Rose Coco Loko (Koko Loko)

Koko Loko is an American variety of Floribunda roses. Bred by Christian Bedard in the United States in 2008. The registration name is 'Wekbijou'. It is obtained by crossing the 'Blueberry' floribunda with the 'Pot O'Gold' hybrid tea rose. Introduced in America by Weeks Wholesale Rose Grower in 2012. Also found under the synonym name 'Soul Sister'.

The bush is well leafy, erect, reaches a height of 75 - 90 cm, width - 50 - 70 cm. The shoots are strong, with thorns. The leaves are green, semi-glossy.

The flowers are large, 9 - 11 cm in diameter, contain about 40 petals. They grow one at a time or are collected in a brush up to three buds. The shape of roses changes during flowering from a conical bud to a goblet. The unopened bud is the color of milk chocolate. An open coffee-with-milk rose with lavender hues. Flowers with a light sweetish aroma.

It is recommended to plant Coco Loko in areas that are well lit in the morning, when there is intense evaporation from the leaves, which reduces the risk of fungal diseases. Preference is given to soils that are easily permeable to air and moisture, with a sufficient humus content. The groundwater level should be no higher than 75 - 100 cm from the soil surface, since the root system of roses penetrates to a depth of 1 meter.

This variety blooms throughout the summer season, changing color from chocolate to coffee-lavender.

Resistance to powdery mildew is high, and medium to black spot.

Unfortunately, this variety cannot boast of good frost resistance. Its frost resistance, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), corresponds to only zone 7a (minus 15 - 17 ° C). In Russia, this zone roughly corresponds to the territory north of Sukhumi to Tuapse.

Of course, such a delicate rose must be covered for the winter. Before this procedure, the shoots are first pruned (up to 30 cm above the ground) and the topsoil is loosened to provide air access to the roots. In the spring, you need to carry out sanitary pruning, top dressing and preventive spraying.

Rose Coco Loco

Advantages of the variety: unique color of flowers, roses do not fade and are resistant to rain.

The disadvantages include: low frost resistance, insufficient resistance to black spot.

Coco Loco is an unusual, sophisticated, latte-like rose with tones of chocolate, coffee and lavender. It is good for both single planting and landscape compositions. It pairs well with ‘Novalis’, ‘Lavender Pinocchio’, ‘Ann Henderson’, ‘Paul Rikard’ and ‘Cafe’. They all bloom at about the same time, complement each other in color and flower shape. The purity of pink tones and the small size of flowers in ‘Poesie’ and ‘Paul Noel’ emphasize the unusual coloration of ‘Koko Loko’ beige roses. You can play around with grayscale hues using varieties such as 'Honey Dijon', 'Creme Caramel', 'Amnesia', 'Mokarosa', 'Julia's Rose', 'Distant Drums' and 'Patience'. You can also highlight the beauty of this unique floribunda with lilac-pink hues of varieties such as 'Love Song', 'Novalis', 'Deutsche Welle', 'Ametista', sage and lavender. Such exquisite compositions will be a charming decoration for your garden.

This variety immediately attracts attention - you cannot pass by and not stop! And when you stop, you will also feel a delicate aroma. I was very happy when I managed to acquire a seedling, but I was not happy for long - all the pests that are on the rose are attacked by both powdery mildew and black spot indiscriminately (even constant treatments do not help), which is probably why it grows poorly. And the color ... when I looked at the solo rose, the color seemed very pleasant and seductive, and when it blooms surrounded by other colors and colors, the color seems faded and strange. The rose, weakened by diseases and pests, did not survive its second winter, which I do not regret - I will not buy any more.
