits can also be used for whole-fruit canning.

Agrotechnics

Regardless of whether the culture is to grow in open or protected ground, you first need to grow seedlings. The time for sowing seeds can be easily calculated independently, taking into account the climatic features of the region. Dived and hardened seedlings at the age of 55 - 60 days are suitable for transplantation. The recommended planting density is no more than 4 pieces per 1 square meter. It can be planted according to the scheme: 50 × 40 cm. When cultivating Big Beef in a closed ground, it is recommended to tie the bushes to a trellis, in an open garden you can grow the variety as a cola crop. After the garter, the plant is formed into one, rarely 2 stems. For this, stepchildren who have grown up to 5 centimeters in length are removed 2 times a week. Leaving is uncomplicated. Watering begins immediately after transplanting. The soil should be kept in a moderately moist state. In the greenhouse, it is imperative to control the total humidity. The culture is demanding on the introduction of mineral fertilizers. The greatest consumption of nutrients begins during the fruiting period. At this time, the plant needs more phosphorus-potassium compounds, the introduction of nitrogen is reduced. Harvesting is carried out 2 times a week, preventing the tomatoes from overripe.

The Big Beef hybrid is valued for its large extra-quality fruits with a pleasant delicate taste and excellent pulp structure. Many vegetable growers were satisfied with the yield and resistance of the crop to diseases and cold snaps. But nevertheless, beginners need to study the needs of the plant well before growing this tomato, since without proper care, the variety will not be able to show its best qualities. A big minus of the variety is the inability to collect seeds on your own and the high price of seed.

I consider this hybrid to be the pearl of my “tomato collection”: if I think about sowing or not sowing about other varieties, then about this one never - I sow its seeds first of all. Everyone in my family loves tomatoes and everyone is delighted with these: the fruits are perfectly even, beautifully colored, with a thin skin, there is a lot of pulp - it is dense, but pleasant (like jelly), does not spread. Tomatoes are classified as salad tomatoes - they are great for freezing.The hybrid grows very easily - it has good immunity, excellent fruit set, tomatoes do not crack, the only thing is that you have to pinch and normalize the amount of ovary, otherwise in my climate not all tomatoes have time to ripen.
