Potato variety Zhukovsky (Zhukovsky early)
Zhukovsky, or Zhukovsky early, is a potato variety (Solanum tuberosum) that ripens very early. Received at the All-Russian Research Institute of Potato Economy A.G. Lorkha when crossing Berry and Hydra varieties. Added to the state register of varieties of Russia in 1993. Approved for use in all regions of the Russian Federation, except for the North and East Siberian regions. The authorship is assigned to V.S. Andreeva, L.N. Konovalova, N.I. Petrunei, A.P. Glukhov, N.N. Mamicheva, B. A, Pisarev, L.I. Shamakova, I.M. Yashina and A.N. Rudnev.
Plants are semi-spreading, stem type, of medium height. The leaves are glossy, small, green in color. Long flowering, medium intensity. Corolla of red-violet color.
When planting Zhukovsky potatoes in the first decade of May, the first crop can be harvested in mid-July. At this time, the tubers are still developing and will be small and medium in size. By mid-August, the tubers become large and aligned. Thus, from the moment of planting the seed in the ground until the first harvest, only 60 - 65 days pass.
Tubers are pink, round-oval, medium to large in size. The pulp is white, dense, not powdery, watery (common to all early varieties), does not crumble during cooking. The peel is smooth and transparent. The eyes are superficial, red, the depth of the eyes is shallow. The number of tubers in the nest is medium to high (up to 15 commercial size tubers). The yield of marketable tubers is 400 - 450 kg / ha. Marketable tuber weight - 100 - 120 grams. Marketability is high - it is 90 - 92%.
A variety for table use, with good to medium taste. Designed for consumption in the summer-autumn period. The pulp is slightly sweetish. Starch content - 10 - 12%. These potatoes are suitable for frying, preparing salads, boiling peeled and "uniform", especially with early harvest. Tubers are kept intact during cooking, after cooking they are easily cut into slices, slices and sticks. However, as gardeners note, in boiled and mashed potatoes, the taste of the tubers is mediocre.
Zhukovsky early is characterized by high resistance to potato cancer, common scab and golden potato cyst nematode. Medium resistant to bacteriosis, rhizoctonia and mosaic viruses. However, tubers and tops of this variety are susceptible to late blight pathogen.
Valuable qualities of the variety: high yield, shade and drought resistance, very early tuberization and ripening, stable quality of tubers under various cultivation conditions, excellent quality for preparing boiled "young" potatoes.
The disadvantages include only average taste and lack of resistance to late blight. Also, in case of untimely collection, if the soil is excessively moist, the tubers begin to rot. It is worth noting that if the harvest is not carried out on time and this potato is overexposed in the garden, it loses its taste. Perhaps this is due to the conflicting reviews of gardeners about the taste of this potato - some are extremely unhappy with them, others have a completely opposite opinion.
Tuberization in Zhukovsky potatoes is early extended, therefore, tubers can be harvested during the entire period of crop formation. During the growing season, the stolons of this variety spread to the sides. Thanks to this, when planting, for example, in straw, it is convenient, without digging a bush, to collect several potatoes for food. From one seed potato of the 1st reproduction, you can get from 4 to 5.5 kg of yield.
For two years I have been growing this variety of potatoes, hoping that it will please me. But it didn’t happen. Tubers grow small, "pea", even in comparison with other early and mid-season varieties growing nearby. Potatoes spread in different directions, you have to look for when digging. The taste is empty, rustic, not pronounced, which is what you want so much from young fresh potatoes. Colorado potato beetle and late blight are strongly affected. I liked it more baked with the peel. Replaced with more productive varieties.
