Figaro strawberry variety
Figaro is a mid-season, non-repairable variety of garden strawberries (strawberries) for universal use. It was bred in the Netherlands in the late 90s, did not gain wide popularity and went unnoticed by most farmers and gardeners. The plant has good winter hardiness, so it can be grown in rather cold regions of Russia. The variety is suitable for cultivation in a summer cottage, it is not used for commercial purposes at the moment, losing to modern innovations in all characteristics.
The plant is powerful, erect. Leaves are light green in color. The flowers are white, bisexual. Peduncles are long, strong, high, located above the level of the leaves, tend to be laid on the ground under the weight of the crop. Berries are medium to large in size, conical in shape. The skin is orange-red, shiny. The pulp is pink in color, dense, but not firm, with a pleasant texture, aromatic.
The taste of the variety is not bad, although the gardeners did not appreciate them very well. In this case, there may be two reasons for dissatisfaction - either mistakes in agricultural technology or the climatic conditions of the region did not allow strawberries to gain a full-fledged palette of taste, or Figaro itself does not shine with outstanding consumer qualities. And, frankly, gardeners are more inclined towards the second option. The fruits are versatile in use, suitable for processing, fresh consumption and freezing. The berries tolerate transportation well, have a pretty good presentation, but we will not talk about the commercial cultivation of this variety.
The average weight of berries in the season is about 20 grams, although gardeners note that Figaro suffers from small fruits. In general, it is declared as high-yielding, and not just, but "one of the highest-yielding." To be honest, this statement bears little resemblance to the truth. This variety does not compare with the generally recognized favorites of the strawberry market, and gardeners confirm this. Given that it is not used commercially, it can be concluded that it really does not have outstanding yield potential. It is very difficult to give specific numbers, there is very little information, so we will not invent and say so - our hero will not please you with productivity, if you need a high-yielding variety, take a look at the popular "giants" of the strawberry market.
Strawberries are resistant to diseases of the root system and gray mold, moderately susceptible to powdery mildew. The winter hardiness of the variety is good, it can be successfully grown in rather cold regions, but a mild climate without extremely low temperatures in winter is still preferable. Heat resistance and drought resistance in Figaro are at a low level, in the southern hot regions, its cultivation will be extremely problematic.
In agricultural technology, our hero is quite standard, requires only basic care, but not everything is so simple. The fact is that in different climatic conditions, plants behave differently. So, in the southern regions you will have to fight for the harvest, as well as in very cold ones. By the way, there is some confusion with the ripening period of the variety - in warm areas it starts the season on a par with mid-season ones, in cold areas it catches up with later ones. If we summarize the gardeners' reviews, we can say the following: either the gardeners could not find a "key" for this strawberry, or it is too capricious, or it does not have much potential, therefore it does not justify expectations both in terms of yield and taste.
Figaro is a very controversial variety that has failed to win the trust of either farmers or summer residents.What is wrong with him, and why does the advertisement shout one thing, but in fact it turns out another? To be honest, the answer to this question is rather difficult. All in all, this strawberry can really disappoint you, so look at a few more options before buying and pick the best one.
Figaro is the tastiest strawberry I've ever tasted! The taste of the berry is incomparable and similar to any other variety! But this is the only plus. Of the cons of the variety:
-bad wintering in the middle lane, you need shelter for the winter;
-low ability to form whiskers, as a result - poor vegetative propagation;
-the berries are large, but few of them;
- to get a good harvest, you need to strictly follow agricultural practices.
There were never any small fruits. Under bad conditions, there was one berry, but large. In general, the grade has good reviews. But it's not for the lazy.
I agree 100%, but for me this variety winters well without shelter, just north of Moscow. But! I will delete, because ALL weevils in our area flock to Figaro !!! 20-30 beetles per bush. I had time to spray everything. No bushes. At the same time, it is clean on small-fruited strawberries and on Elizabeth. I will leave three bushes as a distracting bait)))) Yes, even fungal diseases strongly affect him.
Yes, I agree, this is the most delicious variety, the main thing is that the berry ripens to the end. The berries are beautiful, large, dense. But in my Primorsky Territory it often freezes out, requires good shelter for the winter.
