Rose Wow (Wow)

The creative nature loves everything unusual. If such a person is engaged in floriculture, he also selects plants for his garden in accordance with the criterion of a non-standard appearance. In his collection there must be a Wow rose - the owner of delicate buds with a very original color.

History of origin

We are talking about a hybrid tea variety, bred in 2007 in the Netherlands. This is the fruit of the labors of breeders who are employees of the oldest Dutch florist company De Ruiter Innovations BV. The company has been operating since 1913. The main areas of its activity: selection, cultivation and sale of varietal plants intended for cultivation both in open ground and in containers. In addition to roses, the company is also engaged in the production of rose hips and St. John's wort.

The appearance of the variety turned out to be unexpected for the breeders themselves. However, he surpassed all their expectations, and therefore was named the English word "wow", which translates literally "wow!". At first, the culture received rave reviews from florists, then from specialists in the field of landscape design, and then florists and gardeners joined the ranks of its fans. Registration name of the flower: RUIy5451.

Description of the variety

Wow is a meter-long, quite compact bush, growing in width by a maximum of 70 cm. Rare specimens are more impressive in size. This decorative perennial was formed with long, erect shoots, equipped with thorny thorns. Thanks to them, the crown keeps its shape and does not disintegrate during the flowering period. The numerous leaves of the plant are large, dark green, with a pronounced glossy sheen.

Rose inflorescences are simply incomparable. The subject of admiration is their divinely beautiful pink-orange color, which is dominated by salmon, fiery, rich orange or warm coral shades. I would like to call other flowers ruddy. On one bush there may be buds that differ slightly from each other in color. Before opening, their shape is classic goblet. The blossoming flowers are rather large - from 12 to 15 cm in diameter, with a high center. Each Wow inflorescence consists of 18-27 smooth, slightly pointed petals. The flowers that appear on the plant are mostly single, but they are also collected in a brush of 2-4 buds. Their pleasant, delicate aroma, discernible only when being in the immediate vicinity of the rose, is characterized by the presence of faint notes of verbena, ginger and even nutmeg. Wow blooms continuously throughout the season, namely from late spring to September. Fading buds are immediately replaced by new ones.

Large-flowered tea hybrid tolerates severe frosts well. Its flowers are very resistant to rain, although the attractive color of the delicate petals can be damaged by the appearance of darker specks on their surface. The risk of developing fungal diseases and attacks on the culture of pests is quite low.

Agrotechnical features

For Wow planting, select a spot where the shrub will be exposed to ambient light for most of the day. The influence of direct sunlight is permissible only in the afternoon. Perennials must be protected from cold drafts. Wow has no particular complaints about the soil. But, if you want to maintain the decorative appearance of the rose, it is worth planting it in a fertile, moderately moist soil with a slightly acidic reaction.

Caring for a bright beauty must be approached with all responsibility. It should be a set of measures aimed at good growth, development and, accordingly, flowering of a perennial. These include:

  • Watering. This procedure is recommended to be carried out weekly, more often on hot days. Water is used previously settled, slightly warmed up in the sun.
  • Loosening the soil under the flower. It is performed a day after watering in order to increase the flow of oxygen in the air to the root system of the rose.
  • Top dressing. This event begins to be produced from the second year of the life of Wow. In the spring, Wow needs nitrogen fertilization for the development of foliage and stems. In the phase of bud formation, a mineral complex is introduced under the bush. Closer to autumn, the flower is fertilized with phosphorus-potassium concentrate so that it overwinters better.
  • Pruning. It is also obligatory for the plant in spring and summer. In the first case, the procedure concerns sick and dead shoots, in the second, it consists in a banal trimming of the crown. In autumn, all the shoots of the shrub are shortened, preparing the rose, thus, for the cold weather.
  • Preventive treatment with fungicides and insecticides. This is done to minimize the likelihood of diseases and insects on the bush.

Use cases

Wow is an ornamental variety designed specifically to create a unique flower garden, park or garden design. The amazing rose will become a living diamond of any rosary. It is planted both as a single bush and in flower beds. Plants of this variety can be placed in the foreground or along the perimeter of the site. They look beautiful in group plantings with such ornamental shrubs as Thunberg barberry, bubblegum, black elderberry, due to the fact that the maroon foliage of these crops creates a spectacular background for the pink-orange inflorescences of the noble perennial. In addition, plants with openwork foliage can make a worthy company to our heroine. When cut, Wow retains the amazing appearance of inflorescences for up to two weeks.
