Potato variety Tiras
Tiras is a Ukrainian potato variety (Solanum tuberosum) of early ripening for table purposes. Bred by specialists of the Polesie Experimental Station of the Institute of Potato Growing of the NAAS in the early 2000s. Differs in drought resistance, suitable for growing on any type of soil. It can give two harvests per season with competent agricultural technology.
The period from the appearance of full shoots to ripening is 70-80 days, the first digging can be carried out much earlier, approximately on the 40th day of the growing season.
Plants of medium height, abundantly leafy. The leaves are elongated, emerald in color, with jagged edges. The flowers are red-violet. Abundant flowering. The stolons are about 5-6 cm long.
Tiras has a well-developed root system, 9-12 very large tubers can form on one plant, the number can often be higher. The mass of commercial copies reaches 116-140 grams, sometimes more. The tubers have an oval elongated shape. The skin is pink in color, smooth to the touch. The pulp is white. The eyes are numerous, their depth is average.
The yield of the variety is quite high. On 40-45 days after full germination, it is possible to collect 210 centners of potatoes per hectare of area. At the end of the growing season, on days 70-80, it is possible to get 460 c / ha. Under favorable season conditions, on well-prepared fertile soils, the yield can be even higher. The yield of marketable tubers is very high, but often their size can be too large. Keeping quality is good - 93%.
Tiras has excellent taste, experts have estimated them at 4 points out of 5. The pulp is well boiled, the starch content in it is 10-14.5%. The tubers are suitable for preparing a variety of dishes, but they are not particularly suitable for salads and soups, as well as for frying. But the puree from them turns out to be excellent!
Our hero is distinguished by undemanding soil conditions, thanks to which he can be grown in many regions of Russia and Ukraine. Even on soils poor in nutrient and mineral composition, it can give a fairly large amount of yield. Also, this potato is drought-resistant, capable of showing good results in the hottest seasons, while other varieties do not withstand such weather conditions. In agricultural technology, plants are simple, do not require special care, but there are some nuances, observing which you can achieve better yields.
- Sprouting tubers before planting is highly recommended. This will improve the germination of the seed, as well as accelerate ripening. By the way, the pronounced dormant period of tubers plays another important role - they are perfectly stored for about a year, without germinating.
- Planting is carried out when the soil warms up to at least + 6 ° C. Return frosts will have a bad effect on plants, so there is no need to rush to planting.
- The tubers are planted at a distance of about 30–35 cm from each other, the width between the rows should be 65–70 cm. The planting depth is standard for a particular type of soil.
- Basic farming practices are essential to get the best potato yields. This is weeding, and hilling, and loosening of the soil, as well as watering and feeding. Although Tiras is undemanding to soil fertility, it still responds well to additional fertilization.
- It is necessary to carry out timely preventive treatment of plantings from pests and especially diseases. It is also important to observe the crop rotation on the site.
The variety has an average resistance to late blight in tops and tubers, leaf-rolling virus. It is highly resistant to common scab (according to some reports, it can still be affected by it in unfavorable seasons), cancer, and various nematodes.
Our hero fell in love with gardeners not only in their homeland, but also abroad. The excellent presentation of tubers is very much appreciated, someone even says that Tiras is one of the best varieties for growing for the purpose of sale. Also in the list of advantages are excellent taste, early amicable ripening, unpretentious care and undemanding to growing conditions, good keeping quality, resistance to various diseases of potatoes.
High yield should be noted as a separate item. According to gardeners, at least 12 tubers are stably formed in one nest, moreover, often very large in size, with a mass of more than 150 grams.
There were no obvious flaws in the variety. However, there is controversy over its taste. Someone speaks of them with admiration, and someone vice versa. Some gardeners refuse to grow Tiras in favor of other varieties that are more delicious in their opinion. Well, among these extremes it is difficult to single out the "golden mean", therefore, to understand which of the arguing rights, you can only evaluate the potatoes, so to speak, to your taste.
