Onda strawberry variety
Onda is a mid-late non-repairable variety of garden strawberries (strawberries) for universal use. Appeared on the market relatively recently, diversifying the collection of successful novelties of Italian selection. According to some reports, the variety was obtained by selecting the best plants of the variety Marmalade, which itself has gained quite a lot of popularity and good reviews. With such an origin, the novelty already initially promises to be promising, and indeed, many strawberry lovers are delighted with it. Plants give excellent and tasty yields, have good immunity, and also thrive in cool climates. Few Italians can show high yields in the northern latitudes, but our heroine is able to show her potential in such conditions.
The plant is medium-sized, medium-spreading. The foliage is good, the leaves are bright green. Usulation is moderate. Peduncles of medium length and thickness, with a large number of flowers. Plants form few peduncles, but this is compensated by the abundance of flowers. The flowers are medium-sized, white. Intense flowering, Onda is distinguished by good pollination.
The berries are large in size, have the correct rounded-conical shape, but in the total mass they do not differ in uniformity, especially during the beginning of strawberry fruiting. The largest specimens may have an irregular comb-like shape. The peel of the berries is red with an orange tint and an elegant glossy shine; at the stage of full ripeness, the fruits acquire a dark scarlet color, but such specimens lose their density and do not tolerate transportation well. The pulp is bright red, with a rather dense, but not firm consistency. The variety has a peculiarity - the largest berries have a green tip at the time of technical ripeness. Such fruits must be collected without waiting for the tip to redden, otherwise the berry will overripe and, as they say, turn sour.
The taste of the variety is very good. The berries combine sweetness and pleasant, unobtrusive sourness, the taste is very balanced. Some sources note that this variety is characterized by increased sugar content and low acidity, but not everyone agrees with this. The pulp has a delicate strawberry aroma of medium intensity. Onda boasts a good transportability of the harvest, the berries do not flow or wrinkle during transportation, and are also well stored. Strawberries are versatile in use, great for any kind of processing and freezing, excellent fresh, will be a good choice for decorating desserts.
The average weight of berries in the season ranges from 30-35 grams. The sizes of the fruits are heterogeneous throughout the fruiting period, therefore, at the first harvest, the weight of the berries will be at the level of 40-50 grams, then the harvest will be slightly smaller, but the variety does not sin with trifles - specimens weighing less than 30 grams will be rare. The variety has a fairly long and intense fruiting, and is also stable from season to season. However, it should be noted that this strawberry cannot boast of the uniformity of berries in the total mass throughout the entire fruiting period, therefore it has more established itself as a strawberry for growing in the garden. For commercial use, other new products of the Italian selection are more suitable. On the other hand, in the segment of mid-late varieties that can bear fruit well in cool climates, our heroine is far from the last place.
The yield of the variety is high, more than 1 kg of berries per plant. Of course, this is really a very high indicator, so strawberries will need a good level of agricultural background to achieve it. However, Onda is not particularly demanding on feeding and does not need scrupulous care, and also does not require a large number of treatments for diseases. The variety is not very well studied at the moment, so it is difficult to judge how highly productive it is in different climatic conditions. She is credited with good yields even in northern latitudes, but this remains to be verified. Perhaps, in a mild Italian climate, plants are really capable of producing more than 1 kg of berries from a bush, but this is hardly possible in conditions, for example, in the Urals, where strawberries simply will not have time to reveal their potential before the onset of frost.
Onda has excellent immunity, is resistant to anthracnose and diseases of the root system, does not require a large number of treatments, berries are rarely affected by gray rot. This Italian is recognized as winter-hardy and frost-resistant, but sources do not give specific figures. Therefore, it is still better to take care of a good shelter of plants for the winter. The variety has very good drought tolerance, it tolerates heat normally. The strawberry yield is very stable, which is a huge plus, the bushes are productive both in very hot and cold rainy seasons, the berries do not suffer from high humidity and are not baked in the sun.
In agricultural technology, strawberries are quite undemanding, they can grow on a variety of soil types. The variety is very responsive, will respond with an increase in productivity and an improvement in taste for feeding and painstaking care. Plants are resistant to negative natural phenomena, so even unstable watering is not able to greatly harm the yield of strawberries. The culture is quite light-requiring, but it is better to shade the bushes from the scorching sun. In general, the variety is very unpretentious and is suitable for beginners and gardeners who do not have the opportunity to pay much attention to planting. This Italian is intended for outdoor cultivation, although there is evidence that it can grow indoors as well. The area of potential distribution of this strawberry is quite extensive, starting from the southernmost regions of Ukraine and ending with the northern latitudes of Russia, however, the plants will feel most comfortable in a continental climate, close to their native Italian. The variety shows itself perfectly in the conditions of the Moscow region.
Onda is not a very popular variety at the moment. Along with other Italian novelties, it has remained a little in the shade, but you should pay attention to it. Among many other Italians, our heroine is distinguished by excellent taste, which does not cause a lot of controversy. Also, this strawberry has good winter hardiness and really stable fruiting. In short, they are unpretentious, high-yielding and delicious strawberries. Its shortcomings have not yet been identified, due to its recent appearance on the market.
