Apple variety Summer striped

Summer varieties of apple trees are not often planted in industrial gardens. But in almost every summer cottage or in a small private garden, you can find early varieties. They differ in great variety in color, taste, shape, but they have one thing in common - poor keeping quality. That is why the number of early maturing varieties of apple crops is often limited to one or two trees. Nevertheless, these apple trees are very popular and there are noteworthy centenarians among them. One of them is Summer striped. The authorship belongs to P.A. Zhavoronkov. Our hero was obtained by selection from seedlings of free pollination of a large-fruited apple tree of an unknown species. The variety was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia in 1965, but it was taken for state testing only in 1967. The applicant and originator is the Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The variety was zoned in the Ural region (Republic of Bashkortostan, Kurgan, Orenburg and Chelyabinsk regions). In the region of admission, it is still considered one of the best among the early ones. Also distributed in Belarus and Ukraine.

Description

The plant is distinguished by good vigor, the tree is standard, medium-sized or tall - from 4 to 6 meters. The crown is broadly round, slightly spreading, medium thickened. The bark on the skeletal branches and trunk is brown. Shoots are not thick, lighter than the stem and main branches. Lentils are light, slightly elongated. The leaves are large, elongated, with a short-pointed apex, dark green in color. The leaf blade is even, slightly pubescent. The surface is flat, matt. The edge is wavy, with finely crested serration, slightly raised upward. The petiole is short, slightly pubescent, uncolored. The flowers are white-pink, cupped, rather large. Column of pistils, not pubescent, of medium length. The stigma of the pistils is at the same level as the anthers. Fruit bearing type Summer striped mixed. The harvest is formed on all types of fruit wood, often the fruiting of an apple tree occurs on the growths of the last year.

The fruits of the variety are one-dimensional, of a beautiful round-conical shape, with a small wide ribbing. The skin is smooth and dry to the touch. The main color is greenish-white, the integumentary color appears as a red striped blush over the entire surface of the fruit. Wax plaque is present, but to a small extent. The funnel is small, sharp-conical, with traces of rusting. The saucer is of medium depth, often folded. The calyx is large, half open. The peduncle is oblique, of medium length and thickness. The size of the apples is below average, the weight is about 90 grams. The maximum weight is 120 grams. The pulp is white, fine-grained, juicy, tender, friable, with a pleasant aroma. The taste is very good, sweet and sour. In terms of taste, our hero is tastier and sweeter than the famous Moscow Grushovka. 100 grams of raw pulp contains: dry soluble substances 13.8%, sugars 10.0%, titratable acids 0.75%, ascorbic acid up to 16 grams.

Characteristics

• Our hero's early maturity is average. The trees enter the fruiting period 5 - 6 years after planting. Marketable apple harvest begins to give in 1 - 2 years after the beginning of fruiting;
• in terms of ripening, the variety belongs to the summer. The fruits of the Summer striped ripen at the end of July (simultaneously with the Summer Arcade) and are immediately ready for consumption;
• fruiting is stable, annual;
• the variety does not show a massive fall of ripe fruits, but, nevertheless, sometimes there is a partial shedding of apples that have not reached maturity;
• productivity is very high. According to VNIISPK, average long-term yields under normal conditions are more than 200 c / ha. Other sources specify that 70 - 80 kg can be removed from one adult tree;
• immunity, despite his advanced age, our hero is excellent.High resistance to scab is noted. Even in unfavorable epiphytic years, the level of damage did not exceed 2.0 points;
• VNIISPK notes the high winter hardiness of the apple tree. According to some reports, the tree can winter without damage at -41 ° C, but a further decrease in temperatures may result in the loss of part of the crop. After a short thaw, the plant can withstand temperatures as low as -35 ° C;
• transportability is not very high. Still, the insufficient density of apples affects. For this reason, harvesting should also be done with caution;
• the ability to store, like all fruits ripening in summer, is practically absent. Apples can be stored for about 2 weeks, then their taste and consumer qualities are reduced;
• fruit marketability is high. The highest grade makes up about 15 - 20% of apples, the first one includes 35 - 40%;
• the method of consumption is primarily in natural form. But part of the crop can be processed into baking stuffing, compote, jam.

Pollinators

According to some reports, the Summer striped needs pollinators. Therefore, in order for the variety to be able to show an excellent result, neighbors are needed, blooming with it at the same time. These include Kitayka cream, Prize, Miass. The sources do not mention the degree of self-fertility of culture.

Planting and leaving

It is best to plant apple tree seedlings in the spring, since in the fall in the Ural region it is difficult to calculate the timing of the autumn planting. Early planted trees will begin to grow and will not have time to prepare for winter; if planting is late, the root system does not have time to adapt. But despite this, our hero is very unpretentious. Loose nutritious soils, a sunny area and timely watering are quite suitable for him. By the way, mature trees do not need to be watered at all if the summer is cool and damp. But what must be done is to thin out the crown in the spring, saving the tree from thickening. A well-ventilated and well-lit canopy will help maintain a healthy crop. Fruits that receive more sunlight will be able to store more sugars. Care should be taken with nitrogen-containing fertilizers. They are applied only in early spring to help the plant grow green mass faster. Closer to autumn, it is best to provide the tree with a sufficient amount of potassium and phosphorus. These mineral fertilizers are necessary to prepare for the winter period.

Summer striped is still considered a respected variety and does not lose its relevance, despite its age. The apple tree is very fruitful, early, with high-quality marketable fruits that are good fresh and suitable for processing. In addition, the species is valued for its high ecological adaptability. But the early ripening culture is not without its drawbacks. It upsets the occurrence of shedding of unripe apples. And the harvested crop has a too short shelf life, so if the crop is plentiful, the housewives will have to try to process it as quickly as possible.
