Megaton is a medium-late-ripening white cabbage variety originated by the Dutch seed company Bejo Zaden. From the emergence of full shoots to harvest, 136 - 168 days pass. In 1996, the variety was included in the state register. Currently, it is approved for use in all regions of Russia, except for the Middle Volga region (Republic of Mordovia, Penza region, Samara region, Republic of Tatarstan, Ulyanovsk region).
The rosette of leaves is large, horizontal or semi-raised. The leaves are large, rounded, strongly concave, with a wavy edge. The color of the leaves is light green with a waxy bloom of medium intensity. Heads of cabbage are juicy, dense, large, round, smooth, light green, semi-covered, with an average weight of 3-4 kg (some specimens reach 10-15 kg). The covering leaves are slightly wrinkled, with an anthocyanin sheen. The inner stalk is very short (up to 15 cm).
The yield of marketable products is 586 - 934 c / ha, which exceeds by 91 - 147 c / ha the indicators of the standard varieties Podarok and Slava Gribovskaya 231. The maximum marketable yield recorded in the Moscow region is 1053 c / ha (this is 361 c / ha above standard Amager 611).

This cabbage has a high taste when fresh, it is juicy and crispy. But, it is worth noting that the leaves contain too much sugar, and therefore Megaton is not suitable for preparing fresh salads and some culinary dishes (for example, cabbage rolls). But this hybrid is ideal for fermentation.
Advantages of Megaton cabbage: high yield, resistance to fungal diseases (fusarium wilting, keela, gray rot). In general, gardeners' reviews for this variety are always positive.
Among the disadvantages can be noted a short shelf life (only 1 - 3 months).
Megaton has been in prison for many years. The cost of seeds is higher than some varieties, but justifies itself in full. Good germination, large dense heads of cabbage. The largest was filmed 10 kg.
All sorts of midges, aphids, caterpillars love him. I spray the infusion of the arrows of garlic: about 0.5 liters per 10 liters of water. I always plant in deep grooves, so that later moisture under the leaves will remain in the heat. I take off the heads of cabbage with the first snow and salted. We tried to store it in the cellar, where it is cool and dry. The last head of cabbage was obtained in March. The top leaves rotted 20 percent, but everything inside was fine. By the way, for fresh salads, it's also not bad, maybe a little harsh, but if you mash it well, it's fine.
Yes, indeed, the cabbage is excellent. I grew it in a temperate climate, in the arid region of Donbass. In Sochi, the climate is more humid, I have not tried planting here yet. So, cabbage is really very fond of all sorts of pests. They attacked her, if she did not have time to check it, they ate it in a sieve! What I didn’t spray (not with chemistry), nothing helps, especially in a drought, many flea beetles attacked and caterpillars. Mixed plantings mixed with flowers and spices, covering with special protective non-woven materials, help well. I liked the cabbage itself because it gives a good harvest and does not get sick. Planted with seedlings in May under half-liter jars (in case of freezing and from chickens). It grows and gets stronger perfectly, until we have a heat and drought. Then you have to often water and feed, drive pests. Collected at the end of October, because of our dry and hot climate, it developed more slowly. Stored in a cellar, hung by a stump with a hook under the ceiling.Stored well, enough for the winter. Most were salted as they were consumed. I didn’t like the salad, it’s a little rude.
Planted Megaton this year for the first time and is very happy. It was a very dry and hot summer, only Megaton and June had normal heads of cabbage. Surprisingly, this variety did not suffer from insects at all without any spraying.
The quality of the Dutch hybrids speaks for itself: Megaton is one of the most successful varieties of late cabbage. This cabbage consistently gave the highest yields in my area: the average weight was 10 kg, the maximum weight was 13.5 kg. It responds well to abundant regular watering during the period of active growth, sprinkling with ash and soda helps against some pests. It is actively affected by a flea (leaves an openwork mesh from the leaves), a scoop (eats a growth point in the spring - the cabbage does not grow), a whitewash (spoils an already forming head of cabbage). The cold, belated summer of 2017 negatively affected the harvest, the maximum was only 7 - 8 kg. In a cool dry place it is stored until the New Year without loss in quality, I use it for fermentation and stewing.
I live 5 km from Tver. Planted Megaton, Aggressor, Moscow late and Kolobok. Seedlings were planted on June 9th. I did not use any fertilizers, only natural farming. I did not water it, since there is a water supply system on the site, but there has been no water for many years - they cut it off, apparently someone thought that the gardeners did not need water! For the whole summer I spud once and twice cut the grass around the plants with a trimmer! The harvest had to be harvested on September 30th due to envious and lazy people - they began to cut cabbage, steal! Well, okay! Variety Megaton and Aggressor showed very good results - average weight 6 - 8 kg, some heads of cabbage reached 12 kg. Kolobok and Moskovskaya late in size and weight are smaller - but they are denser and heavier as bricks! Their average weight is 4 - 6 kg. I planted about 300 bushes somewhere - I harvested about 800 kg! At the same time, part of the harvest was stolen and part simply did not form! Megaton - both germination and productivity are beyond praise! I recommend landing!
