Cherry variety Zhelannaya

In the foothills of Altai and Western Siberia, an amazing culture is widespread, which is called bush cherry, or steppe. It differs from an ordinary one by characteristics unusual for a culture - winter hardiness and drought resistance. Breeders have long used the resistant plant in the development of cherry varieties suitable for cultivation in adverse conditions. One of these was Desirable. It was created by Altai scientists by crossing a hybrid seedling of steppe and common cherries with Griot Ostheim. The authorship belongs to G.I.Subbotin and I.P. Kalinina. In 1982, an application was filed for registration of a new variety, and in 1990 it was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia with admission in all regions of the country. She proved herself excellently in the West Siberian region (Altai Territory and the Altai Republic). Applicant and originator - Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Federal Altai Scientific Center of Agrobiotechnics". Our heroine is often used in the selection of new varieties as a donor of fruit yield and taste.

Description

The plant is low, bushy, forming several trunks, with a height of 1.6 to 2.5 meters. Cherry crown of medium density, raised, wide. The bark is smooth, brown, with a grayish bloom, the lentils are small, grayish-white. Shoots drooping, not thick, with brown bark. The internodes are short. Buds are conical, with a blunt apex. The leaf blade is light green, medium in size, elongated. The surface of the sheet is smooth and flat. The apex of the lamina is short-pointed, the base is rounded-wedge-shaped, the serration of the edge is small, double-crenate. The petiole is green, without stipules, the glands are barely visible, white. During the flowering period, the plant is covered with inflorescences, consisting of 2 - 6 pink flowers of medium size. Corolla diameter 20 - 25 mm, oval-ovoid petals, 5 - 6 × 8 - 10 mm in size. Sepals are oval, 4 - 5 × 5 - 7 mm. The flower buds of the variety are light pink, the opened flower is white. The crop is formed mainly on annual shoots, less often on bouquet branches. The end of shoot growth occurs in the first decade of July. Leaf fall ends on December 2.

Zhelannaya's drupes are rather medium-sized, 14 mm high, 12 mm wide, weighing 3.4 - 3.7 grams. Cherry berries are aligned, rounded, slightly flattened. The skin is of medium thickness and density, glossy, dark red. The red-pink pulp has a pleasant dense texture, very juicy. The juice is colored red. The taste is sweet and sour, quite pleasant. 100 grams of raw pulp contains: dry matter 16%, sugars 10.6%, acids 0.26%, vitamin C 20 mg, vitamin P 165 mg. The peduncle is short, 25 - 30 mm long, 2.0 - 2.5 mm wide, firmly attached to the fruit. The stone is oval, small, weighing 0.16 grams. It separates from the pulp easily.

Characteristics

  • The early maturity of the variety is normal. After planting, fruiting begins at 4 - 5 years. The grafted plants begin to bear fruit a year earlier. The length of the productive period is very good. The tree bears fruit for almost 30 years;
  • in terms of ripening, the culture is medium late. The berries ripen by the end of July;
  • the yield for a low crop is good. The average figure is 6.7 kg per tree, under favorable conditions, our heroine can show a yield of 12 kg per plant;
  • in general, the winter hardiness of Zhelannaya is not bad, and for regions with a warm and temperate climate, it is completely excellent. The State Register describes this indicator as quite high. But in cold regions, these opportunities, especially in very cold winters, are not enough - the indicator of freezing of annual growths can reach 2 points, and the death of flower buds will be 30 - 40%;
  • on the other hand, for Siberia, an important and valuable quality can be the resistance of cherries to damping, due to which the root collar and the lower part of the stem do not suffer from a large amount of snow;
  • another undoubted plus of the variety is its excellent heat resistance, which allows the tree to withstand very high summer temperatures. In addition, the inherent drought tolerance of the crop minimizes losses during dry periods;
  • immunity is quite high, there is resistance to clasterosporiosis. But the weak link in this chain is insufficient resistance to coccomycosis;
  • transportability is average. Long-term transportation negatively affects the condition of the berries;
  • keeping quality is insufficient, the crop should be processed as soon as possible;
  • the way of using is universal. But, despite the fact that the berries can be consumed in their natural form, most housewives still prefer to use them for processing, especially since the preparations from this cherry are of high quality.

Pollinators

The desired partly self-fertile and without cross-pollination will be able to form only a small part of the possible yield - about 40%. Often, it is because of the lack of pollinators that our heroine is considered low-yielding. But if you plant Seliverstovskaya, Altai swallow, Maksimovskaya or Subbotinskaya next to it, not only the productivity of the variety will increase, but the quality of the berries will also become better.

Agrotechnics

Taking care of this cherry will not burden the gardener. Agrotechnology is standard for bushy crops. But the planting site must certainly be sunny, in the shade the variety almost does not bear fruit. If the winter is very cold and snowless, insulation will be required.

Zhelannaya is an excellent variety for unfavorable regions such as the Urals and Siberia. Damp-off resistance is especially appreciated in snowy places. The small size of the tree makes it easy to care for and easier to harvest. The culture is distinguished by a long period of productivity, good yield and taste. Our heroine can be grown not only in the garden, but also used for landscape design or as a hedge. The big drawback is the weak resistance to coccomycosis.
