Cucumber variety Kid

An immutable truth of every gardener - the right variety is half the success. Especially carefully you need to select plants for open ground with its unpredictability, where temperature drops, heavy rainfall or, conversely, drought often occur. Many breeders are engaged in the creation of crops that would have improved qualities. And whether the new variety will become popular is up to vegetable growers. Among the cucumber species that have really gained recognition is the Kid. It was declared back in 1991 by the Volgograd Experimental Station VNIIR im. Vavilov Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The author is V.A. Shefatov. The cucumber was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia in 1994 with a permit for the Lower Volga region (Republic of Kalmykia, Astrakhan, Volgograd and Saratov regions). It is recommended for cultivation in the open field, but if necessary, it can also be grown under a film cover.

Description

The plant is bushy, compact, with weak branching, side shoots are short. From a distance, it resembles a miniature squash bush. The length of the central stem is about 40 cm. The internodes are short. The foliage is weak. The leaves of the Kid are slightly dissected, pentagonal-rounded, slightly wrinkled, dark green in color. In each leaf node of a cucumber, 2 - 3 oval ovaries are formed.

The fruits of the variety are elliptical, small, gherkin type, rounded-triangular, 9.0 - 9.5 cm long (but not more than 10 - 11 cm), 2.7 - 3.5 cm in cross section. Skin is soft, elastic , medium density. The color is dark green, with light stripes reaching ½ - 1/3 of the length of the fruit. The surface is large tubercles, the location of the tubercles is sparse, the pubescence is light. The pulp of excellent consistency is quite dense, crispy, tender, without voids and bitterness, fragrant. The taste of our hero is very much appreciated; many vegetable growers call cucumbers one of the most delicious. The taste is sweet and refreshing. The seeds are small. The mass of cucumbers is from 80 to 115 grams.

Characteristics

  • The kid belongs to the early maturing species. After the emergence of full shoots, 41 - 43 days pass before the beginning of fruiting, which in open ground conditions is a good indicator;
  • information on the yield is very different. For example, on a packet of seeds from the company "Gavrish" data on 3.4 - 3.9 kg per plant are indicated. In other sources, the same figure is given as the yield per square meter. "Lucky seeds" provide information about 1.3 - 2.6 kg per 1 square meter. There is no data on this indicator in the State Register of Varieties. Gardeners in the reviews call the yield consistently average, and this statement is most likely closer to the truth;
  • the bush variety, due to the early ripening and amicable return of the harvest, will require the gardener to collect ripe cucumbers often every 2 to 3 days. If the greenery is overripe, its skin will become thick and rough;
  • the immunity of the varietal plant is quite high. Our hero can perfectly resist downy mildew and cucumber mosaic virus;
  • open field conditions require excellent adaptability from the Kid, and it really is. Vegetable growers have repeatedly noted the excellent resistance of the variety to changes in weather conditions;
  • the variety belongs to bee-pollinated. This characteristic is a big plus, since the pollinated varieties are famous for their taste and a high content of biologically active substances and vitamins;
  • the plant is very shade-tolerant, it can be planted even in diffused shade;
  • transportability is good, keeping quality too;
  • the way of use is universal. Crispy and tasty cucumbers are used with pleasure in salads, eaten in their natural form. Zelents are also ideal for pickling and canning.

Agrotechnics

You can grow the Kid by direct sowing of seeds into the soil and by seedling. The second method is considered the most popular, due to the ability to get a crop a little earlier than the due date.Seeds are sown directly into the ground in early June. Seedlings are sown in mid or late April. Seedlings are transplanted into the ground when at least 3 true leaves appear on them. Planting pattern: 40 cm between bushes, 40 cm row spacing. The bushy shape and small size of the plant make it easy to care for. After all, you do not need to tie it up on a trellis, a simple support in the form of a wooden stake is enough. And you can do without it at all. It is also not necessary to form a plant. Agricultural technology is simple, but the variety needs a sufficient amount of moisture and additional fertilizing. Compliance with crop rotation and preventive treatments (you can use folk remedies) will increase the immunity of the plant. Due to its compactness and early maturity, you can grow this cucumber on balconies and loggias. Success in this case will also depend on good watering and timely feeding.

The kid, of course, has both strengths and weaknesses. The gardeners liked him first of all for the opportunity to get an early harvest of a varietal cucumber, famous for its excellent taste and aroma. The fruits are equally good both fresh and canned. Agricultural technology also has its pros and cons. Due to the compactness of the plant, it is much easier to care for it than for an indent. But the culture is demanding for watering, and top dressing should not be missed. A nice bonus is the ability to collect seeds yourself.

Kid (F1)

Not so long ago, a hybrid with the same name appeared. It was created by Belarusian breeders. The variety was included in the State Register of Belarus in 2006. The belonging of the cucumber to hybrids is confirmed by the presence of the F1 marking.

Description

The plant is indeterminate, medium-sized, climbing. Leaves are green, medium-sized, pentagonal-rounded, with irregularly serrate edges and a wrinkled surface. Leaf length 15 cm, width 12 cm. Flowers are predominantly female. In the leaf sinus, from 3 to 6 ovaries are formed. The ovary is round-oval, tuberous, covered with dense dark pubescence. Zelentsy gherkin type, shortened-ellipsoid, without a neck, with a blunt base. The color is green, with longitudinal blurred stripes from top to bottom. The surface is large lumpy, with a sparse arrangement of tubercles. Cucumbers reach 8 - 10 cm in length, in diameter - 3.0 - 3.3 cm. The mass of zelents is 60 - 80 grams. Cucumbers have excellent taste.

Variety characteristics

  • The Malysh hybrid also belongs to the early maturing, the period from the emergence of full shoots to the beginning of fruiting takes 45 - 50 days;
  • the fruiting period lasts until September;
  • marketable yield - 30.0 - 35.0 t / ha;
  • has increased resistance to major diseases of culture. Especially resistant to keel, phomosis, vascular bacteriosis;
  • refers to bee-pollinated;
  • transportability and keeping quality are good;
  • the way of use is universal. Cucumbers are good fresh, great for canning. Tasting assessment of salted fruits of this variety on a 5-point system - 4.9 points.

Agrotechnics

Hybrid Kid is also recommended to grow in seedlings. Sowing for seedlings is carried out in March - April. But you can apply direct sowing of seeds in the ground, it is carried out in June. Planting scheme: 20 cm x 50 cm. After transplanting the seedlings to a permanent place, the plant is tied to a trellis. Agricultural technology consists of standard procedures, so it does not differ in nuances.
