Apple variety Pobeda (Pobeda Chernenko)

In pursuit of novelties, gardeners often overlook the old, time-tested varieties. For example, an apple tree with the speaking name Pobeda. It was obtained in 1927 by the breeder S.F. Chernenko (in honor of the author, the plant is often called Victory Chernenko). The very famous Antonovka ordinary and London Pepin were taken as the basis for the breeding. The new variety has become widespread in the Central Black Earth region, it shows good results in the Moscow region. Also known in Belarus and Ukraine. Feels great in the southern regions, for example, in the Crimea. The State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation does not appear.

Description

The tree is very tall; in adulthood, the height of an apple tree can reach 5 meters. The plant is powerful, developed, covered with a round or hemispherical crown. The branches that make up the base are thick; they extend from the trunk at a large angle, which ensures their strong attachment. The bark is greenish brown with a grayish bloom. The shoots of the variety are upright, medium-thick, brownish bark, covered with weak pubescence. Lentils are small, rarely located along the shoot.

Pobeda's branching is not strong enough. One growth shoot is formed from the upper buds of annual growths, less often two. From the buds located below, a leaf rosette and one or two shortened branches are formed. 2 - 3 buds located at the base are in a dormant state. On fruit bags, 1 growth shoot and 1 shortened shoot, sometimes 1 shortened shoot and leaf rosette, less often - 2 leaf rosettes develop in the harvest year.

The crown of the apple tree is rare, shining through to the center. Pobeda has few semi-skeletal branches. But skeletal in all parts of the crown densely covered with overgrown branches such as perennial ringlets. The cultivar has a good overgrowth, like Antonovka's. Fruiting occurs on ringlets, a little less often on twigs in the middle and outer parts of the crown, even less often in the inner part.

The leaves are oblong-ovate, dark green in color, of medium size, with a rounded base and a well-defined tip of the apex. The edge is one- or two-serrated, with strong waviness. The leaf blade is slightly curved, slightly twisted, the edges are raised, the complexity along the central vein is significant. The lower part of the leaf is slightly pubescent. The petiole is short, medium-thick, colored, with slight pubescence. Stipules are small and wide. The leaves are attached to the shoot at an angle close to blunt.

Two-year-old apple seedlings are vigorous, well-developed, even in length. The stem of the variety is straight, thick, with mild cranking, with a run to the top. At the base, the diameter is 2 - 2.2 cm, under the crown - 1.5 - 1.7 cm. The bark is dark brown, a bronze tide appears on the sunny side. Lentils are large, convex, rounded, numerous, white.

The fruits of the Victory are quite large - 210-260 grams. The shape of the apples is flat-round, with slight ribbing. The funnel is large, deep and wide. The cup is closed. The skin is thin, but firm, shiny, smooth. There are many subcutaneous points, they are quite large. During the harvesting period, the fruits have a greenish color, but during storage they acquire a beautiful creamy shade.

The pulp of the variety is slightly grainy, very tender and juicy, of a pleasant yellowish tint, it becomes fawn closer to the skin. The taste is excellent, dessert. Light acidity harmonizes perfectly with sweetness. 100 grams of Pobeda pulp contains: 9.6% sugars, 12 mg of ascorbic acid. Assessment of tasters - 4.2 points.

Characteristics

  • The apple tree begins to bear fruit rather late. Initially, this period lasted long 10 years after planting. But after improvements to improve this indicator, the waiting period dropped to 6-7 years;
  • late winter variety. Harvesting maturity occurs in late September - early October. In order for the fruits to acquire the stage of consumer ripeness, they must lie until the end of November or the beginning of December. During this period, fruits gain even greater sweetness and juiciness;
  • annual fruiting, increasing;
  • the yield of this variety is simply amazing. 9 - 10-year-old trees yield up to 100 kg of apples, at the age of 12 - 18 years this figure is 104 - 110 kg, and adult large-sized trees show a record 200 kg harvest. The highest result was 264 kg from one apple tree;
  • winter hardiness of the tree for growing regions is good. No damage has been seen in the last harsh winters. Only partial frostbite was observed at the ends of branches with young growths. For Non-Black Earth Region, winter hardiness is average;

  • immunity is quite strong, including to scab. Only sometimes, in a particularly rainy summer, can there be a manifestation of scab on the fruits;
  • keeping quality is excellent - without loss of presentation and taste, apples can lie until March;
  • the taste of Pobeda is highly dessert, so apples are best consumed in their natural form. But you can also make pie filling, cook jams, add to salads from them.

Pollinators

The apple tree is partially self-fertile, so the harvest will be even without cross-pollination. But the right pollinators will help improve the quality of the fruit. Suitable for this Grushovka Moscow, Lungwort, White filling, Quinty.

Planting and leaving

This variety is best planted in spring, given the growing region. But in the southern regions, autumn planting is quite appropriate. Light, nutritious, moisture-permeable soils are preferred.

Seedlings are watered up to 6 times during the growing season. Mature trees less often - as needed, up to 3-4 times, including pre-winter watering. Of fertilizers in the spring, it is best to use nitrogen-containing compounds, during the period of fruit filling - phosphorus-potassium ones. Mature trees love compost. In the spring, it is necessary to work with the apple tree stem - to clean, whiten, as well as to prune, removing damaged branches or branches thickening the crown.

Even despite the low early maturity, Victory deserves attention from gardeners. First of all, it is appreciated for its fantastic and annual yield, excellent taste, disease resistance and winter hardiness.
