Red ball is a variety of Chinese plum (Prunus salicina) of medium early ripening, bred at the All-Russian Institute of Selection and Technology of Horticulture and Nursery (Moscow). This plum was obtained by crossing the American Burbank cultivar with the Ussuriiskaya Krasnaya cultivar. The authorship belongs to H.K. Enikeev and S.N. Satarova.
The variety has been on the state test since 1987. Added to the state register of the Russian Federation in 1989. Approved for use in the Central (Moscow region) region.
The trees are of medium height (2.5 meters). Crohn medium thickened, drooping, rounded-spreading shape. Fruit ovaries are formed on bouquet twigs and annual shoots. Leaves are green, dull, more than medium in size, oval-lanceolate; the edge of the leaf is serrate. The leaf blade is folded along the central vein.
Fruits are large, round, weighing 35 - 40 grams. The main color of the fruit is yellow-green, the integumentary color is red, with a gray waxy bloom of medium intensity. The skin is thick, dense, with light subcutaneous punctures. The abdominal suture is hardly noticeable.
The pulp is very juicy, sour-sweet, aromatic, slightly fibrous, light yellow in color. The color of the cavity is the same color as the pulp. Tasting taste assessment - 4 points. The stone is smaller than medium in size, semi-detachable.
Table variety intended for fresh consumption. Fast-growing - begins to bear fruit as early as 2 - 3 years after planting in the garden. Fruit ripening occurs at the end of August. In years with a large number of ovaries, the fruits become smaller, and ripening is stretched over time.
Plum Red ball is self-fertile. As pollinators, varieties of Chinese plum are suitable, as well as cherry plum, or Russian plum (Prunus rossica), flowering in the same period. Houseplum (Prunus domestica) is not suitable as a pollinator.
Frost resistance is quite high (up to minus 35 ° C and below). Winter hardiness of trees and fruit buds is below the average level - significantly inferior in this parameter to such varieties as Amurskaya early, Rassvet early and Early... This plum is not resistant to frost after thaws and podoprevanie. For example, in the Khabarovsk Territory, in the first years after planting, a large number of frost breaks are noted.
