Kolya cabbage variety (F1)

Dutch firm Monsanto Holland B.V. has long been known in Russia. Its Seminis Vegetable Seeds brand is the world's largest vegetable breeding, growing and marketing brand. Recently, the breeders of this brand offered vegetable growers a very promising novelty - the white cabbage Kolya (Kolia). In some sources, this variety is also called Caliber or Colia. In 2010, the novelty was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia and received admission for cultivation in five regions of the country: North-West, Central, Volgo-Vyatka, Ural and West Siberian. Vegetable growers of Belarus will also be able to evaluate the novelty. In 2013, our hero was included in the State Register of varieties of the country and allowed to grow in the Gomel, Grodno, Vitebsk, Minsk and Mogilev regions. The belonging of the variety to hybrids is confirmed by the mandatory F1 marking.

Description

The plant is strong, erect, with good growth vigor. The rosette of leaves is raised. Leaves are medium-sized, transverse-oval, with a slightly wavy edge, the surface of the leaf plate is blistery, with a strong waxy coating. The color of the leaves is green, with a grayish tint. The outer leaves are slightly concave. The nerve of the leaf is pinnate, the veins are not rigid. The head of cabbage is even, rounded, covered, the inner leaves are thin and juicy, densely packed. The forks are whitish on the cut. The density of the head of cabbage is estimated by the State Register at 4.3 points. Internal stump of medium size. Kolya's outer stump is medium, but more often long, 9.5 - 10 cm high, thanks to which the cabbage is not afraid of dampness, which means that it is less susceptible to diseases that cause occasional waterlogging of the soil. The diameter of a ripened fork is on average 22.5 cm. The average weight of a commercial vegetable according to the State Register is 2.0 - 2.5 kg, according to other sources, the weight can reach 4.0 - 8.0 kg. Taste qualities are very good and excellent, which is confirmed by gardeners. The peculiarity of the variety is that it does not have a bitter taste in its taste, so it does not take time to mature - you can eat the vegetable right from the garden.

Characteristics

  • The Dutch hybrid belongs to the mid-season varieties. The growing season from planting seedlings to the beginning of harvest takes 120 - 125 days;
  • the crop has a very high yield potential. According to the State Register, the marketable yield is 371 - 498 c / ha, which is at a level with the standard Gift... The maximum indicator was obtained in the Rostov region and amounted to 652 c / ha. Comparison with a similar hybrid will be interesting. Atria, the average yield of which is 100 t / ha (although in some farms near Moscow it was possible to remove 120 tons of this vegetable from one hectare). So, Kolya's potential productivity is higher, provided there is regular watering, you can safely count on 150 t / ha. A simple gardener who performs agricultural techniques usual for the culture will be rewarded with 9.5 kg of cabbage from 1 square meter;
  • due to minimal losses during harvesting, the yield of marketable products is 92%;
  • an incredibly valuable feature of the variety is its resistance to cracking. The plant is capable of standing in the field for another 20 days after full ripening, maintaining the integrity of the fork;

  • the good immunity inherent in hybrid plants in our hero was manifested in a high resistance to fusarium (race 1), the ability to resist mucous and vascular bacteriosis. Resistance to downy mildew (downy mildew) is slightly higher than that of the identical varieties Atria and Larsia. There is also a tolerance for annoying thrips, which not only spoil the presentation of the vegetable, but are also carriers of diseases;
  • during long-term transportation, cabbage does not lose marketability, does not suffer from mechanical damage;
  • longevity is still not high enough, although it is difficult to call it low. The vegetable can be stored until March - April, subject to storage standards (rather high humidity and temperature not higher than + 2 ° C);
  • the crop is used in a universal way.Cabbage is used in its natural form, it tolerates heat treatment well and after it turns out to be incredibly tender, therefore it is used to prepare various dishes. Kolya is well suited for fermentation and pickling.

Agrotechnics

The variety can be grown in a seedling and seedling way. With small planting volumes, preference is given to seedlings. In this case, sowing seeds can be carried out from the beginning of March to the end of April. Seedlings are planted in the ground at the beginning of May, by that time the young plants should be about 50 - 55 days old. The plant is unpretentious to soils. But it does not like acidic soils, therefore, before planting in such areas, it will need to be deoxidized. The best predecessors are onions, root vegetables, legumes, grains, cucumbers. Seedling planting scheme: row spacing 50 - 60 cm, distance between plants in a row - about 40 cm. Agrotechnology is generally standard for the culture as a whole. But our hero requires a special attitude to watering. When growing seedlings, watering should be moderate. But during the growing season, soil moisture should be 70%. In addition, the hybrid requires illuminated areas, forms a small and loose head of cabbage in the shade. The nuance of cultivation is the need for hilling, since the outer cabbage stump often grows quite long. On the one hand, this prevents the development of diseases with waterlogging, but on the other hand, there is a threat of overwhelming the ripe head of cabbage.

Kolya is a promising hybrid highly appreciated for its high potential yield, excellent uniform fork structure, excellent health. The ability to immediately use a vegetable from the garden and its universal use is another plus in the treasury of useful characteristics of the variety. The farmers also paid attention to the variety: the crop is perfectly transported and stored, and the vegetable itself is quite attractive, leveled and dense. During the cultivation period, there were no negative reviews about cabbage.
