Apple variety Kovalenkovskoe

Kovalenkovskoe is a late-summer sweet-fruited apple tree of the selection of the Belarusian Research Institute of Fruit Growing (now RUE “Institute of Fruit Growing” of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus). The seedling was obtained through free pollination of the Lafram variety. The authorship belongs to G.K. Kovalenko and M.I. Sukhotsky. Sometimes you can hear another name for this apple tree - Red sweet. Since 1999, Kovalenkovskoye has been included in the State Register of Varieties and Trees and Shrubs of the Republic of Belarus. In Russia, the variety is zoned in the Central region.

Trees are medium-sized, fast-growing. The crown is quite dense, attractively rounded (reverse pyramidal), medium thickened, with dense leafing. Skeletal branches are powerful, slightly curved in shape. The bark on the trunk and main branches is brown in color, with a slight glossy sheen. Shoots are thick, rounded, fleecy, compactly located, colored dark red. Leaves are medium-sized, elliptical, long-pointed, with crenate edges, dark green in color. Fruit ovaries are formed mainly on annelids, less often at the ends of annual growths.

Flowering takes place early. The flowers are white, large in size, in the inflorescence there are up to 5 pieces. Kidney awakening and sprouting ability are high.

The fruits of the Kovalenkovskoe apple tree are large (the average apple weight is about 150 - 180 g, the largest specimens can reach 200 - 205 g), medium one-dimensionality, regular round, slightly conical shape. The main color of the fruit is light green, the integumentary color is expressed through a blurry, saturated dark red blush, which occupies almost the entire surface of the apple. At the same time, the color of the fruits slightly differs depending on their location in the crown of the tree: the brightest fruits are concentrated in places with the greatest illumination, and in the fruits inside the crown, the main color is more noticeable and the integumentary color is less saturated (a lighter red blush with strokes and stripes). Subcutaneous dots of medium size, green in color, subtle, are present in small quantities. The stalks are medium in length and thickness. The saucer is of medium depth and wide. The funnel is deep, narrow in shape. Closed cup.

The pulp is white, fine-grained, medium density, prickly, juicy, medium aromatic, absolutely sweet taste. Even in unripe fruits, sourness is not felt. On a 5-point tasting scale, the taste of this apple tree is estimated at 4.5 points. By chemical composition, the fruits contain: dry matter (13.6%), the amount of sugars (10.86%), titratable acids (0.19%), ascorbic acid (12.2 mg / 100 g). The variety is well suited for all types of processing (preserves, jams, juices, etc.)

By the timing of fruit ripening, Kovalenkovskoe is usually referred to as late summer varieties: in the conditions of the southern regions of Belarus and Ukraine, the first fruits ripen by Yablochny Savior, i.e. by August 19th. Moreover, the ripening period is uneven and, accordingly, stretches for a certain period of time. But already in the conditions of the Moscow region, this variety is rather early autumn and harvesting is usually carried out here not earlier than mid-September. In a cool room, the fruits are stored for one month, in the refrigerator - no more than 2 months. The harmonious taste and aroma of the fruit is fully revealed in 10 - 15 days after removal from the tree. During the ripening period, the apples do not crumble and continue to firmly hold on to the branches.

The early maturity is quite high: on a stock of 62−396 trees begin to bear fruit already in the 2nd - 3rd year after planting in the garden, on a seed stock - at the 3rd - 4th year. Fruiting is stable, regular. The yield is high (up to 30 t / ha with a planting pattern of 5 × 3 m on an average rootstock of 54-118).

The variety is highly winter-hardy and moderately drought-resistant. Resistance to fungal diseases is average: in epiphytotic years, fruits and leaves are slightly affected by scab.

The main advantages of the Kovalenkovskoe apple tree include: elegant fruits with a high consumer and commodity assessment; non-sprinkling of a ripe crop; high rates of early maturity, productivity and winter hardiness.

The most significant disadvantages include: a somewhat prolonged period of fruit ripening and the tendency of the crown to thicken.

Very good, just great variety. Our tree is still young, the harvest is not yet in buckets, although it is clear that the apple tree is fruitful - the branches are glued over. We eat everything from the tree for now, so tasty that there is nothing to lie. The tree with fruits is very beautiful - they turn red in June, only in the shade the color is muted. There is no acid at all in the fruits, and the sweetness is not cloying. The fruits are juicy, do not become boring, you can eat a couple in a row, hardly more - they are large enough. In short, as long as they are, they are attracted all the time. I want to make another tree on a seed stock, let it grow and flaunt. Taldom, Moscow region.

Very tasty and healthy apples. I have stomach problems, and this variety allows them to be eaten and, moreover, does not cause an increase in appetite, since there is no acid, but sweetness in moderation. A wonderful variety.
