Rose Flammentanz
On the market, this variety can be found under other names, for example: Flame Dance, Flaming Dance, Vlammenspel, KORflata.
History of creation
This variety of German selection was bred in the renowned, almost legendary nursery of William Kordes (W. Kordes Söhne (Retail)). This rose Kordes II (the son of the founder of the nursery) received in 1952, crossing the varieties Kordesii and Rosa rubiginosa, and giving it the official registration name KORflata. At the 1955 exhibition, the variety was presented under the name Flammentanz. Then he was officially registered.
Classification and Description
Refers to the classic climbing large-flowered roses. Differs in powerful growth, lashes easily grow up to 3 meters. Some are capable of reaching the five-meter mark. The shoots are densely covered with bright green, shiny and large foliage, the branches are prickly due to the many thorns. The breeder himself considered this variety to be his best large-flowered hybrid.
Characteristics of flowers
A blooming Flamenant can conquer even the roughest soul! Its flowers burn with a bright red fire, and sometimes there are so many of them that the shoots bend under the weight of this fiery rampage. Moreover, they can be located both singly and in large inflorescences, sometimes up to 15 flowers in each. During the flowering period, the bush emits a light, pleasant aroma.
Each blossoming flower reaches 8 to 12 cm in diameter and consists of about two dozen double petals. In the center, against a red background, large yellow stamens stand out. And only one drawback always frustrated William Cordes - his beloved rose blooms only once a season. This flowering begins mainly in May, and lasts without interruption from one to one and a half months.
Other features
Such an amazing bloom is not the last advantage of our heroine. The Flamenant is renowned for its resistance to common rose diseases. If properly cared for, especially not shaded and provided with adequate ventilation, it will not be affected by fungal diseases at all.
In addition, the variety is characterized by increased resistance to frost, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), it can grow in zones 5 to 9, withstanding sometimes thirty-degree frosts. For this reason, it has long become perhaps the most popular rose in the Scandinavian countries.
Most often, this variety is used for landscaping fences, gazebos, vertical walls. It looks great on a pergola, it will decorate the front gate or a high gate. It is also introduced into the composition of group plantings for vertical gardening of flower beds.
It should be borne in mind that the bush requires regular pruning and shaping, otherwise it quickly takes on a spreading, slightly sloppy shape.
In order for the variety to show its best qualities, it must be planted in bright places with nutritious, well-drained, preferably sandy loam soil.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that Flamentanz will be an excellent choice for those gardeners who do not yet have sufficient experience in caring for more capricious varieties. Suffice it to say that for the winter, its whips, half cut, can simply be covered with agrofibre - this is enough for a successful wintering.
Oh, that old rose - it still grew in my grandmother's garden. A very powerful and unkillable plant - every year an avalanche of bright red fragrant flowers bloomed amazingly! It grew for many years, but when my grandmother passed away, it gradually withered away without leaving ... Then I was looking for a seedling for several years - I hardly found a little suffocate, but as soon as the cuttings got into the soil, it began to grow rapidly! I was always surprised at the strength of the growth of this rose - if there is water, it grows by leaps and bounds even without additional fertilizing, manages to grow long thick lashes during the season. It does not get sick, even fungal infections bypass it, only green beetles annoy them, which diligently eat up bright buds. For the winter, we lay the branches on the ground, press them with bricks and throw the earth on top - it hibernates almost always well, but even if it freezes, it quickly recovers (to awaken the sleeping buds, I treat it with magnesium sulfate). In general, this is a very reliable variety with which you can and should start a novice rose grower.
Rosa Flamentants is very popular here, in the south of Belarus. In May, it looks out from almost every hedge. I have been growing for ten years. Very hardy, frost-resistant. For some years it hibernated without shelter, the whips froze over, but they always recovered well. Blooms profusely every year, one wave. Self-cleaning. Sometimes at the end of August, rare single flowers appear.
I have never been sick with powdery mildew, although a rose grows nearby, which has this problem every year. Black spot appears sometimes in October on single leaves.
But I see rust every year. It does not capture the entire bush, but a couple of shoots have to be cut out.
I have such a rose for 13 years, a very powerful bush, in May-June it is all drenched in flowers. It grows without feeding, without chemical treatment, it is very unpretentious and never hides for the winter. The only thing that requires spring pruning every year, because the branches grow rapidly and a lot and reach a height of 2.5 -3 m. It does not need support, since the branches are rigid and straight.
