Rose of Abu Dhabi (Zayed of Abu Dhabi)

As can be seen from the Latin name, the full name of this variety should sound like this: Zayed of Abu Dhabi. But we have got accustomed to an abbreviated version, which is understandable from the point of view of pronunciation.

History of creation

The variety was created by the Frenchman Dominique Massad in 2000. In the creation of the variety were used: miniflora "Sweet Dream", floribundas "Magenta" and "Amber Queen". In France, she was presented at the 2006 exhibition by the Pierre Guillot nursery under the name "Zayed from Abu Dhabi". According to the classification, it belongs to the typical English park roses, which arose in the last quarter of the 20th century thanks to the efforts of the breeder David Austin. It is known that later the gardeners of Holland, Germany, and France followed this path; the French and turned out to be the authors of the variety in question, which is part of an extensive group of Shrubs (spray roses).

Description of appearance

This rose looks like a strong, powerful bush with a height of 70 to 100 cm. At the same time, the bush is open, a little more than half a meter wide. Shoots are strong, erect, densely covered with beautiful, glossy foliage of dark green color.

Like any rose, this one can also be proud of its flowers first of all. They always have an even red color, the intensity of which depends little on the lighting and the quality of the soil (which is often observed in other varieties). Other characteristics of the flower are as follows:

  • The size is medium, with a diameter of 8 to 10 cm.
  • The shape of the bud can vary significantly, from ovoid and cupped to rosette. According to this indicator, Abu Dhabi does not differ in constancy.
  • The flower is densely double, it can contain over fifty petals. Because of this, the bush always looks abundantly flowering, even if the number of flowers on it is not so great.
  • Flowers on the shoot can also be single or collected in small inflorescences. In the latter case, their sizes are much smaller than average.
  • The aroma is sweetish, pleasant, usually weak, but sometimes it can be described as moderate in intensity.

Other features of the variety

It blooms repeatedly and for a long time, from the beginning of summer to the very cold. The frost resistance of this variety, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), corresponds to zones 6 to 9. It should be borne in mind that the plant is guaranteed to withstand a drop in temperature to -15 ° (with good shelter and mulching, it is much lower).

Experts consider the exceptional resistance of the variety to various common diseases, in particular to powdery mildew and black spot, almost the main feature of Abu Dhabi. To make this rose sick, you need to "try" hard. For this reason, it is always interesting to people who, for various reasons, cannot pay enough attention to their plants.

Usually the variety is grown in group plantings, although it also looks good as a separate plant that performs an independent decorative role.

Summing up, we can say that Zayed of Abu Dhabi will be a real find if you want to become the owner of a good rose, but your garden plot does not have the best soils, and circumstances do not allow you to tinker with the plant systematically and much.

This variety appeared with me many years ago - it immediately struck me with its beauty and still remains in my favorites. How not to love him? The bush grows powerful, with strong thick stems, there are always a lot of buds and flowers, they are large and fragrant, and this rose hibernates very well (it can withstand frosts much lower than the breeder claims), however, I cover it a little - I bend it down and throw it on top ordinary land. She is also resistant to diseases - she never got sick with anything, but I still treat her with a solution of copper sulfate in the spring (more for prevention and for my calming, than to fight infections).
