Apple variety Chudnoe
Wonderful - a late summer apple variety of the selection of the South Ural Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable and Potato Growing (Chelyabinsk). It was bred through crossing a complex hybrid form (Ural winter x 11-20-12) with the German old variety Eliza Ratke (it is often called Vydubetskaya weeping). The author of the Chudnoye apple tree is the Chelyabinsk breeder A.M. Mazunin. The variety is suitable for cultivation in all zones of Russia.
The trees are undersized (natural dwarfs), they are often considered to be naturally self-growing varieties. This means that the crown of apple trees has a fairly large diameter and is located very low, literally "spreading" along the ground (that is, in fact, it takes a horizontal shape). The height of trees does not exceed 1.5 m on vegetatively propagated clonal dwarf rootstocks and 2 - 2.5 m on vigorous seed stocks.
Fruits are above medium and large size, the average weight of one apple is 120 - 140 g, the maximum weight is 200 g. In shape, the fruits are flat-round, sometimes slightly ribbed, outwardly similar to the parent variety Eliza Ratke. According to the main color, the apples are yellowish-green, the integumentary color is either completely absent, or expressed unevenly in the form of a rich dark red blush on the sunny side.
The pulp is characterized by juiciness and fine-grained structure, its taste is very good, sour-sweet, and a pleasant aftertaste remains. Apples ripen in early August, are stored long enough for a summer variety, for one month. According to YUNIIPK, the fruits of Chudny contain: the sum of sugars (10.7%), soluble solids (13.9%), acids (0.3%), pectin substances (1.2% on wet weight), vitamin C ( 18.6 mg / 100 g). Apples make delicious sweet desserts (jellies, jams, preserves, marmalades, juices, apple mousse, compotes), as well as wine.
The apple tree is quite fast-growing, the trees enter fruiting in the 3rd year after planting. The yield is quite high. With regard to winter hardiness: among dwarf apple trees, this variety has a very high winter hardiness and is able to withstand cold winds and prolonged frosts; relative to all other Ural varieties, the winter hardiness of the Chudnoye apple tree is estimated as average. The cultivar has good scab resistance.
The main advantages of this apple tree include: early maturity, high productivity, good winter hardiness, scab resistance and a convenient size of trees (dwarfs).
Chudny has not yet revealed any significant shortcomings.
Good day! Did I understand correctly that the Chudnoye apple tree is a self-fertile variety? On my site there are varieties of Korichnoye, Melba, and recently I planted Kovrovoe. Will they be able to become a pollinator for her? Or do you need to purchase the varieties you recommend? Thank!
This apple tree has been growing for 8 years. The tree is constantly freezing, you have to cut the top off. And so in the end it became creeping. BUT! During this time I have never seen apples. Every summer I tell myself - well, I'll wait another year and get rid of him. Until the hand goes up. Maybe it will finally thank me for my patience.
I also had 5 years without apples, and this spring I walked around him with an ax (I read such a recipe against infertility) and oh Miracle - this year with apples! Big ones hang on the edge of the branches, and my little dog brings them to me to play like with a ball.
Possibly deep-set: the root collar should be at ground level.
We planted Wonderful in 2015.It is worth it, it did not bloom in the spring, but it is not low - there are 2 meters! We are waiting for it to bloom!
