Cherry variety Novella
Novella is a cherry of medium ripening, bred at the All-Russian Research Institute of Breeding of Fruit Crops (Orel) through crossing the Rossoshanskaya variety with the coccomycosis resistance donor Vozrozhdenie 1 (obtained on the basis of Maak cherry). The authorship is assigned to a group of breeders: A.F. Kolesnikova, E.N. Dzhigadlo, A.A. Gulyaeva and O.D. Golyaeva. Since 2001, the variety has been included in the State Register for the Central Black Earth Region.
Trees of medium vigor (up to 3 meters high), with a raised, spreading, rounded crown. The bark on the trunk and the main skeletal branches is brown. Buds are small (0.4 cm), ovoid, slightly deviated from the shoot. Shoots are not pubescent, straight, brown-brown in color. The leaves are obovate, with a pointed tip and a sharp base; a double-serrated serration runs along the edge of the leaf. The leaf blade is dark green, elastic, flat in shape, with a matte surface. The petioles are 2.9 cm long, the surface is anthocyanin-colored. Glands of 2 pieces: located one at the base of the leaf and on the petiole.
Inflorescences are four-flowered. The petals are white, located freely. The rim is open, flat in shape. The calyx is narrow-calcareous, sepals without serration. The stigma of the pistil is at the same height as the anthers. The blade is 6.7 mm long, the stamens are 6.8 mm long. Fruit ovaries are formed on bouquet branches and last year's growths.
Novella cherry fruits are above average size (weight 4.5-5 grams, height - 1.7 cm, width - 1.8 cm, thickness - 1.4 cm), one-dimensional, wide-rounded in shape, slightly dull, the top is slightly depressed , the funnel is shallow. The skin of the ripe fruit is maroon, almost black. Peduncles up to 3.7 - 4 cm long, of medium thickness. The seeds are yellow, weighing 0.15 g (5.5% of the total weight of the fruit), rounded, with a pointed tip and a rounded base. The separability from the pulp is very good. The separation from the peduncle is average.
The pulp is dark red, medium density, juicy, good sour-sweet taste. Tasting assessment of the taste of fresh berries - 4.2 points. In terms of chemical composition, the berries contain: dry soluble substances (14 - 14.9%), the amount of sugars (11.4%), acids (1.8%). The purpose of the variety is universal, but it is better to use the fruits for processing. The transportation of the berries is well tolerated.
Flowering and ripening of this cherry takes place in the middle period: from 10 to 18 May and from 15 to 20 July, respectively. The ripening process is simultaneous, not extended in time. In wet years, the fruits do not crack. Early maturity is good: trees begin to bear fruit in the 3rd - 4th year. But fruiting is very unstable: in one year you can get a very high yield, in the next - negligible.
The productivity of the variety is high. The average yield is about 15 kg / der. or 77.6 c / ha, the maximum yield reaches 99.8 c / ha. If agrotechnical standards are observed, the durability of trees increases markedly.
The level of winter hardiness of trees is high, the winter hardiness of flower buds is assessed as average. Resistance to coccomycosis is high; plants are weakly affected by moniliosis.
The variety is partially self-fertile. To obtain bountiful harvests nearby, it is recommended to plant varieties: Vladimirskaya, Griot Ostheim, Chocolate girl.
The main advantages of Novella cherries include: outwardly attractive fruits with good taste, high productivity, and immunity to fungal diseases.
The disadvantages of the variety include only the average level of winter hardiness of flower buds.
