Cabbage variety Sugarloaf

Sugarloaf is a late-ripening variety of White cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. Capitata), bred by the specialists of the Sedek company (Moscow). In 2008 it was added to the state register of the Russian Federation for the West Siberian region (Altai Republic, Altai Territory, Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tomsk and Tyumen regions). Suitable for commercial production. The period from germination to technical ripeness is 140 - 150 days. The authorship is assigned to I.N. Dubinina, S.V. Dubinin and A.N. Lukyanenko.

The leaf rosette is raised, powerful, spreading, with a diameter of 80 cm. The height of the plant is 40 cm. The leaves are slightly bubbly, rounded, large, light gray-green in color, with a waxy bloom of higher than average intensity; the edge of the leaf is slightly wavy.

Heads of cabbage are leveled, rounded, partially covered, juicy, crunchy, whitish in the cut, sweet (sugar content is very high), high density - estimated at 4.1 points. The average weight of a head of cabbage is 2.5 - 3.5 kg, the maximum weight is 6.5 kg (Altai Territory). The outer stump is of medium length, the inner stump is short. Marketable yield is 398 - 551 c / ha, which is 60 - 110 c / ha higher than the standard varieties Kolobok and Crumont. The maximum yield recorded in the Altai Territory was 564 c / ha. The output of marketable products is 93%.

Sugarloaf is great for fresh consumption, pickling and pickling. It is advisable to harvest the crop after frosts (at least two days of night frosts) so that the cabbage gains sweets. If after harvesting this cabbage is bitter, then you need to wait a month or more so that it matures and becomes sweet. Eating and salting is also desirable a month after removal. When fried and in borscht, bitterness is not felt.

This cabbage is resistant to diseases such as fusarium, keela and bacteriosis. Heads of cabbage are suitable for long-term storage - if properly maintained, they are stored until spring - early summer (May - late June).

Advantages of the variety: good and excellent taste, unpretentiousness, stable yield, disease resistance, long-term storage.

Of the shortcomings of the Sugar Loaf, it is worth noting: the harshness of sauerkraut, the tendency to cracking, some gardeners complain about the seeds - in addition to the original seeds, there are seeds of other types of cabbage in the package.

I rarely grow this cabbage, and my mother generally tries to avoid planting it. I explain why: despite the fact that it sprouts well and is resistant to many diseases, it grows strongly in breadth in the beds, and there is little space in the garden now. So, if you have a small garden, then it is better to refrain. Although the heads of cabbage themselves are large and rather dense. Some heads of cabbage will not fit in the vegetable drawer in the refrigerator.

It is cleaned late, standing before the snow. During the summer, you need to water often and abundantly, and also save from aphids, she loves this variety very much. Wood ash does not save, I spray it with chemicals against aphids.

Very sweet and delicious stewed, fresh. It is stored in our cellar until spring, it only turns black a little, rotting a little.

This year I also tried to plant. Previously, there were no problems with germination, but this year I planted three times in a pack - only a couple of seeds emerged. What is the reason, I do not know. The seeds were, as always, from the Aelita-agro company.

I bought the seeds because the name was very attractive. And also the fact that the description indicated that the variety was created for cold regions - and I checked that this is a "quality mark". The germination is excellent! Which is a rarity for cabbage. It grows very quickly. Minus - she has inseparable friends in the form of caterpillars, which are difficult to cope with, but the tincture of calendula copes. Heads of cabbage are large and firm. Very sweet ones that grew in shade. But the "sunflower" is a little bit bitter. The soup from the Sugarloaf should be cooked / stewed longer - the leaves are harsh. But the main plus, like all Siberians, is a very long storage.
