Clapp. Other names: Favorite, Favorite Clapp.

Since 1947, Klapp's Favorite has been on the State Variety Testing. In 1947, this pear was zoned in the North-West (Kaliningrad region), North Caucasian (Republics: Dagestan, Adygea, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkar, Karachay-Cherkess, Ingush, Chechen; as well as Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, Rostov Region ) and Nizhnevolzhsky (Astrakhan region and the Republic of Kalmykia) regions. It has become widespread in Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, numerous Baltic countries and Central Asia. The variety is recognized as one of the best summer pear varieties; ideal for production, home and farm gardening.

The trees are medium to vigorous. At a young age, pears are characterized by rapid growth rates and form a thin crown of a pyramidal shape. With age, the crown becomes sparse, slightly "weeping" (hanging branches) and acquires a wide-rounded shape. The main branches are quite thick, branching to a weak degree, when they leave the trunk, they form an angle of 45 degrees. The bark on the trunk is slightly flaky; on main branches with a smooth surface, brownish-gray in color. In general, wood is very fragile and fragile. Fruits are tied most often on ringlets, partly on fruit twigs. The average life span of trees is 50 - 55 years (according to some sources - up to 70 years).

Shoots are thick, long, straight, dark brown in color, with a purple tint; internodes are short. Lentils are numerous, gray in color. The leaves are medium in size, elliptical or oval-ovoid, with a narrowing towards the base, the tips are short-pointed, the edges are finely serrated. The surface of the leaf blade is leathery, with a glossy sheen, without pubescence, painted in a dark green color. Petioles are thin, long, glabrous, light green.

The flowers are rather large, slightly double, white, collected in inflorescences of 6 - 7 pieces. Flowering is long, occurs in medium terms.

Lyubimitsa Klapp's fruits are above medium and large in size (the weight of one pear can vary from 140 - 180 to 200 - 230 grams), and large fruits grow mainly on young trees; fruit shape - ovate-elongated (short-pear-shaped), with a large expansion towards the apex. The skin on the surface is tender, smooth, slightly bumpy. According to the main color, the fruits are yellowish-green, when fully ripe they are yellow, the integumentary color is noticeable on the illuminated side of the fruit in the form of a bright carmine blush. The subcutaneous points are small, numerous, and hardly noticeable. Rarely, a slight rustiness may be present on the fruits - at the base of the apex in the form of small specks. The peduncles are of medium length, medium or thick in thickness, slightly curved in shape, fleshy at the attachment point (with a thickening at the base). The funnel is very small or completely absent. Open cup. The saucer is small, narrow, with slightly wrinkled walls or completely smooth. The heart is of medium size, weakly expressed, broadly elliptical in shape. The seed chambers are of medium size and ovoid; the axial cavity is hollow.Seeds are small in size, well done, dark brown in color.

The pulp is white, very juicy, tender, melting, with a light aroma, very good sour-sweet (wine-sweet) taste (sweetness prevails). By chemical composition, the fruits contain: dry matter (13.7%), the amount of sugars (8.3%), titratable acids (0.4%), ascorbic acid (6.6 mg / 100 g), P-active catechins (39.4 mg / 100 g raw material). On a 5-point tasting scale, the taste of the variety is estimated at 4.6 - 4.8 points. The purpose of the fruits is universal: due to their excellent taste and beautiful appearance, they are used mainly fresh, but also suitable for canning, drying, etc. The resulting products are of good quality: dried fruits from ripe fruits and compotes are rated at 4 points. For canning for compotes, it is recommended to use pears at the initial stage of skin yellowing and pulp softening.

In the conditions of the Kuban, removable maturity occurs in the period from July 28 to August 8, in mountainous areas the ripening of fruits occurs a little later - in the 2nd decade of August. The total storage period for fruits does not exceed 10-15 days. It is important to note that immature fruits are firmly held on the branches, but when they are fully ripe, they are prone to shedding. In this regard, it is recommended to remove the fruits a little earlier - 10 days before the onset of their biological maturity. However, harvesting too early (as well as too late) does not in the best way affect the quality of the fruit. The transportability of the variety is quite good.

Klapp's favorite is considered to be self-fertile pears. The best pollinators can be varieties: summer - Williams, Ilyinka, Pana; from autumn - Forest Beauty, Bere Giffard, Bere Boek, Bere Bosk, Bere Ligel; from the winter - the Winter Deccan, Olivier de Serre, Saint Germain.

With regard to the choice of soil: the variety is generally unpretentious, however, earlier fruiting is observed in trees growing on light, fertile, well-moistened (but not too wet) soils. When planting, heavy clay, saline, poorly drained soils should be avoided. Also, the close occurrence of the pebble layer is not allowed. In dry years, the fruits can become smaller and severely damaged by the copperhead.

The early maturation of the Lyubimitsa Klappa variety is low: the fruiting period begins in trees usually 7-8 years after planting in the garden. However, the trees bear fruit generously and regularly. In the conditions of the central part of the Kuban, the average yield of 15 - 20-year-old trees is 150 - 180 c / ha, and in the foothill area, trees aged 24 - 26 years bring an average of 250 - 300 c / ha. The variety's compatibility with wild pear and quince is generally good, but it happens that trees do not take root on quince.

The indicators of winter hardiness and drought resistance of this pear are high (about the same or slightly lower than that of the Forest Beauty). So, in the nursery L.P. Simirenko 2 - 3-year-old trees withstood 30-degree frosts. In the harsh winters of 1938 - 1942. trees of this variety in the collection nursery at the Institute. I.V. Michurin survived after 35-degree frosts, although severe damage was observed. Scab resistance is rather weak (leaves are affected up to 1 - 1.5 points).

The main advantages of the Lyubimitsa Klapp pear are recognized: a high level of winter hardiness, high yields, rather large fruits with good taste, undemanding to soil conditions.

Significant disadvantages include: a short storage period for fruits, a tendency to shedding when the fruits are fully ripe, poor resistance to scab, self-infertility, tall trees.

The variety is often used in breeding work: with the participation of Lyubimitsa Klapp, about 20 new varieties were obtained, of which 5 have already been zoned. Among them: Nalchikskaya Kostyka, breeding NKZNIIGiPS (Bere Ardanpon x Lyubimitsa Klappa), Elegant Efimovka breeding VSTISP (Tonkovotka x Lyubimitsa Klappa), Tatyana breeding Rossoshanskaya ZPYaOS (Bere winter Michurina x Lyubimitsa Klappa), VNIISSkaya Klappa (Bere Zimitsa Klappa), Orlovskaya Klappa (Summer) , Severyanka bred by VNIIGiSPR ((Ussuriiskaya x Bere Ligel) x Lyubimitsa Klappa), etc.

I bought Klapp's Pet in the Botanical Garden. The taste does not match the description. The fruits hung until the end of October and did not sing. The taste is firm, sweet, like grass, tasteless. Disappointed.
