Volkhov's honeysuckle variety
Volkhova is a mid-season honeysuckle variety bred by the Pavlovsk Experimental Station VIR (St. Petersburg, Russia).
The bushes are vigorous, tall (more than 2 meters), with a dense, squat, oval-shaped crown. Shoots are thick, straight, with sparse hairiness. Leaves are large, dense, rich dark green color.
The variety can be used in garden design.
Berries are of medium or slightly below average size (weighing 0.6 - 0.8 grams, in length - up to 1.7 cm), in shape - elongated-oval, with a blunt top. The skin is firm, medium in thickness, bluish-blue in color. The pulp has a very good sweet taste (almost without acid), moderately aromatic, with a delicate strawberry tinge. Tasting assessment of the taste of the variety - 4.7 points. A variety for universal use.
By chemical composition, the fruits contain: the sum of sugars (8.5%), acids (1.9%), vitamin C (56.3 mg / 100 g).
Volkhov's honeysuckle is self-infertile. It is recommended to use varieties as pollinators for it: Nymph, Azure, Pavlovskaya, Amphora, In memory of Gidzyuk.
Medium ripening variety: berries ripen from 17th to 22nd June. In the conditions of Moscow, ripening occurs 5 - 7 days later, in comparison with Moscow varieties of honeysuckle. The degree of crumbling of ripe berries is weak.
The yield indicators are good: from one bush you can collect from 1.5 to 2.5 kg of berries. On fertile, well-moistened soils, the yield can reach 3 kg / bush.
The variety is frost-hardy, tolerates sharp temperature changes in winter. Disease resistance is high. Leaves and tops of shoots may be slightly affected by pests.
The main advantages of Volkhov's honeysuckle: berries with a dessert taste, low crumbling, frost resistance.
Disadvantages: medium-sized berries, leaves and shoots may be slightly affected by pests.
