Elvira strawberry variety
Elvira is an early-ripening non-repaired variety of garden strawberries (strawberries) for universal use. It was bred in the Netherlands and took root well in many parts of our country. Recommended for cultivation under film shelters and in greenhouses, it also shows good results in the open field. The variety is valued for its large fruit size, good yield, excellent taste and resistance to various diseases, as well as shade tolerance.
The plant is vigorous, medium-sized, spreading, moderately leafy. Leaves are medium in size, green in color with an emerald tint. Strawberry flower stalks are strong, multi-primordial, and lie on the ground under the weight of the harvest. The berries are rather large, with a wide conical rounded shape with a neck, very uniform in the total mass. The skin is bright red with a glossy sheen. Achenes are yellow, shallowly submerged. The flesh is red, firm, but not firm, without crunch on the bite, juicy, very aromatic.
The taste of the berries is excellent, very sweet, with a slight sourness that harmoniously dilutes the palette. Elvira fruits are universal in use, beautiful in their natural form, suitable for any processing, freezing, perfectly decorate various desserts. The berries tolerate transportation and long-term storage very well, making the variety suitable for commercial cultivation in order to sell fresh produce to the market.
Fruiting of strawberries is very stable, the fruits do not tend to become smaller by the end of the season, on average, their weight is 30-40 grams, during the first harvest, specimens weighing about 60 grams are observed. Elvira's yield is decent, from one bush it is possible to collect from 500 grams to 1 kg of berries, or even more, depending on the intensity of agricultural technology.
The variety is very resistant to various diseases of a fungal nature, moreover, this invulnerability extends both to the root system and green mass, and to the fruits. Of course, prevention is still highly desirable, especially if you are growing your strawberries commercially and want to get the most out of them. Due to its immunity to fungal diseases, Elvira can be grown in an area with high humidity, it also feels very good in greenhouses.
Our heroine has good winter hardiness, she feels quite comfortable in cool regions, but shelter never hurts. Drought resistance of plants is relative, they will survive short periods without moisture, but long-term drought will have a very detrimental effect on the health and productivity of the bushes. In general, the variety is very calm about various weather fluctuations, moreover, it is shade-tolerant and can consistently bear fruit perfectly in a not very hot summer with abundant rainfall.
There are no outstanding features in the agricultural technology of this strawberry, everything is pretty standard. Do not forget to carry out the most basic care measures, and also do not skimp on feeding if you want to get a bountiful and tasty harvest. Also, do not neglect the timely rejuvenation of the plantation. This should be done at least once every 4-5 years; with commercial cultivation, the renewal of the planting material is relevant after two years of using the plants.
Elvira is a wonderful Dutch variety worthy of a spot on your property. Unfortunately, it did not become as popular as many of its "compatriots" and is rarely mentioned in the list of the best among the early maturing varieties. However, this strawberry clearly deserves attention. Gardeners speak very warmly of her, and she has repeatedly fallen into the group of favorites.
I always treated the garden strawberries of early varieties with slight disdain - no matter how much I tried, the taste did not suit me (whatever one may say, but for an early berry there is still little - heat, light, and water). But when I tried the berries of this variety, I radically changed my mind - the berries are excellent (both in taste and in size). We do not sell the early berries - we eat them all ourselves, and these berries are also ideal for making desserts (berries can be cut - they will not flow or lose their shape), they also freeze and thaw perfectly. About the health of this strawberry, I can say that it is also excellent - the bushes do not suffer from root rot, drought and frost.
