Rose Blue River (Blue River)
Blue River is a German hybrid tea variety. Bred by Reimer Cordes - one of the founders of the company "Wilhelm Cordes and Sons", engaged in the selection and production of roses. Cross between 'Blue Moon' and 'Zorina' roses in 1984 in Germany. The registration name is 'KORsicht'.
The plant is erect, branched, reaches a height of 75 - 100 cm, in width - up to 75 cm. Shoots are strong, with thorns. The leaves are semi-glossy, dark green in color. Leaves do not grow on the lower part of the stem, which should be taken into account when planting.
The flowers are densely double, 9 - 11 cm in diameter, with a closed center, contain about 40 swirling petals. They grow one at a time or are collected in a brush of 2 - 5 buds. They have a pale lavender color with a transition to magenta along the edge of the petals. When blooming, they acquire a light silver-blue tint. The unopened bud is dark crimson. The shape of roses changes during flowering from a conical bud to a globular one. This variety has a magnificent fragrant aroma, the smell is retained even in a dried flower.
Blue River is suitable for cultivation in central Russia, provided that it is planted in a place protected from northern winds. USDA frost resistance zone: 6b (up to minus 20 ° C). Despite the resistance to precipitation and low temperatures, the plants must be hilled and covered for the winter. For shelter, sawdust, coniferous spruce branches or oak leaves are used. Before sheltering, the shoots are cut and the topsoil is loosened to provide air access to the rose bushes.
Resistance to powdery mildew and black spot is average.
This hybrid tea rose prefers fertile, well-drained soils and well-lit areas. Regular feeding and fertilization, spring and autumn pruning of shoots, removal of wilted flowers are required.
Advantages of the Blue River variety: fragrant and colorful flowers, disease resistance.
The disadvantages include poor foliage in the lower part of the bush. Therefore, many gardeners, in order to hide this flaw, plant low-growing plants to this rose.
Blue River is an unusual and attractive rose, a sophisticated aesthetics for gardeners. The play of raspberry-lavender shades accompanies its flowering throughout the season. It is perfect for single planting, landscaping, flower beds and a small rose garden. Looks gentle when paired with ‘Mainzer Fastnacht’ and ‘Blue Moon’. They all bloom at the same time, harmonize in color and flower shape. And you can emphasize the beauty of this trio with phlox, cloves, lavender and gypsophila.
Other names for this variety: 'Blue Lake', 'Blue River'.
As the saying goes, "the taste and color" ... but I do not like the rose at all. Yes, it has a pretty and original color, but you can only admire it if the rose bush grows in the shade, since in a sunny place the flowers quickly fade, turning into a faded rag. But, if you plant it in the shade, then the bush will constantly be sick with powdery mildew. The rose has a pleasant aroma, but it is so strong that it "clogs" all the other aromas and smells of the garden - at some point it starts to annoy. The plant overwinters perfectly - there are no complaints about this, and if it freezes a little, it recovers and grows well and quickly.
