Rose Abraham Darby
Abraham Darby is a variety of English roses by David Austin. Released in 1985. Obtained by crossing a climbing rose 'Aloha'(Boerner, 1949) and the' Yellow Cushion 'floribunda. Named after the English metallurgist and industrialist, the designer of the first iron bridge, located 15 km from the David Austin nursery. Registration name: 'AUScot'. This variety harmoniously combines the ancient shape of roses and a delicious aroma.
The bush is neat, vigorous, reaches a height of 90 - 150 cm (in a favorable climate, the plant can grow up to 305 cm), width - 90 - 120 cm. The foliage is glossy, medium size, green in color.
The flowers are large, 12-15 cm in diameter, and contain about 70 petals. The shape of the roses changes as they bloom from a rounded-pointed bud to a cup-shaped one. The unopened bud has an apricot color. The opened flowers are apricot-pink with bleached edges. They grow one at a time or are collected in a brush up to three buds. In sunny weather, roses have an apricot-cream shade, in cloudy weather they are pink. The scent of flowers is refreshing, fragrant, with hints of fruit and rose oil, which lasts throughout the season.
Abraham Derby has two flowering waves. Flowers stay on the bush until autumn. The first bloom is profuse in June, the second is moderate in late summer.
This rose prefers fertile and drained soil, as well as planting in well-lit areas, without the influence of drafts and cold winds. Does not tolerate lowland and swampy places.
Among the main measures for caring for a plant, one can single out: periodic fertilization, sanitary spring pruning, removal of wilted flowers, preliminary autumn pruning of shoots before wintering (if necessary).
In order to grow the Abraham Darby as a climbing rose, there is no main stem pruning in preparation for winter. Only lateral small and weak shoots are pruned. It is recommended to start forming the plant from the moment it is planted in the garden. And gradually, in 3 - 4 years, you can form a climbing rose.
On the contrary, if you want to grow a dense, spreading bush, you should only cut off unproductive shoots and frozen tips. Large flowers of roses can droop under the weight, so it is recommended to grow a scrub on a support.
To grow a compact bush with many new shoots and an abundance of flowers, you should cut the shoots 2/3 of their length. Based on feedback from gardeners, such short-cut roses will bloom a couple of weeks later than usual.
Abraham Derby has medium resistance to black spot and powdery mildew.
The frost resistance of this variety, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), corresponds to zone 5b (minus 26.1 ° C). This variety thrives in temperate climates. In rainy regions, from prolonged frequent downpours, the petals stick together and the flowers lose their beautiful appearance. In general, the plant behaves differently in different climatic zones.
The plant must be covered for the winter (for example, with dry oak leaves, spruce or fir spruce branches, juniper branches) after the first frost, after removing the foliage from the bushes and loosening the topsoil to provide air access to the roots of the roses. Shoots growing on a trunk or a support are removed and bent to the ground on a litter of spruce branches, otherwise they will rot in the melt water under cover. There are several ways to shelter for the winter, use one that you have tested and is suitable for your climate.
Variety advantages: unpretentiousness, delicious aroma, active growth of the bush.
Disadvantages: flowers fly around quickly in the heat; poor resistance to rain, moisture and rust; flowers sometimes droop under their own weight.
Abraham Derby is a luxurious fragrant rose with large nostalgic flowers. It is perfect for a small rose garden, mixborder and landscape composition. Excellent companions can be added to this variety: 'Grafin von Hardenberg', 'Elizabeth Stuart', 'Alan Titchmarsh', 'Tea Clipper', 'Tchaikovsky',' Crown Princess Margareta '. An amazing combination with ‘Golden Celebration’. Add raspberry tones with 'Darcey Bussell'. You can also highlight the unique color with lighter shades of ‘Claire Austin’ and ‘Crocus Rose’ flowers. And to complement it with a sunny hue with the excellent 'Charlotte'. Such unusual compositions will be an exquisite decoration for your garden.
The Abraham Derby variety has been used in breeding such varieties as 'Crown Princess Margareta' (1991), 'Golden Celebration' (1992), 'Pat Austin' (1995), William Morris (1998), 'Marianne' (2001).
Synonymous names: 'Candy Rain', 'Country Darby', 'Ebreham Derby', 'Abraham'.

Abraham Derby is one of my favorite roses. Very delicate and aromatic. I planted it on my site, 8 meters from the house, but the smell is felt even when you sit on the open terrace. I collect the petals and make myself some tea. This charming rose delighted me this year with flowering in early September.
The Abraham Darby rose has a lot of advantages - both the beauty of the flower with gentle transitions of pink to yellow, and a very pleasant aroma. But I love her for the overall beauty and shape of the bush. This is the center of the entire composition in the flowerbed. I can’t call it climbing, it doesn’t shoot up long shoots that can be wrapped around arches or hedges. These are very tough, erect shoots. And they keep their shape all season, regardless of the weather, or the fact that the bush is hung from top to bottom with huge buds. And no matter how I cut it in the spring, but I cut it short, it invariably grows in a very neat spherical shape. Large flowers can wilt under the weight of the water from the rains, but the branches themselves are not. Of the shortcomings, I can name a predisposition to gray rot. As soon as the rains drag on, the buds begin to become covered with a gray-brown bloom, and fall off without even opening. I fertilize it, like all other roses, until the end of July with nitrogen fertilizers, from August - with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Blooms all summer. So, if anyone needs a rose to decorate the center of a flower bed, then this is it.
Natasha, good evening! I got such a rose. How to plant relative to the cardinal points? On the south side of the house, how will she like it?))
My rose is 2 years old, blooms and grows well. Beautiful and aromatic. It tolerates rains and damp cool weather in the Leningrad region well. (Only in September the buds began to rot slightly. But this is due to the humid climate of the northern capital and marshy soil. For the regions to the south, I'm sure there are no such problems.)
Good day! Can this rose be used for jam?
