Vega potato variety

Vega is a German early maturing potato variety (Solanum tuberosum) for table use. Bred by the specialists of Norika Nordring-kartofelzucht-und Vermehrungs-GmbH. In 2013 it was registered in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation. Approved for cultivation in the Central region of Russia (Bryansk, Tula, Smolensk, Vladimir, Ivanovsk, Ryazan, Moscow, Kaluga regions). Differs in a beautiful marketable type of tubers, resistance to late blight. It tolerates drought and light frosts. Suitable for mechanical cleaning.

The period from the emergence of full shoots to harvest takes 50-65 days, the first digging can be done on the 45th day of the potato growing season.

The plant is medium in height, of an intermediate type. Stems are semi-erect or erect. Leaves are medium or large, green in color. At the edges of the leaf plate, waviness of medium or low intensity is noticeable. Flowers are white. The corolla is large, with a very weak anthocyanin coloration on the inner side, or even without it.

In one nest of Vega, 8-10 uniform homogeneous tubers are formed, the marketable ones have a mass of 87-120 grams. The tubers of the variety are oval regular in shape, with a flat surface without bumps and depressions, they look very attractive. The peel is yellow in color, has a mesh structure, smooth to the touch. The flesh on the cut is dark yellow. Eyes from very small to small, shallow, practically invisible.

The marketable yield of the variety, according to the results of state tests, is noted in the range of 229-377 c / ha, which is 82-84 c / ha higher than the indicators of Pushkinets and Dolphin... At the first digging, on the 45th day of potato growing season, it is possible to get 81-143 kg / ha, which is comparable to the standard Zhukovsky early... At the second digging, on the 55th day after full germination, 109−187 c / ha were obtained, at the level of the established standards. The maximum amount was collected in the Tula region - 484 centners of tubers per hectare of area, 244 centners / ha more than the results of Zhukovsky early. Thus, our hero with full confidence can be called one of the highest-yielding varieties of early ripening. Marketability 87−95%. Keeping quality is excellent - 99%.

Vega tastes excellent. It is classified as culinary type B (according to the EAPR classification - the European Association for Potato Research), the tubers have an average digestibility, and are universal in the kitchen. Best for frying, boiling, baking, soups and salads, and vegetable mixes. Yes, and for mashed potatoes, they are also suitable, but it will turn out not to be as tender and airy as from more boiled varieties. The pulp does not darken during cutting and heat treatment, the starch content in it is noted at the level of 10.1-15.9%. According to some sources, our hero is great for dietary and baby food.

Plants are moderately demanding on soil fertility and climate; they feel better in regions with mild weather conditions, on loose soils, rich in nutrient and mineral composition. The peculiarity of the variety is drought resistance, which makes it suitable for cultivation in southern areas with hot summers. However, plants are insensitive to light frosts, which makes it possible to successfully grow potatoes in more northern regions. In a word, our hero can grow almost throughout Russia and show very impressive results, with proper care, of course.

Vega responds well to increased attention. Timely hilling, loosening the soil, weeding, preventive measures to combat diseases and pests, as well as watering and fertilizing - all this will have a very positive effect on the quantity and quality of the crop. There are also some features of agricultural technology, which we will discuss in more detail in the list below.

  • Tuber crops have a pronounced dormant period, so they must be germinated before planting. This will promote better germination as well as accelerate ripening.
  • Experts recommend regular watering during the flowering of potatoes, however, do not allow moisture to stagnate in the soil - the variety does not tolerate this very well.
  • Vega feels great in very hot seasons, but you shouldn't forget about watering and, if necessary, shading the area. Mulching the ridges can be an effective method - it will help to avoid severe drying out of the soil, and at the same time it will eliminate the need for weeding.

Plants are resistant to rhizoctonia, golden cyst nematode, cancer causative agent, black leg, Y virus. Moderately susceptible to leaf roll virus and common scab. According to the originator, they are highly resistant to late blight.

Our hero has proven himself very well both in the production areas of large enterprises and in small areas of gardeners. Many people note its unpretentiousness to growing conditions, thanks to which it can be grown in various regions of Russia and beyond. The high yield of the variety, the excellent presentation of the tubers, good taste, and resistance to many potato diseases are especially appreciated.

A separate point should be noted the excellent keeping quality of Vega. The tubers are stored for more than a year without losing their excellent presentation and good taste. They are not prone to germination, therefore, even with minor violations of the temperature regime in the storage, the crop will not lose its qualities. The tubers are also highly resistant to mechanical damage, do not darken from impacts, making them suitable for mechanical harvesting and transportation over long distances.

Among the shortcomings, we can mention the sensitivity to waterlogging of the soil, as well as the moderate demanding potatoes for soil fertility. However, with proper farming techniques, these problems will not be a problem.
