Juvel potato variety

Juvel is a German ultra-early potato variety (Solanum tuberosum) for table use. Bred by breeders of the company "Bavaria-Saat Vertriebs GmbH", it is not included in the state register of plants of the Russian Federation, but has gained wide popularity in many regions of Russia. Differs in high productivity, adaptation to any soil and climate. Suitable for mechanical cleaning and long-term storage. Recommended for growing on small farms and personal backyards. Can produce two crops per season.

The period from full germination to ripening is only 50-65 days.

The plant is short, of an intermediate type, erect or semi-erect, with a moderate amount of green mass. Leaves are medium-sized, simple, dark green in color, with slight waviness at the edges. The flowers of the potato are large, light purple, collected in compact corollas.

In one nest, up to 20 tubers with an average weight of 80-150 grams are formed. Juvel's tubers are oval in shape, slightly elongated, the surface is even, without bumps. The rind is light yellow, firm, smooth to the touch. The pulp is yellow, does not darken during cutting and heat treatment. The eyes are small, superficial, and inconspicuous.

The potential yield is quite high - up to 750 kg / ha, when digging for 65-75 days of vegetation. When digging on the 45th day after full germination, it is possible to receive up to 400 c / ha. The marketability of tubers is high, keeping quality is 94%.

The taste of the Juvel variety is average, even for an amateur. It is classified as culinary type B (according to the EAPR classification - the European Association for Potato Research), that is, to the group of medium-boiling. The taste is mediocre without any outstanding features. The tubers are suitable for all kinds of dishes, but they will work best when fried, as well as as an addition to soups, salads or vegetable mixtures. Can be used on an industrial scale for the manufacture of semi-finished products and chips. The starch content in the pulp is 10-15%.

According to gardeners, the taste of this variety is not so bad. Someone even praises this potato very much, especially as a boiled young potato with dill. Someone does not like it boiled and mashed, but fried it is considered very excellent. And to some, it even seems bland in any dish. Well, as they say, tastes differ!

Juvel is undemanding to soil and climate, adapts well to any growing conditions. Shows the best yield on light fertile soils. It responds well to fertilization and abundant watering. Also, plants can easily tolerate short-term temperature fluctuations. Below are some agronomic features to help you achieve the best yield.

  • It is strongly recommended to germinate the tubers 2-3 weeks before planting. This will contribute to better germination and earlier return of marketable products. It is also necessary to pickle the tubers with drugs against diseases specific to your growing area.
  • The site for planting should be chosen sunny.
  • Tubers are planted according to the scheme 60 × 25-30 cm, the embedding depth is 8-10 cm.
  • Juvel loves moist soil. It is necessary to ensure timely abundant irrigation, the best solution would be to install automatic irrigation systems.
  • Do not forget about the standard agricultural practices, they contribute to an increase in the amount of the crop. This is weeding, and loosening of the soil, hilling, as well as mandatory preventive treatment against diseases and pests.
  • Maintain crop rotation. When potatoes are planted in an area where other nightshades have previously grown, the likelihood of infection of plants with diseases characteristic of this crop increases.

The originator offers a short list of fertilization recommendations.

  • Nitrogen fertilization should be carried out in a minimum amount. If necessary, it is possible to apply about 140 kg / ha at planting.Excessive nitrogen content in the soil leads to a slowdown in the development of tubers and a deterioration in their taste, as well as to the activation of the growth of tops.
  • Potash complexes are applied in medium doses, about 150 kg / ha. However, it is possible to apply higher dosages, up to 300 kg / ha.
  • Phosphate fertilizers should be applied in an amount of about 100 kg / ha.
  • Fertilizing potatoes with magnesium is carried out at the rate of 60-80 kg per hectare of area.

Do not forget that the dosage must be adjusted depending on the characteristics of your specific soil and climatic conditions of the season.

Juvel is resistant to golden cyst nematode, cancer, Y virus, rot, leaf roll virus. Medium resistant to late blight pathogen on tops, tubers are very rarely affected.

The variety is distinguished by a very early formation of tubers, due to which, already on the 45th day of the growing season, the first digging can be carried out in order to enjoy young potatoes. In addition, with proper care and proper agricultural technology, two full-fledged crops can be harvested in one season. A huge advantage of the variety is its resistance to short-term drought, which is very valuable for cultivation in the southern regions of the country.

Juvel has got very good reviews about himself. Gardeners fell in love with it for its high yield, early and friendly formation of tubers, excellent presentation, versatility in cooking, undemanding to growing conditions. It is also necessary to mention the good keeping quality - tubers do not germinate for a long time, they can be stored until the spring of next year. There are practically no disadvantages of this potato, except for the peculiar taste and increased sensitivity to soil moisture. But in terms of the rest of its indicators, it is clearly not inferior to other modern ultra-early varieties of German selection, and sometimes it can even give them a head start!
