Pear variety Perun

Perun is a pear with fruits of late autumn ripening, bred at the Scientific Research Institute of Horticulture of Siberia named after V.I. M.A. Lisavenko (abbr. NIISS named after MA Lisavenko, Barnaul) through pollination of selected hybrid form No. 10 821 (Granddaughter x Bergamotnaya) with Winter Deccan. The authorship is assigned to a group of breeders: I.A. Puchkin, I.P. Kalinina, E.P. Karataeva and M.I. Borisenko. In 1994, Perun was sent to the State Variety Testing. In 1998, the variety was zoned in the West Siberian and East Siberian regions.

The trees are medium-sized, the crown is slightly spreading, not thickened, round in shape. Tying of fruit formations occurs mainly on simple and complex ringlets. Flowering takes place at a relatively late date.

Shoots are slightly arcuate, brown in color. Leaves are of medium size, broadly ovate, with almost even, solid edges (the serration is barely noticeable), painted in a dark green color. The leaf blade is concave, with a smooth surface.

The fruits of the Perun pear are medium and above average in size (one pear usually weighs in the range from 140 to 180 grams, or a little more), regular pear-shaped, unequal, asymmetrical, slightly bumpy. The skin is rather delicate, smooth, oily, with a glossy sheen. When removed, the fruits are colored green, during the period of consumer maturity, the main color of the fruits becomes golden yellow, on no more than half of the surface, a cover color appears in the form of an intense blurry-striped red blush. On the skin, it is quite easy to see numerous small subcutaneous dots of green color. The stalks are of medium length and curved. There is no funnel. The cup is half-open, non-falling. The sub-cup tube is short in length, saccular in shape. The saucer is wide, grooved, medium in depth. The heart is small, bulbous in shape. The seed chambers are medium in size, closed, membranous. Seeds are small in size, lanceolate, narrow in shape.

The pulp is white, fine-grained, oily, medium density, prickly, aromatic, not too juicy (slightly dry), good sweet and sour taste. By chemical composition, the fruits contain: the sum of sugars (12.9%), titratable acids (0.44%), tannins (58 mg / 100 g), ascorbic acid (5.8 mg / 100 g), P-active compounds (58 mg / 100 g). According to the purpose, the variety is universal, the fruits are suitable for fresh consumption, drying etc.

The period of removable maturity falls in mid-October. It is worth noting that the largest fruits (weighing about 180 grams or more) under unfavorable conditions (for example, in windy weather) may crumble prematurely, without gaining their intended taste. In the refrigerator, the fruits remain fresh until January.

At the time of fruiting, trees enter the 4 - 5 year after planting in the garden. Yields are regular but moderate. In the period from 1992 to 2000. the average yield of this pear in the gardens of Barnaul was 17.8 kg of fruits per tree (or 9.9 t / ha). The winter hardiness of the variety can be assessed only as satisfactory (below the level of the old Siberian Lukashovka varieties). In the most severe winters, trees freeze to a large extent. Resistance to fungal diseases is high.

The main advantages of the Perun pear include: rather large fruit size for the West Siberian region (above average), good commercial and consumer qualities of the fruit, high resistance to scab.

An insufficient level of winter hardiness for certain regions may become a significant disadvantage. There is no doubt about the reliability of the variety only in areas with a favorable microclimate.

I have a plot in Barnaul in the lowlands near the forest. Winter temperatures of 45 and even 49 degrees have never caused harm to this pear. The layer of snow at its trunk would not be more than 70 cm. In an abnormally cold winter, all the apple trees froze over - Perun did not suffer ... at all. I do not understand why this variety is considered moderately hardy. Today, pears are simply huge, individual fruits, I think, will be more than 250 grams. And what her taste! The pulp is oily, sweet - like the southern varieties. Reminds me of the Conference. A worthy variety. Practically not susceptible to sores.

This year I have planted two seedlings of this variety for the first time. I did not know that its winter hardiness was underestimated. All our gardeners advise to grow it in stanza, which is not very convenient.

Two pears "Perun", bear fruit for the third year, the fruits are exceptionally large, the largest last year weighed 520 grams. The more fruits on the tree, the smaller they are, but still, the average weight of the fruit is not less than 200 g. Ripen after harvesting, in a warm place, after 5-6 days of lying, a pleasant aroma appears. Good for compotes. We extract the core from a whole pear and put the zest of oranges there, then fill it with syrup, in a container depending on the size of the fruit. For simple consumption, for my taste, they lose to sweet and juicy varieties. Another drawback: after long-term storage, the pulp becomes tasteless, cotton-like.
