The company has been working for a long time to create new varieties and hybrids of carrots that would meet the wishes of not only consumers, but also producers of this vegetable. One of the varieties that deserves attention is Baltimore. In 2010, it was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia. After variety trials, she received admission in the following regions: North-West, Volgo-Vyatka, Central, Nizhnevolzhsky, Central Black Earth District, Ural, West Siberian, East Siberian, Far East. The vegetable showed the best results in the Central region. It is a hybrid. Belongs to the transitional type Berlikum / Nantes. Our hero has a number of remarkable qualities that make him interesting for industrial cultivation, one of them is his suitability for mechanical harvesting. The variety has gained popularity not only in Russia, but also in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.
Description
The plant is decorated with a strong, erect leaf rosette, up to 35 cm high. The leaves of carrots are long, powerful, finely or medium dissected, deep green in color. Root crops are smooth, cylindrical, with a blunt spout, medium or long length - 20 - 25 cm, diameter - 3 - 5 cm, peel and flesh are perfectly colored, bright orange. The skin is smooth, thin and delicate. The eyes are light, there are no lateral roots. The flesh is crispy, moderately dense, juicy, sweet on the palate. The core is thin, deep orange. The hybrid has valuable nutritional, dietary and medicinal properties. 100 grams of raw product contains: sugars 7.0 - 7.7%, dry matter 11.7 - 12.4%, carotene up to 22.4 mg. On the Brix scale, the measure of the mass ratio of sucrose dissolved in water to liquid is 7.3 as a percentage. The mass of root crops declared by the originator is 100 - 250 grams, the State Register practically confirmed this figure - 114 - 230 grams. From 1 kilogram of root crops, you can get 508 ml of juice.
Characteristics
- In terms of ripening, Baltimore belongs to the mid-season varieties. From the moment of germination to the onset of technical ripeness of carrots, an average of 103 days pass. Our hero is suitable for the production of early bunch products (this requires only 80 - 90 days), and is also grown as a crop for long-term storage;
- the variety is very productive, which is confirmed by the State Register. Marketable yield for the test period was 336 - 604 c / ha, which is 97 - 120 c / ha higher than the standard variety Nantes 4... The maximum yield was shown in the Moscow region, where a record 1,078 centners / ha were recorded. Other sources give data on 3.4 - 6.0 kg per square meter;
- the yield of marketable products is quite high, 80 - 92%, which makes the hybrid attractive for industrial cultivation;
- root crops have a high resistance to cracking, even in wet weather, which only confirms their high marketability;
- the resistance of carrots to diseases and pests is high, although there are no specific data in official sources. Vegetable growers confirm the excellent resistance of the leaf apparatus of Baltimore to various spots and powdery mildew, and the root crop is not "in the teeth" of the nematode, which can significantly reduce the yield of marketable products. But preventive treatments should still be carried out on time;
- the variety has good stress resistance;
- transportability is excellent, as well as keeping quality.The crop can withstand long-term transportation; subject to the required temperatures and humidity, it can be stored almost until the new harvest;
- the way of use is universal. Due to its excellent taste characteristics, carrots are recommended for use in their natural form, indispensable in home cooking for cooking. Root vegetables are processed into juices, vegetable puree, suitable for canning, for example, as an ingredient for assorted vegetables.
Agrotechnics
The hybrid is unpretentious and undemanding. But well-drained and fertile soils, such as loam, are best suited for growing. Sufficient illumination of the site is of great importance, while even partial shade can negatively affect the yield. The best predecessors are tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage. The seeds from the manufacturer have already been treated with thiram (as evidenced by the information on the package). Sowing rate: 0.8 - 1.5 million / ha. The distance between the rows is at least 20 cm. The best way of irrigation is drip. The sowing period is from April to May, in pre-dug soil. If the gardener does not have time to sow in these terms, then there is no reason to be upset. Carrots sown at a later date will have time to gain the prescribed weight and form the prescribed shape of the root crop. To obtain early production, pre-winter sowing is carried out.
