Potato variety Baron
Baron is an early ripe potato variety (Solanum tuberosum) for table use. It was obtained by breeders of the Ural Research Institute of Agriculture in the early 2000s. In 2006 it was included in the state register of plants of the Russian Federation. Zoned in three regions of the country: Volgo-Vyatka, West Siberian, Far East. It is considered one of the best early ripening varieties for cultivation in the Ural region. Prone to scab damage.
From the appearance of full shoots to the moment of harvest, 60-70 days pass. The first digging can be done on the 45th day of the growing season.
The plant is tall, leaf type. Stems are semi-erect, slightly colored. Leaves are medium in size, open type, green in color. The edges of the leaf plate are moderately or slightly wavy. Corolla is medium, light reddish-violet in color.
In one potato nest, 6-9 fairly large, aligned tubers are formed. The average mass of commercial copies is noted in the range of 109-193 grams. The tubers are oval in shape. The peel is yellow, smooth to the touch. The pulp is light yellow in color. The eyes are red, their depth is average.
According to the results of state variety trials, the marketable yield of the Baron was 113-237 c / ha, which is 42-77 c / ha more than Pushkinets. During the first digging, on the 45th day of vegetation of plants, 142−186 c / ha were collected, 64 c / ha higher than the Udacha and Pushkinets standards. At the second digging, on the 55th day after full germination, the yield was recorded in the range of 182-237 c / ha, 3-77 c / ha more than the established standards. The largest amount was obtained in the Republic of Mari El - 371 centners of potatoes were harvested per hectare of planting area, which is 84 centners / ha higher than the results of Success. According to the originator, the potential yield can reach 600 c / ha. Marketability 82−96%, keeping quality is excellent - 95%.
The variety has excellent taste. The tubers are well boiled, in the finished form, the pulp is crumbly, with a pleasant consistency. Our hero is suitable for cooking any dishes, especially good for mashed potatoes, baking, cooking. It is not particularly suitable for salads because of its good digestibility. The pulp contains 13.4-14.8% starch.
The Baron is perfectly adapted to growing in regions with difficult climatic conditions. Also, these potatoes are undemanding to soils, but they show the best yield on well-prepared soils with a sufficient amount of nutrients and minerals. In agricultural technology, our hero is very simple, he only needs standard measures, such as hilling, weeding, loosening the soil, feeding and watering. Particular attention should be paid to disease prevention.
There is only one nuance of agricultural technology - experts recommend germinating Baron's tubers before planting in order to improve germination and reduce ripening time. By the way, due to the pronounced dormant period, tubers are perfectly stored throughout the year, while not sprouting or losing their marketable and consumer qualities.
Potatoes are resistant to the causative agent of cancer, rarely affected by the golden cyst nematode. According to the All-Russian Research Institute of Phytopathology, it is susceptible to late blight by tops and moderately susceptible to tubers. During the tests of the variety in the field, there was a strong damage to the plants with common scab. This vulnerability is the main disadvantage of our hero. Gardeners also noticed a tendency of tubers to rot in the ground, but this phenomenon is quite rare and depends on many factors.
The baron showed himself very well on his personal plots and production areas. He was especially distinguished by stable productivity, rather large tubers, excellent taste and excellent keeping quality. The plus is that these potatoes can be grown from seeds, and even very successfully.
In the list of shortcomings, the main place is occupied by the tendency to defeat scab. However, a skilled gardener can easily cope with this nuance. This variety is one of the best suited for cultivation in regions with cool climates, and is especially good for cultivation in the Urals.
