Apple variety Elena
Elena is an apple variety of the selection of the Belarusian Research Institute of Fruit Growing (now the RUE “Institute of Fruit Growing” of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus) with fruits of an early summer ripening period. Obtained by crossing the Early Sweet with the English Discovery variety. The authorship belongs to the breeders E.V. Semashko, Z.A. Kozlovskaya and G.M. Marudo. The variety was submitted for State testing in 2001. Approved for cultivation in the Mogilev region (eastern part of Belarus).
The trees are medium-sized, with a rounded pyramidal, slightly raised, medium thickened crown. The fruits are tied mainly on simple and complex ringlets.
The fruits of the Elena apple tree are of lower average size, the weight of one apple is on average 120 g, the largest fruits do not exceed 150 g. The shape of the apples is flat-round. According to the main color, the fruits are light green, the integumentary color occupies more than half of the apple surface in the form of a blurred bright pink-red blush. Subcutaneous dots of gray color, large, numerous, clearly visible.
The pulp is greenish-white in color, medium density, fine-grained structure, the taste is very juicy, delicate, with aroma, pleasant sour-sweet taste (according to the tasting rating - 4.8 points). By chemical composition, the fruits contain: the sum of sugars (10.86%), soluble solids (13.2%), titratable acids (0.36%), pectin substances (0.78%), ascorbic acid (6.8 mg / 100 g).
Fruits ripen earlier White filling for 7 - 10 days. The consumer period lasts from the end of July to the first ten days of August (in the conditions of Belarus).
The early fruiting rate of the Elena apple tree is high: fruiting occurs in the 2nd - 3rd year after planting in the garden on rootstocks 5−25−3 and 62−396. The variety is recognized as productive (up to 25 t / ha). Good winter hardiness. Scab resistance is average. It is also important to note that the variety is prone to crop overload (the fruits are tied abundantly, they also become smaller on adult apple trees), therefore, it is required to regularly thin out the ovaries.
