Spathiphyllum Domino variety
The Aroid family is famous for the fact that the vast majority of plants belonging to it do not impose high demands on care and placement. Today, many have a representative of this group in their house - spathiphyllum. There are a sufficient number of varieties of this culture. We will tell you about a type of tropical plant called Domino.
History of creation
The origin of this culture is Holland. Our hero was obtained thanks to the hard work of breeders. As a starting material, they took another species - Wallis' wild spathiphyllum.
On the territory of this European state, this culture is grown on an industrial scale on plantations of garden farms. In particular, Domino was supplied to our country until 2008 in large quantities and was almost always on sale. But over the past year, its acquisition has caused certain difficulties, since it is not possible to find this variety. There is information that for some reason this variety is no longer grown in the Netherlands.
Description of appearance
A plant with an original name and appearance is very unusual, in the good sense of the word. The culture attracts attention, first of all, with its unevenly colored foliage: against a dark green background, there are white stripes and spots with uneven edges of the same color. In general, the leaves are quite bright and noticeable, giving the plant an exotic look. They have a dense, sometimes wrinkled texture and a pointed tip. The shape of the leaves is oval, the surface of young foliage is smooth and shiny, the dimensions are characterized by the following indicators: width from 8 to 10 cm, length 20-25 cm. The height of the plant does not exceed 0.6 meters. Like all spathiphyllums, Domino does not have stems: leaves equipped with cuttings form a rosette.
The variety blooms from May to September, but this rarely happens. It is difficult to achieve the appearance of flowers even with proper care. But the onset of this phase can be triggered by reducing watering and lowering the air temperature in the room where the motley handsome man is. After a month of such a regime, the culture should be returned to its previous conditions of detention. Like all Aroids, the flower of this variety of South American plant consists of a so-called miniature cob (white or yellow) and a white veil, which, after flowering, changes its color to greenish.
Growing features
The flower must be placed in a place filled with sunlight. However, at noon, partial shade should reign near the plant, otherwise the bright leaves will suffer from burns and lose their decorative effect. Planting is carried out in soil rich in humus, peat. Its main component should be made of leafy soil, and it is also recommended to add a little sand, crushed charcoal and pieces of bark. Mix all the listed ingredients in equal amounts. Place a drainage layer on the bottom of the pot.
Spathiphyllum feels good at an air temperature of 18-24 ° C. Sharp temperature fluctuations and drafts are contraindicated for him. Mandatory care for Dominoes includes:
- regular watering with lukewarm, settled water;
- top dressing every two weeks with liquid complex fertilizer during the growing season;
- transplant the plant in February into a larger pot.
The variety is generally resistant to diseases and insect pests. And yet, sometimes the culture is affected by the scale insect, spider mite, mealybug, and aphids. Other growing problems: blackening or yellowing of leaves, drying out of their tips.
Use cases
Dominoes are called an office plant. It looks great in halls, offices. In the house of a motley handsome man, they are most often located on the windows. To preserve the decorative effect of spathiphyllum, it is necessary to promptly remove dead leaves and faded inflorescences.
