Tomato variety Roma
Not every tomato variety has had the honor to gain popularity on most continents - in America, Australia, Europe. But the Roma tomato (Roma) received such recognition. And although in Russia it is not yet very famous, the gardeners who grew it appreciated the excellent qualities of this species. There is no exact information about the selection, but presumably, the variety was bred by American scientists. In our country, many fairly well-known companies are engaged in the distribution of seed material - Aelita, SeDeK, Udachnye Semyon. But many gardeners, going on vacation abroad, for example to Italy, bring seeds from there. The species is not included in the State Register, but according to available information, it is recommended for growing in open ground and under temporary film shelters, therefore it is perfectly cultivated in all regions of Russia.
Often the VF brand can be seen on the seed bags next to the name. Many people think that this is a new variety, but they are wrong. Roma VF is still the same variety, just the marking indicates its genetic resistance to Fusarium.
Description
The plant is of a determinant type, medium-sized, 60 - 80 cm high. The shoot-forming ability and leafiness of tomato are moderate. The internodes are short, which allows the plant to deliver nutrients directly to the emerging crop. Tomato-type leaves, long-stemmed, moderately corrugated, dark green. Outwardly, the plant looks powerful, but compact. On average, about 10 ovaries are formed in the Roma fruit cluster, but sometimes more fertile clusters grow. The peduncle of the variety has an articulation.
The fruits of the cylindrical plum-shaped shape, beloved by many housewives, slightly expanding towards the stalk, with a neat drawn-out nose, smooth. Unripe tomato is light green, ripe evenly turns into a rich red color. The skin is not thick, but very firm. Tomato pulp is fleshy, good density, moderately juicy, aromatic. As a rule, plum tomatoes have no more than 3 chambers with a small seed content. The taste is real tomato, harmoniously combining sourness and sweetness, the sugar content is increased. But reviews on taste vary somewhat - from very good to almost herbaceous. This is understandable, because our hero is not a real salad variety, this variety is excellent for canning. The weight of tomatoes is from 60 to 80 grams, but not more than 100 - 110 grams indoors.
Characteristics
- Roma ripening period is average. From the moment of emergence to the beginning of ripening, it takes from 105 to 125 days. This variation is due to the conditions of the regions and the way of cultivation;
- the crop ripens gradually, and therefore the fruiting period is extended. In the southern regions, picking tomatoes usually ends with the onset of a steady cold snap. According to reviews, with good care and a suitable climate, the culture can give out 3 - 4 waves of fruiting;
- unripe fruits will not disappear, they are perfectly ripened at home;
- data on yields from various sources, although they differ, show good figures in general. Usually, on bags with seeds, the yield is indicated from 6.0 to 8.0 kg per 1 square meter, but according to other sources this figure is close to 12.0 kg, and sometimes 15.0 kg per 1 square meter. meters;
- the immunity of the variety is very good - there is resistance to verticillium wilt and fusarium. According to reviews, Roma rarely gets sick or is exposed to pests;
- the species is not prone to cracking and rot, therefore, even if you do not harvest on time, the tomatoes will not lose their presentation;
- the plant is moderately resistant to temperature extremes, but it is especially praised for its ability to endure hot periods;
- transportability and keeping quality are excellent. This is greatly facilitated by the dense structure of the pulp and the relatively low weight of tomatoes;
- the way of eating the fruits is universal, for which the species is very much appreciated. Tomatoes are perfect for making salads, they are good in salting, whole-fruit canning, and are used in cooking. Also, Roma fruits are dried and frozen.
Agrotechnics
It is best to grow the variety in seedlings. It is advisable to determine the date of sowing tomatoes independently, taking into account the climatic features of the region. In the phase of 2 true leaves, the seedlings dive. Plants are planted in a permanent place at the age of 60 - 65 days. The best predecessors are cucumbers, zucchini, herbs, carrots. Planting density - up to 6 - 7 bushes per 1 square meter, or according to the scheme - 40 cm between plants and 50 cm row spacing.
A garter to the support is required, so many fruits are tied that even the most durable stem can lie down. It is recommended to form a plant before the appearance of the first fruit cluster. Some gardeners carry out moderate pinching and keep the Roma bush in 3 - 4 stems. In terms of care, the variety is very undemanding, but there are some nuances that need to be observed. Only well-lit places should be allocated for planting. During the flowering period, you can help the plant with pollination, for this you just need to shake the bushes slightly. The culture does not tolerate waterlogging, therefore, when making an irrigation schedule, take into account precipitation. A plentifully fruiting tomato requires good feeding, therefore, after transplanting, the plants are fertilized at least 3 times. Despite the resistance of the variety to diseases, preventive treatments are carried out with thickened plantings.
Roma is a versatile and unpretentious variety that is valued for its stable and high yield. During long-term transportation, the crop does not lose its presentation, and the culture is also indispensable for the preparation of pickles and preparations. Given the simplicity of agricultural technology, even an inexperienced tomato grower can cope with the cultivation of this variety. There were practically no obvious disadvantages, with the exception of taste, but this characteristic is rather subjective.
Roma black (Black Roma)
The seeds of R. black are on sale. This variety has nothing to do with our hero. Not listed in the State Register. It is distributed by little-known firms under the brand name "Author's Seeds". Fruits are plum-shaped, weighing 50 grams, dark red in color with a very dark, almost black tint. This tomato is declared as a very productive species (up to 7 kg per 1 square meter), resistant to fungal and viral diseases. There is very little information about him in various sources.
In addition, the seed material of the yellow-fruited Gold Roma species is found. But even less is known about this variety than about the chokeberry.
