Cherry variety Ural Ruby

Cherries can bear fruit not only in the south, but also in cooler regions. To do this, you just need to choose the right variety. For example, for the Volga-Vyatka, Ural and West Siberian regions, a variety has been adapted, called the Ural ruby. It was created in 1954 by selecting plants from seedlings obtained from free pollination of Michurin varieties, and crossing them with the local Ideal species. Applicant - Sverdlovsk breeding station, authors - N.I. Gvozdyukova and S.V. Zhukov.

Description

This variety belongs to the steppe, or shrub cherry, so the height of the bush is small - 1.5 - 1.8 meters. It is very rare for plants to exceed the 2 meter threshold. The outstretched branches form a thin, but strongly leafy, wide, rounded crown. Over time, it can take on a weeping form. The bark is dark gray, on young branches it has a brownish tint. The leaf plate is obovate, with a pointed apex and a wedge-shaped base. There is a double-gable serration along the edge. Young leaves of Ural Rubinovaya are bright, emerald green in color. The old ones are green, with a slightly glossy surface, curved, resembling a boat. On the petiole and base of the leaf, 2 to 4 glands can be located. The petiole is light green, not long, only 1 cm, 1 mm thick. Cherry inflorescence consists of 2 - 3 small white flowers. The open corolla is slightly less than 2 cm in diameter. The stigma of the pistil rises above the anthers. The length of the pistil is 1.2 cm, the length of the stamens is 0.6 cm. The cup is glass-shaped, with strongly serrated sepals. The variety bears fruit mainly on annual growths and bouquet branches. Buds are conical, small - 3.7 mm. They are weakly rejected from the escape.

Fruits are small, with an average weight of 3.5 grams, with good care, the weight can increase to 4 - 5 grams. They are rounded in shape, with a rounded top and a medium funnel. The skin is shiny, dark red. The pulp is medium-dense, with light streaks, red, juicy. The taste is satisfactory, sweet and sour. Assessment of tasters - from 3 to 4.5 points. The long (3.6 cm) stalk is firmly attached to the fruit, but the separation is dry. The stone is small, brown, weighing 0.25 grams, broadly round, with a narrowly round base and apex. Its weight of the total weight of the fruit is 7.1%. It is removed from the pulp quite easily. The content of substances in 100 grams of pulp: dry soluble substances - 13.6%, sugar - 6.8%, general acids - 1.3%, ascorbic acid - 12.8 mg, vitamin P - 306.7 mg. It should be noted that the shrub varieties, including the Ural ruby, are superior to the common cherry in terms of the content of nutrients.

Characteristics

  • The variety is late in terms of ripening. Ripens simultaneously in the second half of August. By the way, flowering is also late - late May - early June;
  • begins fruiting early - 3 years after planting;
  • the yield for a low bushy plant is not bad - usually this figure is 6 - 7 kg per tree, but under favorable conditions, the yield can double or even more - up to 15 kg;
  • fruits are resistant to cracking;
  • frost resistance is excellent. In regions of tolerance, where winter temperatures often drop to -35 ° C, and frosts are possible in spring, the tree shows good winter hardiness of the bark and buds;
  • drought resistance of cherry is high;
  • self-rooted trees, timely rejuvenated, can successfully bear fruit for more than 30 years;
  • the immunity of the Ural ruby is average - moniliosis is often affected, coccomycosis - less often. Slightly damaged by cherry slimy sawfly and cherry aphid;
  • the purpose of the fruit is table and technical;
  • the berries are very attractive in appearance - the overall score is 4.5 points;
  • the variety is self-fertile and requires pollinators - Mayak, Vole, Schedra, Alatyrskaya, Zvezdochka, Zagrebinskaya.

Features of growing and care

The variety is very hardy. Grows well in windy areas and sandy soils. The shrub form requires annual pruning. Planting, taking into account the harsh climate, is best done in early spring, before the sap flow begins. Young plants need to be insulated in winter.

The undoubted advantages of the Ural ruby are excellent winter hardiness, excellent fruit quality and good yield. These characteristics make it possible to grow cherries not only in hobbyist gardens, but also on an industrial scale. The variety is suitable for intensive gardening.

The disadvantages are not too strong immunity. But preventive measures that need to be carried out on time will eliminate the problem.
