Potato variety Fairy Tale

Fairy Tale is a medium-early variety of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) for table use. Bred by the specialists of the Leningrad Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture "Belogorka" in cooperation with the "Liga" Breeding Firm LLC. In 2004, it was included in the state register of plants of the Russian Federation, approved for cultivation in three regions: Middle Volga, Ural, Far East. It is a three-species hybrid, when obtained were used varieties of ordinary cultivated potatoes, as well as the species solanum vernei and s. demissum. The authors are: Hajiyev Nadim Makhish oglu, Ivanov Mikhail Vasilievich, Lebedeva Vera Aleksandrovna. The hybrid has a high yield and multi-tuberity. Gives a large amount of marketable products even when grown from small (20-30 grams) tubers.

From the appearance of full shoots to harvesting, 70-85 days pass.

Plant of medium height, leaf type, erect or semi-erect. The leaves are large, intermediate type, light green in color. The leaves are medium in size. Low intensity waviness is observed along the edges of the sheet plate. Skazka's flowers are medium to large, pale red-violet with white tips.

The root system is well developed, one plant can produce more than 30 tubers! The average weight of commercial copies is 70-130 grams. The tubers have a rounded-oval, slightly flattened shape. The peel is light yellow, smooth. The cut flesh is white in color. The eyes are small, colored red, and stand out against the general background. Pink spots of various shapes can be observed around them, however, the intensity of the pink tint is not as strong as, for example, in the variety Picasso... The depth of the eyes is average.

The marketable yield of potatoes, according to the results of state tests, was recorded in the range of 192-223 centners / ha, 62-91 centners / ha higher than the results of Post 86. The largest amount was obtained in the Republic of Tatarstan - 326 centners of tubers were harvested from one hectare of area , which is 150 c / ha more than the standard Nevsky... According to the originators, the indicator can reach 400 c / ha, but such a result can be achieved only in the most favorable growing conditions. Marketability of tubers 80-88%, keeping quality 91%.

The taste of the Fairy Tale is really fabulous! The tubers are poorly boiled, when cooked and cut, they retain their snow-white color, and look very attractive when finished. They are best suited for frying, including deep-fried, making salads, soups, vegetable mixtures. The starch content in the pulp ranges from 13.5-17.1%.

This variety can be grown on a wide variety of soils, but the plant shows the best productivity on light loams and sandy loams, as well as on developed peatlands. In general, potatoes are unpretentious in care, especially when cultivated on loose, fertile soils. However, it should be said that the yield, and in particular the number of small tubers, very much depends on the growing conditions. For example, many gardeners complain about the large number of little things in the nests. This is due to the insufficient provision of plants with nutrients and minerals. As already noted, the Tale is distinguished by the formation of a large number of tubers, and it also belongs to varieties with an intensive type of growth, therefore, in order to obtain large marketable potatoes, planting should be provided with sufficient nutrition. Firstly, the site for planting must be well prepared (fertilized, plowed, furrowed), and secondly, as necessary, organic and mineral fertilizers must be added to the soil in increased quantities.

Another feature of our hero is the ability to obtain a very large yield when planting small seed tubers. Even when planting specimens weighing no more than 30 grams, an impressive successful result can await you! Of course, this will require taking good care of the plants and providing them with adequate nutrition. They will respond perfectly to all your efforts. Of the agrotechnical nuances, it should be noted only the dislike of plants for high soil moisture, so you should not get carried away with watering.

Potatoes are resistant to cancer, common scab, various viruses, moderately resistant to macrosporosis. Susceptible to golden cyst nematode. According to the All-Russian Research Institute of Phytopathology, it is vulnerable to late blight in tops, but moderately resistant in tubers.

Summing up, we can say that our hero has a very impressive potential for productivity, which is quite simple to reveal if you show a little attention to the plants. Skillful gardeners appreciate this variety very much for its huge number of tubers in the nest, moreover, not small or medium, but very large ones, weighing about 150 grams each. Also, many speak very well about the taste of the Fairy Tale, its unpretentiousness, as well as its excellent presentation and excellent keeping quality.

But the disadvantages are also worth mentioning. First of all, this is the dependence of yield on weather conditions. In cold and rainy seasons, the amount of harvest can be significantly reduced, while the proportion of fines in the nest can be large. Also, the disadvantages include the exactingness of this potato to soil fertility, but this is quite normal - the plant clearly needs more nutrients to form such a large number of tubers.

I have grown this variety for 3 years, from seeds to marketable tubers.
I started the first year with seeds, seedlings are weak, germination is good, but very demanding for light. Result: strong tops, a lot of potatoes at the output, 90% small nodules (a feature of growing from seeds). The taste is excellent, keeping quality is good.
2nd year planted small nodules. No beetles, no disease. In autumn, high-quality tops and high-quality potatoes, 10 - 20 pcs. from the bush.
In the 3rd year, a big minus was revealed for our strip (Kirov region) - the ripening period was about 120 days. The bushes were chilled, the harvest was modest, so this variety had to be abandoned in favor of early varieties.
And since the variety is good - I recommend it!
