Apple variety Zhigulevskoe

Zhigulevskoe is included in the group of autumn varieties. Depending on the locality, it is sometimes referred to the group of early autumn or, conversely, late autumn varieties. This apple tree was created by domestic breeders at the experimental station of Samara as a result of crossing the old Russian variety Borovinka ordinary with the American variety Wagner Prizovaya at the end of the 40s of the last century. The variety is included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements, and is recommended for cultivation in amateur and industrial gardens.

Characteristics of varietal characteristics... The variety is considered to be high yielding. The fruits of this apple tree are large, some specimens reach a weight of 250 g, the average weight is 120-200 g. The apples are round in shape, sometimes wide ribbed; 50 - 80% dark red at full maturity, slightly juicy, sour-sweet. Assessment of taste on a five-point system 3.8 points. The skin of the fruit is firm, shiny, oily. Seed chambers are closed, bulbous nest, compact. The pulp is tender, creamy. Selective harvesting, 3-4 times a season, as the ripening period is extended. Zhigulevskoe does not set fruit well in the absence of pollinating bees. The apple harvesting period begins on September 5 and lasts until the end of the month; in the southern regions, the harvest begins in August. The consumption time is 1 - 2 months.

From the parent variety (Wagner Prize), the apple tree inherited a weak winter hardiness - it is considered average or below average. According to various sources, scab resistance is also different - weak or medium. In the northern districts of the Moscow region, the bole, which is the most vulnerable spot, may freeze, while the young growth persists. Freezing of the trunk provokes the exposure of the lower part of the trunk first, and then of the large lower branches, which ultimately leads to the complete death of the tree. Therefore, it is advisable to plant this variety on a winter-hardy stock (the varieties Brusnichnoye, Anise striped are suitable) at a height of about two meters from the ground. An autumn whitewashing of the trunk is also recommended. When grown on a stem former or skeleton former, Zhigulevskoe tolerates lower winter temperatures.

Features of crown formation... The tree is large. The crown shape is usually highly round. The crown is open, not prone to thickening, well illuminated by the sun. In practice, pruning is used only for the purpose of limiting growth. The variety belongs to the group of vigorous ones, so the stock must be selected so that it inhibits growth and does not allow the tree to fatten (Lingonberry is ideal). Skeletal branches are raised, straight. The leaves are bright green, ovoid, serrated along the edge. The buds wake up early and are sometimes damaged by spring frost. Fruiting is concentrated on ringlets and fruit twigs. At a young age, the Zhigulevskoye apple trees bear fruit annually.

Growing areas... Due to its low winter hardiness, this variety is widespread mainly in the southern and central regions of Russia, and is popular in the south of the Ryazan region. Cultivated within the North Caucasian, Lower Volga and Middle Volga regions. In stanza form, it can be grown in regions of Siberia, up to the East Siberian region.

Krasnoyarsk. Frozen out in winter 2009 - 2010 according to the level of snow. Recovered in the form of a huge bush. Apples are beautiful, large, without scab. Sweetish-bland, but lingering - we eat them last.

In your climate, it is best to plant your apple trees horizontally. The apple tree is placed in the furrow and covered with earth. The top and branches (if any) are bent upward. A shrubby rooted apple tree grows, which is not afraid of any frosts, because in a couple of years it is restored and all the growth from the soil is varietal.

Strange taste rating in the article - 3.8 points. In my opinion, the Zhigulevskoe apple tastes all 5 points. The pulp is juicy and very tender, sweet and sour. One of the most delicious apples. And how beautiful it looks. True, not very easy to use.

In my opinion, the taste of Zhigulevsky is greatly underestimated here. In my grandmother's garden on very good black soil, the apple tree gave a very large harvest of very tasty apples. Fully ripe, they were amazingly tasty. I valued them much more than Melba in particular.

Can you please tell me how tall the tree of this variety is and how much it grows? The nursery said it was a dwarf tree.

Tall tree. We have grown to 5.5 m. Even the tendency to lower the height. The crown diameter is 5-6 meters. It never froze, unlike other apple trees (south of the Moscow region). Age about 25 years. I can’t say more precisely - it was not me who planted it. Fruiting in a year. Apparently on a seed stock. Apples are not large 100-140g. Harvest 100-150 kg. Delicious, delicious. I would give 4 for the taste 4. Harvesting - mid-September. Ripen unevenly. I disagree with the taste assessment. Immediately after collection, you cannot eat - no taste, very hard, should lie down for 3 weeks. After maturation, the taste improves, sweet with sourness, juicy, very tasty. They are stored until April at t = 4, I think that at 0 + 1 they would last until May. Apples are severely damaged by the moth if not processed. The variety is very worthy. There are many inaccuracies in the description. We dry, drive the juice, eat it fresh until March-April, distribute it to relatives and neighbors. And everyone praises the taste.
