Choosing a worthy apple variety is not a joke. The most popular, as a rule, are the late autumn and winter varieties, which have the longest shelf life. But this is not the only selection parameter. Important characteristics are early maturity and yield. But no one took off the taste either, and this criterion in many cases is decisive. An interesting option that combines all the listed characteristics is the Memory of Ulyanishchev. The founder of the Rossoshan fruit and berry station, M.M. Ulyanishchev. To get a truly outstanding variety, it took a multistage crossing of the famous apple tree Welsey (as a donor of winter hardiness) and Kandil-Kitayka bred by Michurin. Unfortunately, the most interesting and many-year-long work was already completed by the followers of the scientist-breeder A.M. Ulyanischeva, O.I. Kolodiy, N.A. Polyakov. The novelty was dedicated to the outstanding scientist and named after him. An application for registration in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia was submitted at the end of 2000, and after 4 years our heroine received admission to cultivation in the Central Black Earth District (Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Lipetsk, Oryol and Tambov regions). It is rather difficult to judge the characteristics of the new variety, since it has not yet been fully studied by gardeners, but the available reviews speak of the high commercial and consumer qualities of the fruits and the prospects of the culture as a whole.

Description

The tree is fast-growing, but in the final version it grows medium-sized, semi-dwarf type, about 3.5 meters high. Shoot-forming ability is weak, therefore the rounded crown is not very thickened. Shoots are round, covered with slightly pubescent red-brown bark. Lentils are light, well noticeable. The leaves are large, oblong, green, the edge of the leaf is wavy, with crenate serration. The surface is medium-wrinkled, slightly shiny. The petiole is of medium length. Basically, the fruits of the apple tree are formed on ringlets, some are formed on fruit twigs and spears. Apples are placed quite tightly on a branch, sometimes 2-3 pieces together. The flowers of the variety are white, large, five-petal.

The appearance of the fruits of Ulyanishchev's Memory is bright and very attractive. The correct oblong or oval-conical shape is liked by most gardeners and consumers. The skin is thin, but quite firm. The main color of the fruit is light yellow-green, the integumentary color is blurry-striped in the form of a raspberry-red blush over most of the surface. The subcutaneous points are light, large, often located. There is a waxy coating of medium intensity. The funnel is narrow and shallow. Medium-sized saucer, shallow, closed cup. The seed chambers are open. The peduncle is short, does not go beyond the funnel. The pulp is white, juicy, very tender, with a strong aroma. The taste is excellent, dessert, sweet and sour. The assessment of the tasters is high - 4.8 points. Most gardeners highly appreciate the taste of the fruits of this apple tree, calling it one of the best varieties of domestic selection. Fruits are large, average weight 200 - 220 grams, maximum - 300 grams.

Characteristics

• Small size and weak branching in Memory of Ulyanishchev are the result of genetic early maturity. The tree enters the fruiting period for 4 - 5 years;
• the culture blooms in the second half of May, so the flowers do not suffer from recurrent cold snaps;
• ripening period late autumn or early winter. In the south of the Voronezh Region, harvesting maturity occurs by mid-September, maximum - at the end of September. Before use, it is recommended to let the fruits mature for 10-14 days so that they acquire their excellent taste characteristics;
• fruiting occurs regularly, for which the variety is highly valued.Unnaturally cold winters can be a rare exception, after which the tree needs time to recover. However, this period is fast enough;
• according to VNIISPK, the average yield for 5 - 8 years from planting a one-year seedling is 46 c / ha. About 50 - 60 kg are removed from one adult apple tree. The indicator is not bad at all, given the low growth of the tree;
• the originators declare high winter hardiness of the variety, however, within the region of tolerance. According to A.M. Ulyanishcheva, during the years of observation (under the conditions of Rossosh) freezing was not detected even in very severe winters. In the Moscow region, it is recommended to insulate young trees until they enter the fruiting period. If we compare with the rather famous Antonovka ordinary, then our heroine is slightly inferior to her in winter hardiness;

• in the State Register nothing is mentioned about the immunity of the variety. According to VNIISPK, scab lesions occur in epiphytic years. Of the pests, the moth can deliver troubles;
• our heroine has no problems with shedding, the apples hold tightly to the branches, so the productivity of the culture is very high;
• self-fertility in memory of Ulyanishchev is a big plus. Fruiting stability does not depend on weather conditions. No pollinators are required. But if another apple tree grows in the garden, blooming with our heroine at the same time, the quality of the apples and the yield will only increase;
• drought resistance of the culture is not bad. In the western part of the tolerance region, the climate is quite humid, so irrigation is carried out only when necessary. In the southeastern part it will be drier, respectively, and a little more moisture will be required. If the variety is grown in the southern regions, then the plant may suffer from a lack of moisture, so watering should be carried out regularly;
• transportability is the weak link of the variety. Of course, it is possible to transport the crop, but this should be done carefully. Due to the delicate consistency of the pulp, careful handling is required during harvesting and packaging;
• but the keeping quality of apple fruits is high. The consumption period lasts up to 150 days. If you follow the storage standards, the harvest will lie until the beginning of spring. But if the norms are neglected, the thin skin will quickly lose moisture and the fruit will wrinkle;
• the way of use is universal. Due to their excellent taste, apples are used in their natural form, as a dessert. They are also suitable for processing into jam, jam, compote.

Planting and leaving

You can plant the Memory of Ulyanishchev in any of the seasons - spring or autumn. The gardener can determine the time of the procedure himself, taking into account the climatic conditions of the area. When choosing a seedling, you should pay attention to the fact that one- or two-year-old trees show the best survival rate. The crown formation scheme is sparse-tiered. An open, well-heated, well-lit and moderately ventilated area is suitable for planting this variety. This will help keep the spread of disease under control. Soils for the apple tree are preferable to be water-absorbing, loose and nutritious. Loams have suitable characteristics. If there is no such type of soil on the site, then the planting hole is filled with a suitable soil mixture. Agricultural technology practically does not differ from the generally accepted one. But given some of the features of our heroine, small additions are made to the standard agricultural technique. So, for example, given the insufficient shoot-forming ability, to fill the space of the crown with fruit formations, it is recommended to carry out a shortening pruning, which will spur the process of growing new shoots. In the spring, before the buds begin to swell, the tree should be treated with copper-containing preparations to prevent the possible formation of a fungal infection.For the same purpose, if necessary, sanitary pruning is carried out, regardless of the season.

Ulyanishchev's memory, despite its young age, is recognized as one of the best varieties for amateur gardening. Small growth and neat, not too thickened crown greatly facilitate care and harvesting. The crop has a very good early maturity, but experienced gardeners still recommend rationing the first harvest in order to support the healthy and harmonious development of the young tree. By the way, rationing of adult apple trees is a guarantee of stable yield and large-fruited. The gardeners gave the highest assessment to the taste qualities, juicy and aromatic apples are equally loved by both adults and children. A generous harvest, possible, of course, with the gardener's careful attitude to culture, will make it possible to make many tasty and healthy preparations for the winter. Unfortunately, with all the advantages, the apple tree also has disadvantages. First of all, there is insufficient resistance to scab, which in unfavorable years can greatly harm the plant. Too delicate pulp of the fruit does not withstand transportation, especially over long distances. Therefore, the variety is not suitable for industrial cultivation.
