Lobo apple variety
This apple tree belongs to the group of winter varieties. Lobo was obtained from the seeds of the local variety Mekintosh (Mac, McIntosh), at the Ottawa Experiment Station by free pollination. It appeared in Russia relatively recently, state tests on it were started in 1971. Initially, it was included in the State Register of Zoned Varieties for the Central Black Earth Region (1972). Lobo inherited high taste from the parent variety. For amateur orchards, this apple tree is still a novelty, but it has good prospects for widespread distribution.
Characteristics of varietal characteristics... The Lobo apple tree is characterized by a relatively high yield (above average). The fruiting regime is annual. It enters the fruiting period early and quickly increases its yield, which allows it to be classified as an intensive type. The fruits have an excellent dessert taste and aroma. They are medium in size, 100 - 180 g, flat-rounded. Fully ripe fruits are dark crimson (50 - 100%) covered with a noticeable waxy coating. The pulp is very tender, almost white in color, the taste is sweet and sour. Taste on a five-point scale is highly rated - from 4.4 to 4.8 points. The peel of apples is shiny, thin; sometimes a fine mesh of corking is slightly expressed. The harvest time is shortened and usually takes about ten days (from September 25 to October 5). Apples are well preserved (October - January) and transportable.
According to most data, winter hardiness of the variety is estimated to be above average. The grafted branches in the crown of winter-hardy trees retain fruit buds and yield crops even after particularly harsh winters when temperatures drop to 36 ° C. A more guaranteed way of growing is grafting on a hardy stock (medium-sized 'Progress' is suitable). The apple tree can be grafted onto a dwarf rootstock and formed in bush and stanza form. You can not graft Lobo on Chinese women and their seedlings.
The variety is affected by scab (resistance is considered weak, and leaves are more affected) and powdery mildew. Resistance rates to these diseases fluctuate; in favorable climatic conditions in the absence of high humidity, trees practically do not get sick.
Features of crown formation... Lobo apple trees are of the medium-sized type, although at a young age they grow quite quickly. The sparse crown of the tree changes shape as it grows from high-rounded to wide-rounded. Branches are flexible, curved, sometimes drooping, of medium thickness. Leaves are usually large, oval, heart-shaped base. The stalks are short and thick. The flowering intensity is medium. Fruiting is concentrated mainly on ringlets and fruit twigs, so trees need rejuvenating pruning.
This variety can be grown on all types of hardy rootstocks. Depending on the climatic conditions, dwarf rootstocks of medium and vigorous types are used. In the standard form, it can be grown in the southern and middle regions of the European part, in the regions of the north, the aboveground part is subject to freezing to the level of snow cover. Due to the preserved branches, the tree is well restored, which is facilitated by the tendency to grow rapidly.
Growing areas... The Lobo apple tree is resistant to arid conditions, which makes it possible to successfully grow in the Volga region and to the south (Saratov region). Distributed in the Moscow region and the Urals region. Beyond the Urals, there is experience in growing this standard winter variety in the Omsk region. In stanza form, it is grown in amateur gardens of the Novosibirsk region and the Altai Territory.
I live in the Ulyanovsk region. In 2013, she planted the Lobo apple tree, in 2014 the apple tree bore a harvest. The fruits are exactly similar in description. I rate the taste as 5+. But my apples are fully ripe on September 1st. Recomend for everybody. If you can recommend new varieties of apples, write.
TATIANA
I would advise you to try the Memory of Ulyanishchev and the Legend. I think they will pass in your region in terms of winter hardiness.
An excellent apple, sweet, with white flesh, lies well. I recommend.
Perhaps one of the best varieties! Excellent taste, aroma, and appearance is beyond praise.
Very tasty (5+), it seems to ripen early - by September 1, there are already ripe fruits (in the Moscow region). But not easy - apples go bad quickly.
Natalia, keeping quality depends on the cleaning period. They need to be harvested at the beginning of ripening, and they ripen during storage for 1-3 months.
We grow these apples in the north of the Moscow region. The seedling was advised about 10 years ago at the Institute of Horticulture. An excellent apple, very beautiful and very tasty, ripens by September 1-10. The yield is high, the branches can break from the severity of the fruit. All friends and colleagues are delighted with such a treat. I recommend. 5+
Natalya, the branches were really bursting, but the next year I rested. And the article says that fruiting is regular. Another difference between my Lobo apple tree is that the fruit pulp is pleasantly yellowish.
Yesterday, October 1, the first harvest was taken from the Lobo apple tree. True, it turned out to be only one apple. The rest either got wounded or fell earlier. The whole family - 4 people - ate one apple. I liked it very much. Looking forward to next year's harvest.
I agree with the above reviews on the quality of the fruit. The only remark is that the Canadian Lobo variety is suitable for picking fruits at the end of September and can be consumed after a short period of time. A very good autumn-winter variety. Of the shortcomings - low resistance to scab and winter hardiness of trees, a little more.
I bought the Lobo apple tree. It did not bloom for a long time. Bloomed this year. It confuses me that my apple tree has red leaves. Maybe it's not Lobo?
Probably, this is your decorative apple tree, or the scion is suppressed by the awakened bud of the wild stock.
I also have a Lobo apple tree. The fruits are ripe at the end of October and the fruits are not juicy and very tough, do not bite off. Maybe the variety is different?
Lobo is a winter variety; after harvesting, the fruits should ripen to consumer maturity for a month or two with proper storage. However, it happens, with a successful season, they can be eaten by picking them off the branch.
Lobo belongs to winter varieties. But, one of the few that can be eaten directly from the tree. The apples are huge, beautiful and delicious. I bought an apple tree as Venyaminovskaya. But, it turned out to be a Lobo variety. Everything turned out to be simple. Venyaminovskoe belongs to immune varieties, and Lobo is affected by scab. And only after the apple tree fell ill with scab, I realized that this was a re-grading. The fruits are not affected, only the leaves. But the processing by Horus and Skor did the trick. Very delicious.
I disagree with the author and the comments categorically! The variety is not zoned for the north of the Moscow region! I do not recommend growing on the 56th parallel and higher! The description of the variety as a whole corresponds to reality and the taste of the fruit is not bad, but not sweet. And the trees are tall. Only the overwhelming majority of fruits are affected by points-wormholes, many are small and the yield is low compared to traditional varieties near Moscow. This is exactly how the non-zoned variety behaves.
Mikhail, in our Middle Urals, this variety grew well, however, on the north side of the apple tree there was a greenhouse as protection from the wind. The tree is not tall, small.
Mikhail, most likely you have a re-grade. Along the Lobo apple tree. The tree is small, the crown is rounded, more winter-hardy than Shtrifel and Bogatyr. In Ryazan, the Lobo variety is present in many private gardens. The apples are beautiful, large, with a dessert taste.
This is my favorite apple variety! Those who write that the pulp is either yellowish or tasteless or the like, you most likely have a different variety! The pulp of my Lobo apple tree is "snow-white with pink veins, the aroma is pleasant, delicate, the taste is very pleasant, the highest score, the pulp is not hard, I would say, coarse-grained, bites off effortlessly. It so happened that the apple tree grew behind the greenhouse, (I live on Middle Urals), that is, the north wind was restrained by the greenhouse and the apple tree grew beautifully. By the 4th year Maybe by 5th, I can be a little mistaken), we ate 3 apples, the next year the harvest increased several times, and the next year we were full I am looking for this variety, I want to plant in a new place of residence.
Lobo is In the nursery of Zlatoust, Chelyabinsk.
