Cucumber variety Mels (F1)
Bunch cucumbers have recently become the property of gardeners, but the interest in them is simply huge. No wonder, because the originators describe the characteristics of the varieties only with the prefix "super". The well-known series "Magnificent Five" from "Uralsky Dachnik" includes a variety called Mels. It is interesting that during the formation of Soviet power, mothers gave their sons the name Mels, which was formed from the initial letters, they guessed, of course - Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin. What a coincidence. But let's continue. The novelty belongs to hybrids, therefore it is marked with F1. It is not included in the State Register, but they are trying to cultivate it in all regions of Russia, both outdoors and indoors. Someone succeeds, someone does not. In order for further experiments of amateurs to be crowned with success, we will try to understand the peculiarities of cultivation and characteristics of this species.
Description
The plant is declared as vigorous, with good shoot-forming ability, moderately leafy. Cucumber leaves are large, long-petiolate, angular-heart-shaped, arranged alternately. In each leaf node, 5 - 7 ovaries are formed. And in just a season, the originators promise up to 400 zelents from a bush. Gherkin type fruits, about 10 cm long, elegant, bright green color. The skin is not thick, covered with medium-sized tubercles with frequent, but not prickly pubescence, white spines. The pulp is dense, tender, without voids and bitterness, crispy, very aromatic. Mels' taste is excellent.
Characteristics
- The originators call the ripening period of the variety super early, because from the moment of full sprouting to the beginning of fruiting, only 36 days pass. True, many gardeners cannot beat this record, their harvest is late for at least a week;
- the declared yield of cucumber may also seem to be a record - 40 kg per 1 square meter per season. There are also disputes around this indicator, some argue that cucumbers are really "a whole sea", others - as they say, "the cat cried";
- immunity is excellent, which is what almost all hybrids are famous for. Mels is highly resistant to tobacco mosaic virus, common cucumber mosaic virus, olive spot, and downy mildew tolerant;
- the variety is self-pollinated, which means it will perfectly tie the crop even in greenhouses;
- transportability of Zelentov is good, as well as keeping quality;
- the way of use is universal. Cucumbers are good in their natural form, in salads, and the salting qualities of zelents are also praised.
Agrotechnics
Many of those who grew the Mels hybrid were unhappy with the result. The secret of success lies in the implementation of the rules of agricultural technology. It is only necessary to grow a super-yielding cucumber in a seedling way. Sowing time depends on the climate of the region, but usually seeds are sown in late March - early April. Seedling care is standard for the culture as a whole. When transplanting to a permanent place, the distance between the plants should be observed - 70 × 70 cm. The thickening of the plantings reduces the yield. The variety is very demanding for watering and fertilizing. Watering should be done frequently, but not excessively, keeping the soil in a moderately moist state. During flowering, the plant needs nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. During the fruiting period, organic or balanced mineral complexes can be used. Form a cucumber bush into one stem. To do this, in the three lower leaf nodes, the inflorescences are removed, and in the process of growth, the emerging shoots are pinched. Do not forget that at the beginning of the transplant, the stem must be tied to a vertical trellis.And most importantly, when the fruits begin to ripen, they will have to be harvested often - every day. Otherwise, ripe greens will take food from the rest of the ovary. Depending on the region, cultivation can take place in open or closed ground.
When growing Mels, you will have to make an effort; without your help, the workaholic simply cannot fully reveal his potential. Of course, this cucumber is not for those gardeners who come to their dachas only for the weekend, in this case, in the absence of watering and harvesting, the entire effect disappears. Well, the efforts made will pay off a hundred times with an excellent harvest, and the variety will confirm all its super qualities. True, the seeds will have to be purchased every season.
