Pinocchio tomato variety

Thanks to the painstaking work of breeders who bred dwarf tomato varieties, it is possible to grow a vegetable loved by many not only on the balcony, but simply on the window. Such amazing varieties include a tomato with a name well-known even to children - Pinocchio. The application for registration of the novelty in 1995 was submitted by the Agrofirma "Semko" LTD and the Czech Agrofirma "Moravoseed" Spolecnost s Rucenim Omezenym. After 2 years, the mini-tomato was entered into the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia with admission in all regions. Aleksashova Our hero is recommended for growing in flower pots indoors and on balconies, but, according to reviews, it grows and bears fruit in open ground and in greenhouses.

Description

The plant is determinate, of the standard type, 25 - 30 cm high. The bush is compact due to moderate shoot formation, but it looks very decorative because of the elegant leaf mass and a large number of fruits similar to ripe cherry. The stem is strong and thick. Leaves of an intermediate type, with a medium dissected plate, dark green in color. Up to 10 ovaries are formed in each pinocchio fruit cluster. The peduncle of the variety has an articulation.

Miniature tomatoes are smooth, flat-round in shape. Unripe tomato is light green with a dark spot at the stalk, when ripe it turns red. The skin is glossy, dense, but some even call it harsh. The pulp is juicy, tender, there are 2 - 3 seed chambers, there are quite a lot of seeds. The taste is sweet. The State Register rates the taste as good and excellent. The mass of tomatoes is 15 - 20 grams, but sometimes 30 - 50 gram specimens grow.

Characteristics

  • The State Register attributes little Pinocchio to mid-season varieties. From the moment of germination to the beginning of fruiting, 105 - 110 days pass. Although there is information that tomatoes can be harvested after 90 days, which indicates the possibility of an early ripening period;
  • from mini-bushes, you can collect, although not very large, but quite sufficient harvest. According to the State Register, from 1.0 to 1.5 kg of sweet fruits are removed from one plant. But if you take into account the planting density, then the overall figure will be very good;
  • the first flower clusters appear 4 or 5 weeks after transplanting;
  • the formation and ripening of tomatoes is quick, so you won't have to wait long for the harvest after the ovary appears. But at the same time, the formation of fruit clusters occurs gradually, which somewhat lengthens the fruiting period;
  • the immunity of tomato, despite its modest size and varietal affiliation, can be called heroic. Pinocchio is resistant to many common cultural diseases, which makes it much easier to care for. But bushes can suffer from the invasion of pests. The spider mite, which appears due to dry air, is especially unpleasant. Therefore, during the cultivation of this variety on the window, it is necessary to maintain normal humidity;

  • dense skin helps to avoid cracking of the fruit, even if the humidity is high;
  • transportability and keeping quality of fruits, of course, are not high. It's all to blame for the too soft structure of the pulp;
  • but the way of using mini-tomatoes is universal. Small tomatoes are used to prepare salads, they decorate ready-made dishes. Children love to eat sweet berries straight from the bush. In addition, the dense skin perfectly withstands heat treatment, so the surplus of the crop can be used in whole-fruit canning.

Agrotechnics

Pinocchio can be grown all year round, given its versatile adaptability to various conditions. Therefore, the timing of sowing seeds for seedlings is best calculated independently, taking into account both weather conditions and the place of planting. Seed preparation and seedling cultivation are carried out according to standard rules. The seedlings are ready for transplanting at the age of 50 - 55 days. The recommended planting density is quite high - up to 8 plants per 1 square meter. The bush does not require a garter, as well as pinching.But during the ripening period of tomatoes, due to the heavy workload of the crop, the stem can still collapse under the weight of the brushes. Therefore, during transplantation, it is best to immediately put a support near the bush, to which it will then be easy to tie the plant up.

At home, they use the standard agricultural technology for balcony varieties. It is better to take a pot with a volume of at least 5 liters, so that the plant feels comfortable, be sure to lay drainage on the bottom. More details about how to grow tomatoes on a windowsill, you can find out in one of our articles. In the open field, a mini-bush is usually planted "at the feet" for tall crops. But our hero can decorate any flower bed or act as a decorative border.

The hassle-free Pinocchio is a real find for novice gardeners or for those vegetable lovers who do not yet have their own plot. An easy-to-care culture that does not require formation and is content with simple agricultural techniques will be able to surprise with a tasty and good harvest. Small, sweet tomatoes will always come in handy for a dinner and a festive table. The variety has practically no flaws in the cultivation process, so many vegetable growers have been growing it for more than one year. Moreover, you can always collect seed on your own. True, some gardeners complain about the loss of decorative qualities by the variety during the period of maximum yield of the crop, when most of the fruits are removed.

We have been raising these kids at home for the second year already. The plant really needs a large pot with a diameter of at least 20 - 25 cm. Otherwise, there will be less yield. One plant, planted in February 2018, still blooms and bears fruit. We have not seen such large brushes as in the photo. Maximum of 6 - 7 ovaries. Speaks really fast. Despite indoor conditions and lack of sun, the fruits are very sweet. The soil is obligatory with the addition of compost. No top dressing was done. We will experiment with new seedlings, we will add special fertilizing for tomatoes. Maybe the harvest will be bigger.
