Apple variety Orlovim

Orlovim is a new late summer apple variety obtained in 1977 at the All-Russian Research Institute for Breeding of Fruit Crops by crossing Antonovka vulgaris with the SR0523 seedling, bred as a result of a complex crossing (summer ripening apple trees). The authors of the variety are domestic breeders Z.M. Serova, E.N. Sedov and V.V. Zhdanov. The main distinguishing feature of Orlovim is a highly resistant, "immune" variety to scab (thanks to the embedded Vm gene). However, it is worth noting that over the years, the high resistance to scab damage in apple trees still weakens.

The variety was accepted for State testing in 1989 in the regions located in the Central zone of Russia, in 1999 it was zoned in the Central region.

The trees are medium-sized (no more than 4 - 5 meters high), grow rather quickly to their final size. The crown has medium thickening, round or broom-shaped. The main branches are located rarely and have a curved shape; when they leave the trunk, they form an almost right angle with it. The bark on the trunk and main branches is light brown in color, with peeling.

Shoots are thin, brown, fleecy, elbow-shaped, in cross-section - rounded. Lentils are small enough and rare. The kidneys are compressed, conical, fleecy. Leaves are medium-sized, wrinkled, light green in color, with a slight yellowish tinge, weak venation, oblong-ovate, with elongated, pointed, helical twisted tips. Leaf plate with a matte surface, convex, curved downwards. The edges of the leaves are wavy, small-town. Petioles are medium in length and thickness, fleecy. Stipules are of medium size, lanceolate. Fruit buds are fleecy, elongated.

The flowers are pale pink, almost white, large, saucer-shaped, closed petals, raised in the form of a "boat". The flower sometimes contains 6 petals. White-pink buds.

Fruits are of medium size (the weight of one apple is 120 - 170 g), one-dimensional, flat-conical, slightly beveled, with slightly pronounced ribbing. The skin is glossy, smooth, subcutaneous points on the surface of the apple are hardly noticeable. During the period of removable maturity, the main color of the fruit is greenish, during the period of consumption it is light yellow. The cover color is expressed on most of the apple with a blurred blush and stripes of bright red color. The peduncle is short, straight, set at an angle. The funnel is of medium depth, sharp-conical in shape, with a slight rustiness. The saucer is small, grooved, with a closed cup. The heart is bulbous, the seed chambers are half-open. The sub-cup tube is rather deep and has a cylindrical shape.

The flesh of apples is of a creamy shade, dense texture, very juicy, prickly. The fruits of the Orlovim apple tree have a pleasant sweet and sour taste and a unique, very strong aroma (vaguely resembles the smell of apples of the variety Antonovka ordinary). The assessment of the appearance of the fruit is 4.3 - 4.4 points, the assessment of taste according to the tasting scale was 4.5 points. In terms of chemical composition, Orlovim apples contain: sugars (10.2%), ascorbic acid (10.2 mg / 100 g), titratable acid (0.72%), pectin substances (13.6%), P-active substances (186 mg / 100 g).

In the middle lane, the period of fruit ripening falls on the end of August. When harvesting and storing it later, avoid hitting the ground or other hard surfaces, as apples may split if dropped. Due to the short storage period (no more than 3 - 4 weeks), fruits are often processed into juices, jams and preserves.

Fruiting in young apple trees is regular and begins 3-4 years after planting. Indicators of early maturity and productivity are high: a 10-year-old tree gives at least 60 - 80 kg of apples, an older apple tree - about 100 kg. The average yield is 200 c / ha. The high winter hardiness of the Orlovim variety was noted: in the harsh winter of 1986 - 1987, when the air temperature dropped to minus 32 ° C, and on the snow surface to minus 35 ° C, no significant damage was noticed on the trees (for comparison: frost damage to apple trees of the variety Melba (Melba) on a 5-point scale it is estimated at 2 points). The resistance of fruits and leaves to scab damage is high.

The main advantages of the Orlovim variety include: immunity to scab, decorativeness and a high appreciation of the taste of apples, high rates of early maturity and yield.

Favorite apple tree in the garden! The apples are sweet, melting in the mouth when ripe, but not friable, very juicy. The apples are medium and large, very beautiful and even. Thanks to breeders for a wonderful late summer variety!
